If I had to get a 3/4 ton for towing purposes, probably the GMC Sierra 2500. The Chevy mug is hideous, The Dodge doesn't give me the feels in the reliability area based on experience. The F250 seems a solid choice as well, just less impressed with the Fords HD lineup. Honestly not impressed with any of them. GMC is the lesser of evils for me.

I used to have a 2019 F250 XL as a work truck. I hated how the small stock tires would death wobble anytime you hit a bump. I worked in O&G, so there was a lot of bumps. The Chevy looks God awful. I usually don't get something based off of cosmetics, but that thing is hideous. I haven't had any experience with Duramax or Cummins, I know its almost like talking politics nowadays, but I'd love honest comparisons between the two.

The guys saying GM have obviously never owned a GM truck. Those have been engineering nightmares and pure garbage since the GMT400 platform rolled out in 1988.

And yes, I've had the misfortune of sitting on the side of the road three times in a GM truck. And my father's low mileage Duramax has been in the shop for a month with head failure. And our Duramax trucks in our work fleet have stranded our guys numerous times over the years. So I'm not just making a random blanket statement. GM makes trash. There's a reason that even Ram is outselling Chevy these days.

If I was going to get a 3/4 ton GAS truck I'd go with the F-250 7.3L. Stone age simple, powerful, decent MPG.

If I was going to get a 3/4 ton DIESEL truck I'd go Ram 2500 Cummins. Rear coil suspension, better interior features, better infotainment, legendary diesel engine that lasts forever, and quite frankly they just look the best too.

I’d go with a GMC personally if going to an HD, but definitely not for a 1/2 ton as I think their quality has gone way down. My father has an 02 duramax he bought from new that has been nothing but great, and other people I know personally have had good luck with them. My brothers 2018 2500HD 6.0 gas has also been a good truck, no trips back to the dealer for anything. If I needed a 2500 I would not opt for any diesels personally given their cost to repair and maintain, and the emissions crap slowly kills them. Short trips are also worse for them than a gas engine. If I had to buy new I’d get a GM 6.6 Gasser, and if buying used the slightly older 6.0 Gasser is a great engine although less powerful than even the tundra 5.7. I also just can’t stand Ford as a company, they’re great at marketing but are rather disingenuous in how they market their MPG, towing and hauling numbers etc. TFL truck commented on how with Ford trucks they never get the advertised MPG. Dodges were never good trucks in the past (Cummins diesel aside) but can’t say how the new ones are.

I’ve owned several generations of GM 1/2 ton trucks. 95, 98, 03. Haven’t had a GM HD. I’ve owned some Dodge garbage and would only do so If it was under warranty, then I’d be pissed everytime I had to take it in for warranty work. I wouldn’t buy a 3/4 ton gas truck. Would be diesel for sure. Cummins is a fine engine, well pre DEF. Dodge has the best infotainment. Uconnect is great. Transmission issues are not. Never owned a Ford, but don’t like the seating position. Don’t like the dumb things Ford seems to get wrong. Like Power windows. And valvetrains. They all have their strange issues. I purposefully bought a trailer small enough I could tow it with a Tundra. Cause I didn’t want to mess with the Big 3 HD’s.

I know several people with GM HD’s, have been trouble free. Not so with Ram and Ford, they have more problems than their worth.
Went with my friend in his work Chevy Duramax, amazing power train!

I had a 2008 Silverado with the Duramax engine before getting this Tundra. I miss that truck every day. The fuel gelled up one day in January and I got pissed off and went out and got this Tundra. I love the Tundra but I miss having a diesel.

I'd go for a GM or Chevy 3500 with the 6.6 gas engine. For about $2k more than a 2500, you get a ton more capability.

Pick your poison. I will preface with this:

If you plan on daily driving/short trips you should plan on additional issues/maintenance regardless of manufacture.

    Cons:
2011-16 had the CP4 injection pump. Do some research on that. I’m doing a CP3 conversion soon. Kit is in my garage. (Almost done)

Hot side charge pipe can blow off after either time or adding fuel. Easy and cheap fix before it happens. (Done)

CAI is a good idea. The factory box sucks. That’s a fact on most factory systems anyway. (Done)

    Pro’s:

-Besides having the DEF tank heater recall and a bad wheel speed sensor, the LML has served me well. Almost 73k miles of some pretty tough towing.

