Looking to put a rack system on my canopy in the future that could support a roof top tent. I have a Snugtop Rebel with Yakima tracks and the sportsman’s package which reinforces the roof to support up to 500lbs (I’m assuming static). I saw a setup the other day with what looked like the Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform on the canopy and it looked pretty sweet.

Would love to hear peoples experiences and see pictures of similar setups.

I saw that. What made me pause is the lack of warranty because of the clearance.

The Rhino Rack platform I saw was on the canopy of a 2018+ black Tundra and it looked awesome. I wanted to stick around and see if the guy was going to show up so I could ask him about his setup but…yeah.

I may just go into Rack Attack or a 4WD shop and start picking some brains.

I just installed my vortex rhino rack system and am very impressed with the quality of the product. I have a Thule cargo box installed on it and have zero whistle coming from the rack even with the sunroof open. I have always been a Yakima guy but wanted to give this system a try. I was sold on the quick disconnect towers. One option is use a third party pay option to insure your purchase. I know pay pay offers purchase protection. Just a idea. I researched rhino rack quite a bit before my purchase and the majority of folks had the same experience as myself. Best of luck and post some pics if you end up getting one. Cheers

I am going to add a 3rd pair of mounts to make a total of 6 points where the platform mounts to the tracks. This is the sale model. Came mostly assembled, just had to add the pieces that secure the panels to the crossbars and attach the front and rear cross bars.
Not a scratch on them when recieved, and I have no concerns about the warranty. I am also adding one to the truck on a backbone and perimeter rail kits to both (also on sale, ordered the largest one and cutting it down to fit, can make the whole thing using only the side pieces leaving the end pieces as extra for other projects).

I would also be doing the side rails if I go the platform route. I have a lot of research to do on the entire setup.

    Thanks for the pictures!

If you want any others, let me know what you want to see. If you want measurements, same deal.
My rails are RR, which I installed myself. So their width will most likely be different than yours.

Chris, that rack looks great, especially how low it sits over the shell. I'm not familiar with Rhino Rack, could you be more specific as to what items you had to order to mount it on your shell? Can you remove the Pioneer platform and run just the mounts/crossbars for carrying somthing like a kayak? Are you adding a mid set of mounts to increase load carrying capacity? Sorry for all the questions, I am just about to order a Snugtop super sport and was thinking about going with Yakima, but this looks like it might be more functional.

    @dpirazzi
I used the following RR parts.
RTC16 tracks which I cut down to the length I wanted.
RLTP track mount legs. I plan to add the third set to distribute weight a little better and I have a habit of overthinking things. So, why deviate from my norm.
Platform is 42113B. This is one in their clearance section for $250. If you plan to buy two, buy in separate orders. Shipping each is was $10, if both on the same order shipping would be $50. Shipping is based on order total, and got delivered freight.
I also ordered 2x 43185B rail kits. These were very oversized and allowed me to cut them to size. Leaving the end rails and a couple mounts from each kit to use for something else.

The platform is held to the legs with one big bolt on each leg. The platform can be removed and you can run the Heavy Duty bars (I believe directly on the legs) or the Vortex bars with an adapter.
I went this route because the way it mounts. It is lower profile because the cross bars are built into the rack rather than having the rack sit on top of the cross bars and the legs are shorter than other options.
Height not including the rail kit is about 4 1/8" from the canopy to the top of the Pioneer platform measured at the legs.

ARE Z Series topper on my ‘18 CM. I ordered it with the roof rails, but the Z Series is not available with additional weight carrying capacity. Since I was packing a large RTT, I made some struts that attach directly under the roof rack rails, and are connected to the bed-side rails. As a bonus, the Uni-Strut that I secured to bottom of the roof with the rail bolts allows me to hang items inside if needed.
Was pretty handy to have a friend with a machine shop and some scrap 1” aluminum hexagonal bar stock laying around. Not to mention the 1/2” heim joints…
On top, I use 3 Rhino Rack Vortex bars. They’ve been great, as long as I keep some lube on the locking pins. If they dry out, they’re a real bearcat to operate.

Thanks Chris, how much weight do you think it can handle? Thinking I would like to be able to stand on top for photography, perhaps with a piece of plywood. I'm ordering the Outdoorsman option on the shell, it is rated up to 500lbs. I'm tipping the scale at 260...

I don't have any of the paperwork with me at the moment. But, if I remember correctly, the cargo rating was around 170 dynamic and 670 static. With the Outdoorsman option, you should be fine with standing on it, as long as you aren't jumping around. However, for legalese, this is just my opinion and not fact. Always discuss with the manufacturer. RR responded to me the next day when I sent them a question.
As @Chad D. posted, if there is any question, there are ways to build supports underneath to take some of the load off the fiberglass.

I don't have one at the moment. My work kinda screwed me out of 3.5 hours of my day yesterday. So I didn't have time to get them finished and installed. But this is what it would look like. As long as it isn't raining and they don't have me doing extra work up here, I should be able to get it done and get a picture when I go down next week.
After the rails are cut, I just have to drill one hole in each rail for the screw that secures it to the corner pieces.

A Rhino Rack platform for $250 is a crazy good deal. Their quality is good, I wouldn't hesitate to buy that. I really wanted that once but ended up with a no-name basket for about that price.

I also have 54”, but now wish I would’ve bought longer ones. The 54” were fine for my RTT, but it’s awfully snug to get my SUP carrier and kayak carrier on together. Both of these systems hold their items flat, so they’re wide. Longer bars would make it easier…

It’s subjective as to which length looks best.
I don’t leave my crossbars on when not hauling gear, as they’re so fast to lock on. If I left them on every day, I might care a little more about the aesthetics.

    Rhino Vortex bars
    Rhino “Quick Mount” legs (RLT600)

ARE uses Yakima tracks if you order the canopy ready for a rack, so I sourced yakima nut inserts to go with the Rhino legs. Bolt thread pattern is same. The Rhino Knut inserts are just a hair too wide to fit the Yakima track slots.

That’s what I’d buy if I did it again. Without a doubt. Another 3” hanging off each side wouldn’t be obtrusive, and would still be narrower than the roof by a bit. I think 54” is too narrow if you plan to mount much of a variety up there.

Yeah I had measured mine the other day and its about 48" or so between the rails so 54" would not leave a lot hanging over.
