I'm not exactly sure which forum this would belong under, hopefully it helps someone. I've searched the internet high and low and it seems like everyone has had issues programming new key fobs with the newer versions of Techstream. I played around with what I have and found what I was looking for buried in the program (Version 12.20.024).

I'm going off memory, but it wasn't too difficult and I'm sure I could find it again, no need to roll back the version (unless there are other issues I'm not aware of):

Put in your vehicle model and year (Tundra, duh)
Once you get to the menu, select Main Body
Click on the Utility button on the left hand side
Select the Wireless Registration option in the menu

Apaprently, Wireless is what they use in Techstream in regards to the keyless entry, so this is where you can program a new key fob. The program has instructions that walks you through the process, and even tells you what you need to do in the screen prior to clicking next.

Here's what I had to do (Techstream tells you the below step by step):

-Ensure that the ignition is turned to on (not started) for at least 30 seconds prior to starting this
-Ensure the driver's door is unlocked and opened (all other doors closed)
-Click through the screens on Techstream to where it starts a 30-second countdown, and now
-Click the lock/unlock buttons for 1 second and release
-Click either lock OR unlock for 1 second
-Techstream should recognize that you completed this sequence

Your new key fob is programmed!

Hopefully this helps someone...everything I found about this version online literally said they removed the functionality, which seemed rather silly, so digging around in the program solved the issue. Next step is when my new key arrives and I can get that cut and programmed, then I'll have a backup to use, so if I ever lose the one I have, I won't be stuck!

@bfunke So the 2 Diagnostic Cable Mini VCI J2534 OBD Scanner cables that are linked above are similar but for the version of firmware (and likely some minor hardware) that runs on them. The 2.0.4 version that @boosterdtrdpro has is the latest version and works with the latest Toyo/Lex Cars. If you plan to do techstream with the latest version and have newer Toyo models I would get that.

I use the older version of the cable (1.4.0 i think) that I can do most things like program the keys, change customized functions and such. But I do not have a 2010+ Toyota so it works for me. Decide on what you want to do and buy appropriately.

How/where do you tell which is the "newer" and "older" version of these cables? Are there hardware differences or just the firmware for the cable?

My RW is a 2011, and as far as I can tell, the cable/software does everything I need it to do. Are you thinking it might not work on newer versions of the software and/or newer vehicles?

Yes as I mentioned you have to look for the cable firmware version. The old one is 1.4.X the newer ver is 2.0.4. Dont go with the software version.

Ah, found it! For some reason I skipped the actual description on Amazon where it had the technical info. My main concern was if it would be plug-and-play with the computer and Techstream version I already had, and it 100% was.

Is there a resource somewhere (I know it's not exactly fully legit software we're talking here) that would tell you what the differences in all the software and firmware options would be? I'm guessing with my truck being a 2011, there wouldn't really be much in the way of added functionality in the older cable/TS vs. getting a newer setup for both? Although I could be completely wrong...maybe the mythical "increase mpg" option is buried in the new software somewhere and you can only access it with a newer cable :D

I think all the 2011 functions can be used via the old and new cables. But if you are getting one then get the new one.. and be done with it. BTW there are drivers to this that you have to get as well.. just search the internet for those. Its sometimes finicky if you dont have the drivers to your correct OS.

ALSO make sure you run virus scanner on that software..

I have an Amazon cable but am running the virtual PC with techstream as found in the ih8mud directions.

Didnt want to troubleshoot my pc to run the software directly off those mini cds.

I bought a $25 version of the Techstream software from eBay. But then I started reading lots of horror stories in Amazon reviews on the mini VCI cables about viruses and laptops being ruined and needing an IT degree to get it up and running. So I chickened out. I guess I'm out $25 bucks but that's better than taking a chance on ruining a $900 laptop. Sigh....

Typically I've seen the software come with the cable itself. I've also read all the posts in various places about the software kicking off anti-virus warning, but I think they're mostly false or due to something in the TechStream software itself that the AV software picks up in error as a potential virus. I could be wrong, but I don't recall ever reading about the included software actually having a virus in it...

FWIW - get yourself an old/cheap laptop and run it...the one I use I bought from a buddy for $80. No need for a nice laptop :D

I've seen several people have issues. I got a super-cheap $75 laptop from a friend with an older Windows OS and the $40 cable from Amazon and have had great results with it so far. It's much nicer to be able to just go out to the truck and do these things on my own as needed. There's several good options listed above...and older laptops are a dime a dozen nowadays, you don't need anything fancy.

If you getting issues it's because the laptops were not setup correctly or something similar. Any laptop should be able run Techstream now. As long as you can follow instructions you can get it working. Most that run now run on virtual machines. Its not hard but just follow the instructions give on the first page to get up and running.