-Same engine output in 3/4 and 1 ton.

-exhaust brake works excellent. I’m at 80% on my brakes at 72800 miles.
    -trucks pull very well.

-Newer GM trucks have a new Denso injection system that has proven to be pretty darn good.

    Ford

    cons:

-They also run the CP4 since 2011 into the current model. Same issues.
-some of my friends have had issues with replacing the front end rather early due to death wobble.
-another friend was DD his 2015 F350 and burnt all the valves on the driver side due to always being in DPF cleaning cycle. Had to pull the engine apart at 15k miles. This was his fault due to taking short trips and never finishing the regen cycle.
-another buddy has had dash gauge cluster issues. Something to do with the parking brake or whatever. Weird one.

    Pro’s:

    Pull really well.
2015 model year got the selectable exhaust brake like GM and Ram.
-For the most part, the 6.7 PSD is a great truck. I have friend with 180k+ miles and haven’t done much but work them.

-Same engine output for 3/4 and 1 ton.

    Ram

Most people know I had a lot of issues with my 2002 and 2005 dodge trucks. I also used to work in a Cummins repair shop. Trust me, these are not bulletproof. Tough, yes. Don’t drink the cool-aid.

    cons:

-still have front end issues due to how heavy the motor is.

-2019-2020 had the CP4. Ram wised up and went back to the CP3. Ram learns fast now.

    - 3/4 tons get the lower output and Ram transmission. To get the HO motor and Aisan trans, have to go 3500. Weird.

    pro’s-

    Trucks have longest service intervals.

    pulls extremely well.

Interiors are very nice. Probably best in the biz now.

Personally, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. Use them for what they were designed for and you will have a trouble free workhorse for a long time.

"Use them for what they were designed for and you'll have a trouble free work horse for a long time" Nailed it! I believe a lot of the "issues" are from peeps who buy these beasts and use them for quick 'hops' locally and very little else. Then there are those who are just too smart to EVER read the Owner's Manual!:D

Pretty much. Hell I had issues DD my early pre-DEF diesels. Injectors, injection pumps…you name it.

Working in the diesel repair shop was an eye opener. If you have 5-15k dollars to drop on repairs, by all means get a diesel (or keep it until warranty expires and dump). I had a few 7500.00 repairs and I did the work myself.
Look at what it costs. I’ll use my 2016 GMC LML Duramax for an example.

-Injectors & install plus 6 hours
    -Injection pump and 16 hours
    -head gasket(s) 16 hours
    -EGR replacement 6 hours
    -DPF/exhaust replacement.

    If money is no object.

Ram 2500 cummins megacab in red with sport appearance package, with 12" display (one thing I miss from my Ram), then do Allison swap, delete, call up CJC offroad and slap 37s on it.

Or, a red AEV prospector XL with delete and titan tank.

Ford. Gm quality is trash and the 3/4 ton Cummins isn’t the HO and doesn’t have the aisin. I’d buy a 7.3 ford gas and skip the diesel kool aid.

I traded my Tundra in on a Ram 2500 Megacab about a month ago. Truck had 6500 miles on it when i purchased. Just got back from a 4000 mile trip in the new truck, it has performed very well and has been awesome so far. It seems to be a well built truck so far. Almost bought a GMC 2500 gas but drove the Ram and really liked it. First diesel, don’t know that ill keep it beyond the 100K power train warranty but so far so good. The interior is flat out amazing on these Rams. Wife drives a Lexus GX and I would absolutely own another Tundra if all i needed was a 1/2 ton.

I'll be going HO 3500 RAM SRW within a year or two. Is local inventory has been ramping up so hopefully deals will turn around soon.

While you certainly wont mistake it for a diesel, the 6.6 gasser is no slouch either.

I traded my '18 SR5 in last summer for this '21 GMC 3500 SRW. With few options except the ones that really count (it's basically a base level work truck), it stickered for $52k but I was able to get it for $46k thanks to GM's family discount. They also gave me $38k for the Tundra on the trade in.

It broke my heart to give up the Tundra but in the end mission dictates equipment and I needed a 6 seat HD, not a 5 seat 1/2 ton.

The Tundra was built better, no doubt, but GM did a pretty good job on this too. I have 11,000 trouble-free miles on it so far and love it's capabilities and capacity.

It would've been great to have both but I couldn't justify the extra expense.
