I have owned a Tacoma since 2008 and want to purchase a new Tundra to haul a Track car on a new trailer I just bought. I want to order a Tundra with my specifications from one of my local dealers and found a dealer that says they will do this for a minimal mark up. However, a number of the dealers I have spoken to say that Toyota is not taking build to suit orders. Other dealers have said that they can change the specs on an upcoming allocation order that is coming in from Toyota but that Toyota may not respect the changes and still send something different. I do not want to wait 3 or 4 months for a new build and get something I did not order. Has anyone ordered a truck to your specs and what has been your experience?

To answer your question the description of your conversation is historically the Toyota way, especially with these new Tundras. You may have better luck with a different dealer given that each have different allocations but there's going to likely be some level of compromise on your part depending on your model and color expectations.

I am like you in wanting exactly what I want and order it straight from the manufacturer. Unfortunately, that's a slim chance at least for several months. Which for me, I can't even build it exactly even from the Toyota website.

The Tundra build site is terrible but I was finally able to come up with an acceptable build even though I had to make some concessions and compromises. IMHO the site is a s#%t show. I did put in a build order with a local Toyota dealer that says they are not asking an adjustment premium but added some bogus fees none the less. The dealer is saying they will send the order to Toyota and that Toyota will accept or deny the order and that I should know what Toyota says in the next week or 2. Let’s see what happens…..
