Sharing for anyone who cares about (or can contribute knowledge to) this topic...

Seems like lots of folks are having luck with their 2021 or older bed covers working on the 2022 Tundra. An owner of a 2021 Tundra w/ 6.5' Bed tried to transfer his BakFlip MX4 over to his brand new 2022 Tundra w/ 6.5' bed and he reported it doesn't work.

He said the bed cover, "drop brackets" for the OEM rail system, and the mounting rails all seem to match up to the new bed just fine. However, he said the incompatibility comes into play when attempting to use the brackets to mount the MX4 rail to the underside "lip" of the bed cap. They're too wide and won't work. It seems the inside lip clearance on the new bed is much smaller than the 2.5 Gen Tundra.

I ordered a 2007-2021 BakFlip MX4 Tri-Fold on a gamble to see if it would fit. I guess I'll end up returning it when it arrives. I know a few others were talking about doing the same thing as me and ordering the MX4 for the 2.5 Gen so I wanted to share the news.

I have the same bed cover saved from my 2020 truck. Did they say if they are making an adapter kit to fit it on 22?

I cannot imagine Bak making an adapter cover. They will want to sell you a new cover. Might be best to list the old one for sale on this site and buy a new one for the new truck.

I've never had a BakFlip before, but I've had Truxedo and a few other brands. Most brands are willing to sell individual parts to you without forcing you to purchase an entire new cover. I've heard nothing but glowing reviews of BakFlip's customer service...so I imagine they would be much the same.

The only difference between the 2007-2021 cover vs the 2022+ cover is how the rails mount to the bed cap. Gen 2.5 used clamps and then had a separate bracket to drop the OEM bed rails. The 3rd Gen design seems to have a bracket that does both in a single shot. See the instructions below from the 2022 OEM bed cover install instructions. I have to imagine BakFlip's design will be the very similar, if not the exact same. I'm sure they would sell you the brackets & rails if all other items remain the same.

On a side note: I've read a few folks saying that they've spoken to BakFlip and they're planning on releasing their 2022+ covers by the end of Jan/early Feb. The rumor is BakFlip is embargoed from selling their 2022+ covers until then per an agreement with Toyota. I believe they make the OEM Toyota cover too.

Thats great news! I prefer paying a $100 for spare parts instead of losing on reselling my cover, then waiting to buy a new one.

This is good info to know (on Bak’s plans) and let’s hope that timeline holds…as is we can’t seem to get the OEM cover anywhere (not through my dealer anyway)

…so whomever is making the OEM ones (or Toyota) may have underestimated the need for these things…

…I should probably caveat that with supply issues all around is probably an aspect of this whole equation.

Good information and would be great news if Bak and other companies would sell the individual parts to make an older cover work on the new model.

The Toyota tonneau covers are made by REV Industries. Buddy of mine had one his chev which is not branded by chev.

REV and Bak are part of the same company (REV Group). REV is the manufacturer side of the operation that makes “white label” bed covers for OEMs to brand for themselves (I.e. the Toyota Trifold Hard Cover). The REV covers can also sometimes be sold under the REV brand name, but most OEMs Will brand it themselves. BAK is the direct to consumer side of the company. They’re basically the same thing, as I understand it.

My dealership just informed me that my build (due to arrive on March 21) is now lacking the "Toyota" Tri-Fold Tonneau because of shortage.
Sooo... I'm now searching for an aftermarket one...

Do you have a 5.5' bed or the 6.5' bed? There are several option for the small bed. Rough Country has a few styles available now for the small bed. I believe there are others as well.

If you're like me, and you've got the standard bed (6.5') then aftermarket options are a little more limited right now.

I am getting the Crewmax with 5.5' bed. The dealer said there is a shortage of tonneau covers for the 5.5'

The one I ordered was the MX4 for the 2022 SR5 CREWMAX 5.5. I emailed them and they responded within a day or two and sent me a link to order the correct one. Very responsive and helpful.

Awesome and just to confirm it’s on the 22 tundra ? You have pics by chance? I got a awesome deal on a practically new bakflip mx4 for $400. I end up calling bakflip and they sent me out the new brackets for the 22 for free. So we’ll see how that goes.

Yes its on my 2022 Tundra. When you install the brackets, make sure the front side of it is against the sidewall vs in front of you. It may make tightening it a bit tight but you can still do it. I discovered this process allows for the bracket to have more grab against the rails vs. the other way around.
Note that you have to remove the bed rails to install your BakFlip. If you don't want to remove your rails, I discovered that if you find the right T slot nuts that goes inside your rail that you don't need to remove the rails and you can use one side of your existing brackets. You just need to hammer it down a little so that it bends and grab the rails.

It's not that BAK doesn't want to make an adapter to retrofit the cover, I'm sure there are ways you can retrofit the cover to make it work but the reason that these covers are said to not work from the last generation to the new generation is due to the slight differences in the beds. When new generations are released they also make minor tweaks to the bed whether it is a change in tapering or just slightly in length. The covers designed specifically for the 22s are also done with safety, security, and keeping out the weather in mind. Retrofitting a cover to a bed that it isn't designed for could potentially be a safety hazard for the driver and other drivers on the road if the rails and cover arent secured properly.

While I understand buying a brand new cover can be a big purchase reach out to me anytime as we do offer forum special pricing on the covers we sell to help ease the cost some

I am making my Gator from my 2021 work for now. It's just a hair short but it fits enough to keep prying eyes out of the back of my truck. It kept my stuff dry in rain despite a small gap at the tailgate. I may look at "rigging" it up with some seal type material. It's high desert where I live and this will keep the snow out of the bed just fine in the winter.

Did anyone have any issues connecting the water tube linkage? I can’t describe it very well. It’s where the tube connects to top bracket on cover. It’s hard abs on abs and the two do not seem to stay connected. Keeps falling out.

Do you need to connect the tube? I'm in SoCal and it hardly ever rains here. I've got a cover on order.

I’ve never hooked mine up. I live in Oregon but on the dry side of the mountains. We get some rain but not at all like the valley. If I had water collecting in the bed or had anything in there that needed to be totally dry then I would do it.

Yeah. The drain hose tube first connects to a plastic connecter, which is then supposed to be connected to a spout which is also plastic. One does fit into the other, but it's shiny plastic and they have nothing to hold them together. Just falls apart. I can probably rig something, but it's annoying.
