My wife and I are travelling through TX in a couple weeks on business and I need recommendations on where to stay in Amarillo? I have been reading the reviews on Hotel / Motel websites and it seems that there are a lot of vehicle break ins around there. Should I be worried or is there a smaller town around there I should consider staying in.

There are a couple of nice hotels near Georgia on I-40, and West.

I grew up there, and ALL of my family still lives there, and have advised friends staying there to stay on I-40 and Georgia and West of Georgia (between Bell and Coulter or Soncy).

East Georgia, east Amarillo or North of that is the older parts of Amarillo and higher crime area.

Where are you traveling to? New Mexico? Which route? Small towns East like Shamrock is good neighborhood or south Lubbock just depends on where you’re going

I am coming form Arizona on I-40 and going East on towards Iowa. Amarillo is about as far as I will be able to make it in one day.

I am looking at Hampton Inn West just south of I-40. I looked at some of the ones more to the West but about every one of the reviews had someone say that they had their car windows broken out.

I am getting old and miss the good old day when I didn't have to really worry about bed bugs and break-ins.

Be better to stay in Shamrock at the Shamrock Holiday Inn. Santa Rosa, NM or Elk City, OK. I would avoid Tuccumcarri, NM. Get some green chile burgers from Carls JR. while passing through NM

I would be sleeping in my truck these days.

Ok, Change of plans I booked a room in Shamrock, TX. It is an hours further drive and will be a big day but the reviews on the motels were much better and it looks like a smaller town with less chance of my truck being broken into. If it were up to me I would just sleep in the truck but the wife likes a bed and toilet for some reason. Thanks all for the help.

I was going to recommend a smaller town. Dumas or Shamrock was going to be my recommendation.
