I read up on this thoroughly re. the gen II and II.5 and many guys did it--both with factory 38 gallon and also aftermarket-sourced tanks. Looked very doable, there was a bit of tweaking involved but not too bad. The biggest issue is reuse of fuel pump, gauge, lines, hangers, etc. Hopefully Toyota kept it simple with this model.

Right now even pricing '22 parts is a pita given the newness of it all.
After perusing '22 inventories on Autotrader, there are a helluva lot of these trucks being produced and sold with the SR5 and 22.5g, more than people probably suspect.

As such getting a 32 tank in the future could be challenging. Recommend that if you may do this swap down the road keep an eye out for a battered '22 properly equipped--now.

Got another question if anyone knows. By my understanding the sr does not have different drive modes. Is this something that can be added down the road if I wanted to?

For the record, I'd love to see the 32 Gallon tank available for the SR, maybe as kind of an enhanced towing package with the hitch and wiring. Looking at the SR5 option list, the upcharge for the big tank is about $1k (convenience package for the Crewmax 6.5, which comes with the 32, v. The conv package for the CM 5.5). However, the milage estimate for the Tundra is about the same as the Tacoma and the 22.5 tank is about 1.5 gallons bigger than the Taco. I get 400 miles out my Tacoma on a tank, so unless you do a lot of long distance driving or live a long way from a gas station. The 22.5 tank might not be that hard to live with.

Yep, that's the thinking that brought me to this SR buy.
My wife has a Lexus RX350 with the 3.5 and all wheel drive. It has a 19.6 gallon tank and with her consistent 21-22 mpg she gets 400 miles to a tank. Not too bad at all. Hoping for the same scenario with the SR.
Doubtful, would probably entail a completely different harness. But maybe the plugs are there.

There are not too many pictures of SRs out there so I have been collecting them as I see them. Here is a DC that is/was for sale.

Is the plastic thing on top of the tailgate color matched in the other trims or missing? I haven't seen one in person and I can't tell.

Thanks for those! 2WD? Any chance you'd know the payload?

Thanks for posting, great pics. That's exactly what I'm awaiting but add the spray-in liner and 4WD.
Curious if the SR has the same center console 4WD actuator button as the SR5? Suspect that Toyota may have put a more plain setup on the dash.

Looking at the SR video posted by london toyota it looks like selector is in the same place on the console. Here is a screenshot.

Very true. Most of my driving (90%+) is spent on interstate 65 and then a state highway so I would likely see mpg towards the top end of the epa rating. The larger tank would just come in handy for longer trips with the family, honestly.

Quick comments about the de-tuned engine…

Ford does the same thing in its lineup, except they use a completely different engine instead of the same one with different software tunes (I’m making an assumption that the SR engine itself is identical to the SR5 and above). The 2.7 ecoboost power output is nearly identical to the SR power output.

    2.7 ecoboost - 325hp / 400lb ft
    SR 3.5 twin turbo - 348hp / 405lb ft

Don’t know the exact sales numbers but I’m pretty sure the 2.7 ecoboost sells really well in the f150…more than the 5.0 v8 and probably as well as the 3.5 ecoboost or better.

My guess, without having driven a new tundra in any configuration, is that the SR engine variant is quite enjoyable to drive simply given how popular the 2.7 ecoboost is and especially when you factor in how quickly you hit peak power with the tundra engine.

In some ways I wish Toyota would have taken a page out of Ford’s playbook and offered both engine variants, as well as the hybrid powertrain in all trim levels (Ford’s powerboost hybrid is available in their lowest trim level).

    TL;DR
Fuel tank size probably won’t be an issue for most people, including me. A few more options for powertrains and add on packages throughout all trim levels would be nice.

The 2.7L is a ridiculously good engine. By all accounts its the perfect half ton motor. Its very reliable, it gets very good mpg, and if you exceed its capabilities you should probably be looking at a 3/4 ton or more.

The detuned 3.5 in the SR is really, really weird to me. If its physically identical to the higher trim engine, then it wont get better mpg. For a given engine load, how would toyota tune it more efficiently if everything else is the same? I would assume if both engines are physically the same then the fuel they require to create a certain power is the same. Why would Toyota want the higher spec motor to get worse mileage.

That’s a great question that I don’t have an answer for to be honest.

Here’s a stupid question(s) that someone smarter can probably answer…you can buy aftermarket tuners for trucks, correct? Some of those products have different pre-set tunes whether it’s for more power, achieving better mpg, or giving you a little of both, correct? If those aftermarket tuners actually yield results then how do they actually work? Wouldn’t that be our answer as to how Toyota is “de-tuning” an engine to achieve slightly better mpg.

To your point though, there could very well be a mechanical or physical design difference between the SR engine and the one used in higher trims. Meaning, it’s not just a difference in programming like we are all assuming.

Does seem silly to me, too. It's almost like the detuned motor's default would be similar to how the higher trim motor might behave in Eco mode to cap the power and maybe alter the boost curve.

So, I'm checking the major on-line tire sellers for snow tires and find that they carry no tires of *any* kind in the SR OEM size (245/75R18)...

I haven't bought yet, but I'm considering a 2022 SR. Reason for searching is that I usually mount snow tires on dedicated rims.

Yup... even get a different size wheel and different aspect ratio tires that work out to ~ the same diameter and width as the OEM. Lots of options that way, especially for snow tires/wheels where wheel appearance may not be very important.

Sorry, have to ask, what's your payload on that truck? Feel free to post a picture of the door jam sticker. Much appreciated!

Nice looking truck. Is this yours? If so, would love a report on how it drives and handles especially with the de-tuned engine.
