    Hi guys,

So with the Tundra configurator, it seems like here in Southern California, I can't build out the SR5 CrewMax with the "$7315 TRD Sport Premium Package with options" in any color except the Lunar Rock for some reason. That specific package has the larger 14" screen.

So if I want the any other exterior color, I'm stuck with only the lower TRD Sport Packages with the 8 in screen. Does anybody know if later on we can switch out just the 8in head unit and replace it with the 14" on our own?

I would like to have the TRD Sport package with the softex seats and 14" screen in army green but it looks like I cant do that with any dealer in California or Nevada or Arizona. It's unfortunate because I did see some dealers on the east that are able to put that package on any color.

I think every region is a crap shoot on what they're dolling out. I got the that truck in LR so why can't it be shipped out west? Good luck

I would say it's a safe bet it would cost more trouble than it's worth to exchange for a 14". Probably not even possible.

If I can't get what I want in my region I'll probably fly to the dealer who has what I want.

Buy a Limited, or find a different brand of truck.

Toyota wants to continue a top down “customers have no say” mentality like they’re handing out Tercel’s that cost $10K and only have two option boxes. Except now they’re trying that bullshit with a $50-$70K truck. Let them know their business model sucks and buy something else or keep what you have.

No, I don't want a Limited or Platinum or any other trim. The reason specifically (in addition to softex and 14" sreen) why I want the TRD Sport Package is because everything is body colored. The front grill surround, the side fender flares, the mirrors, the back bumper inserts. Everything is color matched to the body. It's the only trim that has that. All the others either have a variation or different color/finishes. I don't like it. I might have to fly to an east coast dealer that is willing to sell me one with the configuration but as of now, a few had said no to out of state buyers.

That's probably what I'm going to have to end up doing. Whenever inventory is available.

It will probably cost less money to vinyl wrap those trim pieces in body color on a Limited than you think. Probably less than the cost of airfare to go get the unicorn SR5 and fuel/hotel/food costs to road trip it back, and you end up with a nicer truck.

The Sport also has a lowered suspension. Hardest part with wrapping is finding a good color match. My 2019 Sport factory grill surround the below headlight fillers and I think the center bumper, do not match in color.

I’m a fan of Toyota quality, I’m not a fan of Toyota marketing and production choices that limit customer choices, and often ignore customer desires.

Fair enough. I trust Toyota has done their homework and offer what the masses want. Your desires, my desires, Joe"s desires vary (alot). Unfortunately Toyota cannot build every option/feature that everyone wants. Everyone has the option to buy from other than Toyota. Just saw where Toyota surpassed GM to become the #1 automobile manufacturer in sells in the U.S. 2021. G.M. had held that title for the last 90 years. Tells me Toyota must be doing something right. And yes I realize that Toyota Tundra is nowhere close to the big three in truck sells. Have a great day sir. and a happy New Year and enjoy ( I believe) your F150?. I have owned 5 F150s (2005/2010/2011/2016/2017) but that is a story for another day,

I would guess that GM fell short in 2021 because they couldn't produce the vehicles, not that they couldn't sell them.

Some just likes to bash Toyota for the times they find themselves in. Can't believe these folks come here daily for some kind of weird pleasure. Bellicose internet truck basher are telling Toyota how to run a business. lol. Just open 1000's Toyota owned dealerships....yeah, come on Toyota :lalala:

This is why I was able to get the 21 SR5 TSS and then finish it the way I wanted. Mind you it is a 21 so everything was and is available,,, different story for a 22 for a good while I’d imagine?? I would think that after everything gets back to semi normal and dealers and San Antonio get on the same page getting certain additional items might not be a problem?? Or at least one would hope so. Everything is to new and in weird times with availability issues and Tundra being set just to get some out the doors??? Best of luck to everyone.

Toyota has a stockpile of automotive chips and forced their suppliers to stockpile chips after the Fukushima disaster shut down the Reneases chip plant in Japan exposing a supply chain weakness years ago.

So props to Toyota in having some foresight on that one. They were able to hit production goals for longer than the competition.

