22 owners- anyone have the time to pull the grill and mustache off their truck to see how easy it will be to swap these parts? Really interested in knowing how it’s done and what parts are connected- I.e. is the grill surround mustache part of the actual grill?

I don't have my 2022 yet to take apart. But I have the repair manual on how to replace the mustache. The mustache is 3 separate pieces. Proper way to remove it is to remove the entire bumper then few bolt for mustache and it's clipped in. This may help if people wanna disassemble to wrap it properly. Idk if you can reach the bolts with bumper still on.

Thanks for the diagrams. Anyone know if there's a 3M vinyl wrap for Lunar Rock? Or would paint match be the best way to color match?

Google paint match vinyl wrap- there is a company that makes it- I’m on my phone and too lazy to open a new tab and search.
Adventure vehicles in KC had their grill wrapped on the truck recently- drove it to South Dakota today to c4 to get bumpers and sliders built- by the time he picks it up we will see how the wrap has held up!

I messaged them a couple days ago to find out what wrap they used - they said it was Avery Dennison satin black SW900.

I did Google Lunar Rock Vinyl Wrap and this is the only manufacturer that offers this color. Was hoping someone on these forums have attempted the actual wrap since it Lunar Rock has existed on the previous Gen Tundra. It would be a real bummer if the color is off just enough to make it noticeable. White, MGM, and Black would be the easiest to color match. Lunar Rock, Blueprint, Smoked Mesquite i would imagine would be harder to match.

I saw videos of Quicksand and Cement Gray but they look pretty accurate. I think that would be the best route to take when wrapping the mustache section as well as the rear chrome bumper corners on the Limited trim. The emblems, window trim, and chrome badges could easily be done with a simple black plasti dip.

Kind of a lame video, just shows it AFTER everything is off. The guy says it "wasn't too difficult" but then, if so, he should show it. I suspect it isn't all that easy and there would be lots of cursing in a complete video. Too bad the black grill itself isn't removeable separately like on 2nd Gen Tacomas.

What would be cheaper, paying someone to color match paint those pieces, or just buying the color matched pieces from Toyota? I think wrapping would be the cheapest.

the quote I got to vinyl wrap the mustache was $500. Not sure how much color matched pieces will be. I’m most likely going to wrap it myself or just plasti-dip it because I’m cheap.

Seems like alot for getting them wrapped. Definitely cheaper to diy. Make sure to have a heat gun. Knife less tape is handy too if you have to piece it.

Goddamn I thought the $450 I was quoted for both the rear bumper chrome and mustache was a lot.

Not sure how it is where you live but most body shops here are scheduling months out to repair and paint cars. You may be able to find some guy that paints or something on the side to do it for that cheap in a reasonable amount of time but taking these parts to a body shop and just asking them to throw some paint on it at least where I live isn’t reasonable.

I am very curious to see if Toyota will be selling these as order by color already paint matched once supply catches up. I’m probably going for the black wrap option for now even if it is almost $500.

has anyone actually removed just the grill mustache yet?
Can I unclip it with out removing the rest of the grill?
I'm really tempted to just paint it myself.
I love the truck but cringe every time I look at the brushed Nickle color of the mustache on my limited.

I'm 99% positive you have to pull the whole front clip to pull the mustache pieces. That includes the big upper piece that goes around the grille and the 2 lower chrome pieces on the bumper.

From everything I've seen, it's really not that big of a deal. Make your life easy: Go to Harbor Freight and pickup some panel clip pliers for like $10. Just go slow, don't pull too hard, and if you feel resistance...look for clips that are still in place or wiring harnesses that are still plugged in. I've pulled the front clip off both my 4Runner and my old Taco without any prior how-to's or schematics.

It's not as scary as it looks:
