Really nice truck and excellent work! I need to paint my roof too. I will do it the way you did. One thing to check, if you haven’t already, is the timing belt condition. 190k is close to the second change interval if the first was done on schedule. You can pull one of the upper covers and see if it is cracked. If it breaks, it’s over for your engine.

Thanks! My roof has held up well so far and it looks better than bedliner in my opinion. If you keep it waxed it should last even longer. Thank you for the heads up on the timing belt. After doing some research, the 4.0 v6 that I have has a chain instead of belt so I will be alright for a while.

I got the tires and wheels mounted the other day. I went with the odd size of 245/75/17 which translates to 31.5". The old tires were 255/75/16 so I gained 1.5" of tire. Gunmetal 4runner TRD Pro wheels wrapped with Goodyear All Terrain Adventure with kevlar. So far the ride is better the old and crappy highway terrains that were installed. Handling and noise is good for an AT tire. I saw minimal if any performance drops. I am pleased especially considering I got them for $138 a tire (without a special) from Discount Tire.

Trucks looks great, man! And what a cool story. Love seeing clean, high-mileage, well-kept first gens. That truck has at least another 190k left in it.

I did valve cover gaskets last weekend. I had just a tiny leak on each one. I was impressed with how good it looks inside. What do you guys think? Pretty good for 193,000?

I also got a job at a motor sport shop called HD Motorsports a few months ago. I have learned how to mount and balance tires and some other stuff. I do a lot of sweeping and trash emptying but I love it.

Sounds like you have an outstanding work ethic. Keep it up and you'll go far. A good work ethic in young people is a rare thing these days.

I did a drain and fill on the truck last weekend. I got 4 qts out and put 4 qts back in. I used Toyota WS to refill it. As far as I know it has never been changed and it has 194,000 on it now. It shifts as smoove as ever.

I also scored a console from a double cab and the swap is in progress. Stay tuned for how it turns out.

Good job Andrew. Your grandpa obviously changed the oil regularly. Keep posting and if you have any questions ask the group. Your mechanical knowledge and tinkering will pay dividends in life no matter what field you go into. Best wishes

Here is the pictures of the double cab console swap. I wired up a usb port to charge the phone while I was in there. Fitment is not perfect I like 10 times better than the old one.

Hey @shifty` I swapped out my 2885 coils for 2884 coils a couple weeks ago. The ride is much better and I lowered about half an inch up front. If you have the v6, I would recommend 2884 if you have 1 inch in the rear but 2883 if your rear is stock. I am coming up on 195k and almost ready for an oil change and another trans drain/fill. Thanks for checking in!

All good info, thanks for sharing, there's an open inquiry from a V6 guy right now, he'll probably be helped in reading this.

What've you got next on the project list for the truck, regear/LSD or the bed cover?

HMU before you do the bed cover. I'm on my 2nd now, can provide some feedback.

I have decided no on the bed cover for now. I am working on designing a bed rack right now. Something similar to a KB Voodoo rack is what I am going for. Once I find the steel I will start putting it together and see what I come up with. My v6 comes with a 3.71 if I remember correctly so I would like to find a stock 3.9 or 4.10 in a junkyard and swap that in at some point. I also want some greasable leaf shackles. I have been eyeing the ARB kit form 1stgenoffroad for $200. Do you think that would be worth it or no?

Changed the oil and did another drain/fill of the transmission this weekend. I only had 3500 miles on the oil but it had been exactly a year so it was due for a change. Rolled over 195k a couple weeks ago. 200,000 here we come!

I flushed the power steering in between rain storms this morning. I didn't have record of it being done before but it was not very dirty. I used Valvoline synthetic ATF.

Nice job young man! A couple of things I think you might consider if not done already, thermostat, u joints, fuel pump, maybe a water pump, belts and hoses, and a good coolant flush and fill. You can rest assured, that 4.0 is solid and will last you a while!

Wired up some backup lights a couple weekends ago. Pretty happy with the results. More light than I really need back there. Now I need to swap some leds into the taillight to match the auxilary. I ran it to a switch because I don't need them on every time I go into reverse and I can turn them on without the reverse lights if I need light in the back. I got the switch form keepitcleanwiring and put it in one of the blanks to the left of my steering wheel.

Very functional for sure, however you lost some structural integrity of the bumper at the same time. Not that they have a bunch to begin with.....

@2mchfun - I don’t see why he’d want to replace the water pump or fuel pump prophylactically. Water pumps will slowly leak when they fail and I’ve never had a fuel pump fail except where someone introduced foreign substance into my tank

Personally, I like to replace parts before they fail. Getting stranded sucks. Yeah, it might cost me a little more, but so does getting stranded in the middle of nowhere or in bad areas where it could be flat out dangerous to be.
