So, getting the truck registered has been a saga. I’ve made 2 trips to Poughkeepsie DMV and two trips to Millbrook. Millbrook finally got it done. Still couldn’t get RealID on my license but that’s another saga.

Went for state inspection at the Monro service place in Hyde Park this morning. They wouldn’t look at the truck because of the tint on the front windows. It’s not dark. Slightly lighter than the factory tint on the back. Looked up the state law on tint which says 30% is legal. Pretty sure I’m within that limit.

Can anyone give me some info? See lots of folks with tinted front windows.

@Jim LE 1301, could a local PD measure it with a light meter and give him something for the DMV? Just an idea.....

Unfortunately unless you know a mechanic who will pass the inspection with the current tint every year, it’s almost impossible to get around it. I’m in New York and have given up and just removed the front tint all together.

NYS passed a law about 5 years ago......no tint whatsoever unless it is factory stock on the back windows. The front 2 windows and windshield cannot have any tint.
The only way to get around it is to have a doctor fill out a NYS DMV form MV-80W

Yup you're SOL. Unless (@Jim LE 1301 Earmuffs) you can find "a guy" that will pass it. I used to take mine off for inspection, then have it replaced afterwards. That got old after about 2 rounds. I just gave up.

called a few places. appreciate the input. peeling and redoing every year would suck. currently in the garage trying to find where i packed my heat gun for the move.

peeling it off tomorrow then making another inspection appointment. hopefully the place in town will have their machine working again. not that heading back down to hyde park is far but we've adjusted pretty quick to being here and 15 miles down the road feels like forever...

hopefully nothing else on the truck causes it to fail. smog check, brake check, tire check, wiper check. shouldn't be an issue. :fingerscrossed:

Sean there is a place about 20 minutes south of you that will take the tint off and then put new tint on after the inspection for $100. From what I hear.

Did you try going over to Kingston and look for a small guy, non chain repair shop? They may pass you. Your side of the river was hit hard last year by NYS inspectors busting shops for passing cars, they were hit with big fines so everyone is scared to lose the inspection license.

Not that this helps with the hemorrhaging right now, but I've heard of people buying a second set of glass and swapping them out. Believe it was cheap and doesn't take very much time after you have done it once or twice.

NY tint is actually 70% on the front windows based on how tint percentages are displayed/advertised. NY says cannot block more than 30% of light but if you have 30% tint, you are blocking 70% light.

Not for the next 3-4 months you won’t. You’ll want every way imaginable to enjoy the 6 hours of daily sunlight we get this time of year.

NYS law states that the front driver and passenger side windows must transmit 70% of light. When a car comes off the assembly line the window glass already has some tinting in the glass mixture. If you put a tint meter on a bare window it usually reads 71-74% light transmittance. If you add any tint at all the light transmittance will drop below the 70% threshold. NYS VTL section 375-12(a)(b)2.

I know of two places in Kingston to get inspection done. One is Prestige, the Toyota dealer. The other is the Hoffman car wash. I'm sure there are others. You might have a better chance of having your tint overlooked at the car wash.
