Tailgate assist replacing?

    Looks like I’ll need to replace the piston that assist in the lowering of the tailgate.. I can’t find any videos.. Anyone guide me in the right direction?

    Super easy takes 5 min. Two screws to remove the driver taillight- it pulls straight out from the side not from the back. Remove the metal clips and replace.

    How can you repair when the Back Door Stabilizer Joint is missing? Has anybody ever made that repair? The piston itself still works. Thank you in advance for any help.

    I just replaced with the part from Rock Auto - super easy to replace but didn’t slow tailgate down as much as I expected. The one that added to my F250 lowers the tailgate very calmly - slow and easy. The Tundra drops pretty fast and still hits with a jolt. Is this normal? Thanks.

    I'm wondering the same thing. What's the stock tailgate damper feel like? Does it control the tailgate drop without any human intervention or are you still expected to assist with the lowering?

    If I dont help it, mine drops pretty quickly then gets about two inches from the bottom, bounces back up a little, then settles slowly.

    I have the stock damper TG, 2021 SR5. I don’t have to guide it down at all, just let it go. Goes down smoother than Johnny Walker Blue.

    I had to have my tailgate replaced and when I got it back it does that exact same thing. It wasn’t like that before it dropped very smoothly from the start. Looking to replace the damper I guess. Hope this part helps

    I'm going to see what the dealer says. Sounds like it should be covered under warranty.

    Doesnt bother me all that much but it would be neat to have hands free opening.

    I just replace the shock and the arm to lower it on my 2012 tundra and it didn't help at all the tailgate drops very fast and hard I'm not happy with it is there anything on the 2012 that will work

    You probably need to replace the hinge too. The plastic bushing is prone to breaking.
