My truck does not have the towing package from what I can tell. It does have a tow hitch installed, and I assume it's aftermarket. I don't see any trailer light connections under it. From some reading on here it seems like some of the early ones were not equipped at all. My question is- is there a preference on kit for this? Do they have one that is plug and play, or do I have to splice into some factory harness? I would be happy with a 4 flat plug in right now. But I also have a trailer brake controller and if it was not too much trouble would like to go 7 pin and put it to use.

I had a 7 pin setup installed at an RV shop that a friend worked at. There is a plug and play adapter for the 4 flat. Have to have it since the wiring is funky back there. Think I have the CURT one.

Awesome! Curt makes good stuff. Looks like I can use that one for now, and always run a couple of wires from the cab later on to do a 7 pin and trailer brakes.

For upgrading to 7 later on, you could employ this kit:

I'm very slowly working through plans for a custom 7 pin tow harness as close to OEM as possible. I'll try to remember to tag you if I get it all done.

I ordered the curt kit you first suggested, as well as a 4 to 7 and 4 with mounting kit. Figure I can run the two trailer brake wires later when I get to it and not have to undo anything. I am a little concerned the curt kit might not work, as my truck doesn't have the factory tow packaged. They denote that on that on website. We will see soon enough.

Per my sticker I also do not have the tow package. But I did have the grey connectors.

My 2000 came with 4 pin on a bracket under bumper left of hitch. It has a harness to the grey connectors