    I don’t own a Ford F-150. Probably never will.

I’m the weirdo who is on the same original owner (that would be me) 2007 Toyota Tundra Limited 4X4 Double Cab with the 5.7L 3UR-FE. The Tundra keeps running with minimal extra maintenance or cost, so I keep driving it because it has given me no reason to not trust it.

So I’m among a handful of guys who actually utilize that Toyota longevity from new on the lot to 15 years later. I’m the guy who chuckles when he sees others make claims about buying a Tundra for durability and their signature lists Toyota Tundra’s spaced 3 model years apart to their current rig.

There are certain features or lack of on the new Tundra that I find vexing depending on trim level. For example lack of tow/recovery hooks on off road package and TRD Pro models. I’ve only used mine once in 15 years, but they’re like carrying a pistol: you virtually never need them but when you do you need them really damn bad! I wouldn’t use them to recover others, but to get recovered. In a few more years my son will be old enough to go on hunting trips with me if I get back into it, and the more I consider it the more I think being able to more easily get recovered if we get stuck is a good idea.

At least on the TRD Pro I suspect an aftermarket skid plate that braces on a frame cross members could have some recovery hooks incorporated since there’s no air dam to be interfered with.

OP, I was stuck on the 14inch originally myself, then I saw it in person. I didn't feel it added anything to the truck for me, and the UI just felt like I had an iPhone with the text enlarged. I feel the 8 inch is better physically integrated into the dash (doesn't look like a small tv slapped on the dash) and it has the exact same functionality outside of the camera views.

Just my 2 cents, but I understand your frustration. The Tundra configurator and the options available to spec are garbage.

I bought a 2020 Trd pro in army green last year. Flew to TN and drove it back to Cali through that crazy Texas winter storm that happened. It was super fun to have a new truck on new roads and explore around.

Why don't you just find a dealer that has what you want? go test drive the truck locally and buy it from home and fly out and get it, or load it on a truck and ship it to yourself. Plenty of dealers out there that will put that combo together. I would start talking with other dealers, get pricing done and do everything from home. When I bought my pro all I did when I got to the dealer was sign 3 pieces of paper and the salesman tossed me my keys and I left. Not to mention I saved about 7k comparing it to the exact same truck in CA (the CA one actually had 14k miles and mine had 7100 when I got it, it was a WIN WIN)

I found one specific dealer in KY that had three (Army Green, Supersonic Red, Lunar Rock) all listed as in transit with the exact options I wanted. SR5 CrewMax 5.5 Bed, TRD Sport Package (black softex), Premium Audio (14in screen), TRD Convenience (Blind Spot, Bigger Fuel Tank etc). I called them to try to buy one of them (I would have taken any of those three colors) but they said "Sorry we are not selling to out of state buyers". So at least I know that dealers in KY (and maybe surrounding states?) are able to order the truck I want. Now it's just a matter of finding one that is willing to sell it to me.

Pretty sure you can have the dealer order you painted mirror and door handle caps. I know you can get them for the 2nd gen. Their not that expensive. Theres YouTube videos of folks installing them. Looks fast and easy. The door handle caps just snap on. If you look closely, at some of the reviews of the new tundra. When they show a close up of the doors, you can see that the inside of the handle is black with painted cap around it.
As for the grill surround, I dont know. I plan on getting some if I get the pro. To me the black door handles and mirrors make it look like a low end trim like the base models or work trucks.

I’m probably in the minority (with Halligan!), but I also think the smaller screen looks better and integrates into the interior better.

I HATE screens that pop up over the dash like some afterthought, although I had no choice with the Limited trim. If the real estate was used well that’s one thing, but the bigger screen only seems to give us abnormally large elderly mode

Judging by this teardown, it will fit right into the same spot, its just a matter of the connections in the back of the stereo. We already know they function the same, literally just bigger screen. Does anyone have any knowledge of what the connections are in the back of the 8in?

I don't think we're gonna see people selling the 14" infotainment, any

Afterthought? Possibly, but it also looks like they wanted a comparison to the tesla screen that looks like an iPad was slapped onto the dashboard.
