Need some advice/input from the hive-mind on this pretty hairy situation.

    I just bought a slightly used (7,000 miles) 2021 Platinum from a (non-Toyota)
dealer in Phoenix last week. Drove it home to Albuquerque on New Years Eve,
and (almost) all was well. I say almost because as we were leaving the dealer,
I noticed the driver switch for the passenger window wasn't working. No biggie
I thought, probably just needs to be plugged back in or something. Whole drive
home, trucks works flawlessly. Life is good.

Saturday the truck pretty much just sits all day, then Sunday I decide to try and
figure out the window switch deal. Pop the switch panel up, and it's all plugged
in. Weird. Unplug it, and plug it back in, and it still doesn't work. Oh well. I'll
take it to the local dealer to get a new switch assembly under warranty.

Later that day, I take it down the street to show my buddy my new ride, and as
I'm leaving his house, my key fob wouldn't work. Huh. Dead battery in the fob
maybe? Who knows. So I unlock the truck with the key, and the truck says "no
key detected" (or whatever it says when you don't have fob with you), and then it
says to hold my key up to the start button to start the truck, which I do, and it
    starts.

HOWEVER, now it says there's an SRS Airbag malfunction, and my tire pressure
light is lit up, and it still says no key detected, and I have no nav. Also, all door
locks AND windows won't work. Truck has gone completely coo coo for Cocoa
    Puffs. WTF!?!?!

Take the truck in to the dealer yesterday, they hook it up and it throws like 30
codes. ECU codes. Electrical codes. Airbag codes. GPS codes. All kinds of shit.
Service Advisor STRONGLY suggests I contact the dealer I bought it from and get
my money back. Said he's been with Toyota 16 years, and he's NEVER seen a
single vehicle throw this many codes. Especially one that's basically new.

I call the dealer in Phoenix, and they're freaked. They insist they won't leave me
high and dry, and I believe them. Sales Manager says he's gonna take to the GM
and get back to me. Today, a service manager from the dealer calls and says
occasionally the alarms they install on their trucks to keep them from getting
stolen off the lot can cause some strange electrical issues. Suggests I take it back
to Toyota so they can run a full diagnostic (which the dealer will pay for) to see
what it's gonna take to fix the truck. Seems ok to me.

I call my Service Advisor at the Toyota dealer, and he says he is going to quote
them something silly like $3k to diagnose, as he does not think the truck should
be on the road. Said there are WAY too many things going on with it, and he
would hate to see me dealing with gremlins in the electrical system for years to
come. Again said I should tell the dealer I want to return the truck, and get my
    money back.

So thoughts on all this? Should I try and get the truck fixed? It's EXACTLY what I
want and I really hate to give it back since 2021's are getting REALLY hard to find.
Especially in Platinum trim. Or, should I take it back to Phoenix and tell the dealer
to kick rocks and cut me a check?

TLDR: My (almost) new 2021 Platinum is f*cked electrically. What should I do?

Thanks for any thoughts and guidance y'all!!!

Can you get a second, or in your case, a third opinion? If the dealer installed alarm system did cause the problem the selling dealer is on the hook for all the repairs.

Still under Toyota warranty. Toyota should fix it for free. Unless rodent chewed up some wires.

Unless there are 36001 miles on that 2021 (and there isn't) this should be a factory warranty issue..

I'd definitely take it back and demand my cash, it's going to be a problem child. Rodents? Flooded? Severe electrical short?

^Agree and agree. Selling dealer is on the hook for fixing it, Toyota may not help because it's not a factory defect. I once installed a battery backwards on my now wife's Corolla back when we were young "Walmart gave me the wrong battery with reversed + - and I didn't pay attention." It blew all kinds of fuses and half the crap inside the car stopped working throwing all kinds of codes. Luckily all it killed was fuses and not an ECU so I fixed it over the course of 3 days chasing and replacing.

It's probably fixable but do you want to deal with it? I'm guessing you'll probably have to go back to the selling dealer, I'm also guessing the selling dealer will want to try and fix it rather than giving your money back. Hell there's a chance something right now is still hooked up wrong since the issues keep getting worse. Either way, it sucks and I'm sorry to hear it.

20210718_090029.jpg Sucks, i have a 21 platinum and on day 2 it needed to have a heater core replaced. Was in the shop for a month. It was a hassle but in the end toyota gave me my first month payment back and i didnt have to pay anything and now all is well. My truck is exactly what I wanted so for me it was worth it.

