SR Trim

They would not give me a price at all?
Also why even sell 2wd Tundras?
Maybe they are cheaper but I will never know about this one.

I believe your right.. I don't think they can Max tow (11k lbs) due to the detuned power.

 

Biggest issue I have with the SR trim is the fuel tank size. Don’t think you can add the 32.5 gallon tank to the SR can you?

 

Nope, have to get the SR5 with the SR5 convenience package with option to get 32 gal tank.

 

Anyone see any 8ft beds yet?

May order one as a company vehicle. As long as the hitch, springs, and axle are the same I think 11,000 towing would be fine.

they are forcing buyers to buy a 50k truck

 

I dont think it will have a problem as long as the rest is the same. 8000 is a little tough because a good trailer weighs 3000+ lbs itself.

Some of the derate and detune stuff is just to keep commercial users from maxing them out constantly and durability issues.

On the Ford for example they come with different axles and frames for some selections and models. It looks like Tundra they are all the same.

 

I must say that I'm intrigued by the SR. I look at it as kind of a Super Tacoma.

Let's say you're a Tacoma owner and you're a Toyota guy and you want a bit more power, towing, a roomier interior but don't want to spend $50k for a strippo SR5.

The Good: ~70 more HP and 135 lb/ft of torque, ~2000 lbs more towing capacity. 6-7" wider cab and even the double cab has a bit more legroom(about an inch) than the Taco Double cab. More modern suspension and transmission than the taco.

The Bad: Heavy -- 800 lbs or so heavier than a Taco. Lack of options -- Lets face it, If you're considering an SR, you're probably not the sort who can pay for a platinum out of pocket change. The only things I would want are, the towing package, alloy wheels and a bigger gas tank. However, you're going to be able to buy new take-off wheels on E-bay (there are already some listed) and even the small tank is 1.5 gallons bigger than the Taco with comparable MPG.

I haven't seen an SR and who knows, maybe it's horribly cheap looking compared to the upscale specs, but I doubt it. . .

 

I owned a 2013 Tundra Grade double cab 4x4 with the small V8. I put take off wheels on it after my stock tires were worn out. The truck was black and back then the base model had a black grill and black bumper. I thought it looked pretty good and I think I paid 24.5k new for it back then- it probably stickered for 32k if I had to guess. I think this SR could work well with take offs but I’m really not certain what I’d be giving up with the detuned engine. Are there any other mechanical changes? The key is for the bumper and grill to not make the truck look cheap. I feel like I’d need to see one in the wild. The small screen and lack of package options don’t bother me and I think I can live with a slightly less powerful engine but if it looks bad, even with take offs I think I’d have to move up. When the truck first came out I thought I wanted a TRD grill but I think I might be open minded enough now to see what the SR looks like. We will see. Hoping someone posts pictures soon

 

SR is still my first choice but no one plans on getting one in the near future.

I will most likely go with sr5 based on availability (need something soon).

No SR in my zip it looks like. Going to call a dealer tomorrow a forum member hooked me up with their sales guy.

We just need a shop truck for someone at work.

Anyway, I bet a tune could bypass the detune. A set of black wheels would look nice, the trim is black mix of satin and gloss.

They could get fleet sales with a crew cab 6.5 bed truck, that is a popular style. We just need a double cab 8ft bed, will put a shell on it.

 

A tune will void warranty too

the power difference is in how the engine is tested(chassis vs engine dyno) and the emissions compliance it has to meet. I believe on the heavy duty/commercial trucks they have to dyno them with the EGR active.

ford had a PDF somewhere that explained the difference in the ratings.

I can only see two options. Either Toyota is sandbagging to push people up into higher trims, or the SR is somehow less capable. That could be cooling, axle, frame, etc. Who knows until we see one.

Or, i kinda wonder if we might see a turbo 4 cylinder in the upcoming Tacoma and that would become the entry level option for the Tundra. Something similar to GM’s 2.7L turbo. The detuned 3.5 is just a placeholder until then.

Parker Toyota has one sitting nearby in CDA idaho, if it were a 6.5 I'd buy it and retro the 32 gallon gas tank down the line.
Can't use the 8.1 bed though, I don't want a bowling alley following me around everywhere....

 

I have an sr crewmax 4x4 on order. Hope to have it any day now. My question is does the heated side mirrors? It says on spec sheet but want to be sure. Also spec sheet says day time running lights. Can anyone confirm this?

 

Heated power outside mirrors Standard on SR trim. ....Yes.
LED headlights with Daytime Running Lights (DRL), auto on/off feature, and manual leveling adjustment Standard on SR trim....Yes.

Agreed. Just wish it had an option for the 32 gallon fuel tank and trailer brake controller. If both were offered as an add on package I think the SR trim would be a hell of deal when compared to other base model trucks. Toyota probably didn’t include these two options on the SR to get people to step up to the SR5 and spend a little more money.

 

Yep, agree 100%. I'm buying one anyway, the 22.5 tank was really close to a deal breaker but for the $7000 savings over most of the cheaper SR5 pricing, We'll see how it goes.
Gotta wonder if a guy slipped that 32 gallon under there after the fact the techs would even notice re. warranty. They probably would, but maybe not.
As far as I'm concerned the SR with the 32gal would be the perfect truck and at a bargain price. In 20-30K miles, I'll watch for a 32 g tank from a wrecked truck and will grab it.

 

I agree 100% with both of you. Great idea about getting a tank from a wrecker. Especially now that they're ABS. Watching videos where they show the underside, I gotta say that it looks like there might be room for a tank even slightly larger than a 32.

All I really need is an SR with; tow package, brake controller, large tank and towing mirrors. I detuned powertrain output and towing capacity works for me.

 

Given the past mixed reviews of the Toyota Brake Control and the great performance of my Tekonsha controllers the lack of a built-in brake control is really a good thing to me.
The small tank and detuned engine,not so much.

 

I'm wondering just how easy a tank retrofit would be. I seem to recall someone who did this on the last gen and they had to modify the frame to do it
