If I understand correctly you believe the this affects every single new Tundra owner, correct? Has this been determined?

Yeah, it's pretty shitty that dealer gave him a rav4 loaner
when my Tacoma was in the shop they gave me a Camry.
I think Toyota should at least match the loaner to the same category of vehicle, if none available, just reimburse the guy and let him rent an F-150 for the duration of the warranty work

Don't know if it's a dealer by dealer thing but when mine was in for warranty work no loaner is offered. I had to fight for one since I am use my truck for work and they eventually had me go to the Enterprise next door and rent a ram on there dime.

Agreed! If the reliability drops off, then Toyota becomes an As Run just like the other Big 3. I typically keep my vehicles for 10-15 years; sill own my ‘07 Tundra I bought new. It only has 150k miles and if it was 4WD, I’d seriously consider keeping it until I saw the reliability/longevity of this new design. Heck, I’ve been waiting for a refresh for 10 years, I guess I can wait a few more.

You sound like me. I am still DD'ing my 2009 Tacoma Sport 4x4 purchased new in Nov 2008. Also like you I have been waiting for a Tundra refresh and a REAL Tacoma refresh for a long time. But mine at 120,000 miles still drives like new, and I have updated the infotainment electronics, added seat heaters, etc. so it is still really nice. I can wait a while for Tundra to sort out... which I don't believe will take very long... and maybe even wait for the next Tacoma. But it will need a much better powertrain than the 3rd gens for me to even consider it.

While I agree that I didn’t think about the ‘07 Tundra being a million+ mile vehicle when I purchased it new, I absolutely bought it because of Toyota’s known reliability. It was my 8th Toyota and had reliability diminished in any way, I would have been very disappointed. But, I do agree that it was a game changer at the time, but not sure the new one is just yet. Need to drive one to see. Maybe the hybrid will truly surprise us with power and MPGs, but most of what I’ve read leads me to believe we’ll mainly get the power with a little improvement in MPGs. We’ll soon find out.

You seem to relish repeatedly reminding us all of the issues with the turbos, but so far this doesn’t seem to be widespread, so you’re speculating that this problem will happen to everyone. More likely, this is isolated to a specific batch of parts and Toyota will figure it out and get it corrected.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
    I hope you’re right.

We do know Toyota isn’t handling this very well.

I hope it gets a robust turbo 4 with the 10-speed trans and not just an update to the current lame setup. Tacoma has always managed to sell plenty based on rep but that isn't gonna be enough anymore what with the 3rd gens. They lost at least one customer in me with that... but then I didn't really NEED a new truck then. I wanted one to get some of the more modern tech, but I was unwilling to accept the powertrain compromises. I probably would have accepted them if I had needed a vehicle then, however, before buying another Chevy or whatever.

Oh I’ll bet Toyota and their turbo supplier have been having a very uncomfortable come to Jesus meeting the past week or two. One would think they’ll sort it out.

Just wish Toyota would prioritize getting good turbos to customers with broken Tundras instead of building a few extra new ones.

Sounds like the dealers aren’t talking to right people in corporate. I don’t have a lot of confidence in dealership parts departments.

This one’s hard for me to believe, and truth be told, I actually believe my salesperson, but he checked once more with his service manager and was told that there is no “bulletin” sent to the dealers from Toyota regarding the waste gate issue.
This is a large dealer as well in Naples, FL.

Two Corporate entities we are dealing with. Toyota North America with the parent company in Japan. Lot's of legalize here with this statement. Technically, we purchase the vehicle from Toyota N/A so this is who we deal with on warranty claims. Most likely majority of design and tech work completed in Japan. Just my thoughts on this.

Been watching this issue from afar as I am interested in a 2022 Platinum. One thing that I find interesting/disconcerting about this is that Tim at Pickup Truck Plus had a relatively benign lock issue and was on the phone with Toyota US HQ who then sent a few engineers to Nebraska to check this out (and I suppose I recognize this is because he has visibility / audience). Meanwhile, there are more than a few with the waste gate issue seemingly on their own paying for a truck they can’t drive, maybe have a loaner or not, and parts that might be coming. I hope CD - and others - are right that this is isolated and/or Toyota is working to make this right.

There are a bunch of US guys working on this too though. I read Sweers took a bunch of engineers with him to work in Japan during the early development of this truck. I guess I want to know why the dealer aren’t pushing to pull parts from the turbo factory.

Did they replace any parts on his truck though? Whatever the issue was could have been some tolerance issue that can be measured and corrected fairly quickly. I feel that diagnosing a turbo issue is more difficult.

To me, it was less the diagnosis (they will no doubt figure out the turbo issue) but more the extent/appearance of a fulsome and immediate response. I am inclined to believe they are working hard behind the scene, but judging by what some others on this forum and FB are saying, Toyota is having a hard time even publicly acknowledging this as an issue. As a prospective buyer, I’d certainly appreciate a “hey, we understand this is happening and we are examining the extent of the issue and potentially impacted purchasers” over silence.

Don’t forget the 5.7 had a small number of camshaft related issues when it first came out. Things were handled the same as today. Just with less social media in 2007

Check out the 22+ Tundra FB page. Just a handful of posts on this 2 weeks back. Different story now. Multiple New posts since then mention the following:
    1. New trucks CEL light came on and it’s been at the dealership for days waiting for a diagnosis.
    2. New trucks with CEL coming on and owner asking about how to clear it because it has to be a mistake.
    3. Others who’s promised delivery date on their new truck has long passed and dealer is telling them it’s still in Texas on a “QC Hold” and asking what that means.
    4. Claims that factory has gone to half shifts, but also reading this could be COVID related.

engineers have flown out to look at the waste gate issue too. It’s just more complicated a fix. Seems to me the numbers must be around a hundred at least trucks with issues but with verity of check engine light issues I’m not so sure it’s mechanical. Time will tell. If it was more wide spread I think we would have heard more from Toyota.