This whole things sucks to hear. The fuckery these days with aftermarket parts and electronics. I am to a point where I refuse to add anything electrical or mechanical that isnt an OEM part. Unfortunately, these guys made that decision for you.

First, trying to get a “refund” is probably a tough road…especially since its a non-Toyota dealer, the truck is still under factory warranty and now there is an out for Toyota. The fact that there is this non-OEM dealer installed complicates the issue.

Factory warranty will possibly help if it isn’t rodent damage and clearly not something tied to that alarm.

Id also take a peek at the cabin filter…many times rodents like the cabin filter area for nesting.

Another thought, the fact that you had electrical issues as you were leaving the dealer makes me wonder if this issue is why the truck was traded off or sold at auction to a non-Toyota dealer. Is there any Toyota maintenance history? Is there any maintenance info from the selling dealer? Like, has it been into a Toyota dealer for these issues?

That sounds like rodents running amok on dealer lot, a failed install of a remote start, flooded vehicle, or a failed electrical project like dual battery, headlight upgrade, or winch project.

There hasn't been any reported situation like yours from a factory Tundra, or any Toyota, I've ever read about and the only ones close to your situation involved one of the above situations.

The tundra does have a sensitive electrical system.

Only simple thing I can think of is to try a new or different battery.

You guys are amazing. Thank you SO much for all the feedback!

As far as rodents go, zero sign whatsoever.

As far as previous history of electrical work being performed, zero. There ARE records from it being serviced a couple times at a dealership, but it was just oil changes and a bed liner install.

I briefly thought about trying a new battery, as my old Lexus GX460 did something similar when the battery died on it. Still had enough to start the car, but not enough to power all the electronics and it wigged out. I think I'll try that!!!

As of right now, the dealer I bought it from would like me to take it to Toyota to have a full diagnostic run on it, which they will pay for. From there I think they'll decide if they want to pay to have it fixed or if they'll give me my money back on it.

Have they cleared all the codes to see if they come back?

My 2020 threw a ton of codes after a dealer unplugged my heated seat to see if it was working properly. (Apparently they don't get very warm)

It randomly threw a bunch of codes after so I took it back and they cleared them and never came back. They said it can happen when you unplug stuff.

Bad battery will cause all sorts of issues, load test it and check voltage. If power is low it can cause all sorts of codes, lights, issues. And just because it will start the truck does not mean the volts are where they should be, could be dead cell or whatever.

That is very true, on my 2020 Silverado stuff like the power assisted brakes and many other things would throw codes and stop working. That may be wishful thinking in OP's case though since it all started with a single window issue before progressing. Fingers crossed for OP on a swift resolution.

Just had the battery and alternator checked. 100% functional. :(

It's going into the Toyota dealer Monday morning for a full diagnostic on the dime of the dealer I bought it from. Fingers crossed for good news. I REALLY want to keep this truck!!!

Let the selling dealer pay the diagnosis fee at the Toyota dealer of your choice, then depending on what they come up with, decide how YOU want it handled!
Hopefully they’re a stand up business and will take care of ya.

Man this is a terrible situation. Sorry to hear it’s happening to you.

At least the dealer you brought it from seems to be standing by the sale so far. Hope you get to keep your truck in the end! Keep us posted.

Why is Toyota wanting to change for diagnostic on a 2021 with 7,000 miles? Does not matter where the truck came from, this should be on Toyota’s dime because it is still under the 3/36 Warranty. Unless they can prove that an aftermarket accessory is causing this issue, they are on the hook to fix it. It does not sound like they have proven that at this point.

Good to hear that the selling dealer is standing up to take care of it and I hope they do so going forward. I can understand you wanting to keep the truck, I really enjoy my Platinum, but you don't want to deal with a bunch of problems in the future. Good luck.

I’ve seen several dealerships that will tell you that in case they find you caused the issue. Warranty doesn’t cover misuse or road damage. If it turns out it’s a warranty issue, you don’t pay the diagnostic fee.

Yep. Since the dealer I bought it from installed their bullshit anti-theft device, Toyota won't authorize warranty work on the electrical system by default. If they determine AFTER the diagnostic that the alarm had nothing to do with all the problems, the repairs will be covered under warranty. Otherwise the selling dealer will either have to pay for the repairs, or take the truck and give me my $56k back.

Would of been better if they removed the antitheft device to see if that corrected the issue, before bringing toyota warranty into it. I'd give them a chance to fix it, but odds are they've given toyota an out warranty wise. Sucks, but hope it gets resolved or you get your money back and find a better deal.
