I saw a website the other day that is selling an adapter that takes the place of the Toyota filter and lets you run a regular spin on type oil filter. Is there any real point to this other than possible convenience or maybe running a larger filter? It does also hang down and could possibly be damaged on a trail, but the front skid cover still covers it and it is no worse placement than most oil filters on other brand trucks.

    Here it is

Kinda nice to easily see the filter element for inspection, nuff said.

I think the main question/concern would be the bypass valve. The spin-on filter could have the bypass pressure set differently than the one built into the factory oil filter housing. To high would probably be fine. To low would reduce filtration. To close to the factory valve and who knows what happens. There is also the question of overall oil flow. It seems Toyota favors a setup that is biased towards flow over maximum filtration.

IMO its a lot of money for no meaningful advantages. Yes the cartridge filters are not as easy to change as a spin-on, but its still easy albeit messier. Beyond that, larger filter isn't really a benefit unless you are going for really long OCIs.

    Too many, but not enough....
I kinda like where its at from the factory and how its designed since its a pretty clean swap out for me using the drain hose attachment from motiv or whatever.

For $240, I'll stay with the cartridge based filters. As MadMax said, it's easy enough with a drain hose attachment. I do wish it was on top though to make oil changes less messy.

my Ford 2.7 ECO had the cartridge filter right on top front facing upwards. No drips and no mess per say and it was one of the better things about that truck.

I have to change oil on a 21 4runner and my tundra. Many times on the same day back to back.

I call it a work out.

    good enough for me.

And yes the inspection aspect has me thinking there is more wisdom in the canister style filters than I previously realized.

Here's a blurb that I have saved in my notes about Toyota's rationale for the adaptation of the cartridge type engine oil filter:

I have also encountered information that this setup allow Toyota to control the bypass oil pressure to it's standards, which is that coil spring that you'll notice inside the filter cap as noted by @pman9003.

Your mileage in implementing this filter change strategy as envisioned by Toyota's engineers may vary. ;)

What filter are you using with yours? I've only had mine for about 5 months and my last filter developed a small hole and started leaking. I think it may have been rubbing on the sway bar somehow. Need to investigate it a little more. The filter was a FL400 S which has a 3.2 inch outside diameter.

    Mine is the Fram XG3600.

I’ve done a lot of research on the bobistheoilguy forum and the Fram Synthetic XG series is pretty much the best filter you can buy for the price.

I noticed how close the hex bolt for the little oil filter door on my RCI skid plate got to the oil filter. I think a piece of paper might of fit. I didn’t want it to possibly cause an issue so I swapped it out for a smaller bolt.

I've been thinking of adding the Baxter adapter to my 2012 Tundra. I don't have the factory flimsy skid plate on my truck so oil changes are much easier. Also, I only have 18K miles on my truck so il changes are not very frequent. Still going to consider buying it if they were to do a group buy.

My 21 Tundra didn't have the skid plate. I was all set to remove it when I got the adapter but to my surprise there wasn't any. So it's a little concerning that the oil filter hangs down kind of low and no skid plate to protect it.

Too bad you're (I assume) not near Wyoming. I have the stock skid plate with a hole cut in it to access the filter sitting outside my garage.

I had plans to remove mine and cut a hole in it for the filter. I was surprised that it was missing. I'm not sure when it was removed since i bought the truck used and also had the TRD lowering suspension installed. The shop that installed the lowering kit could have removed it and forgot to install it.

I'm a little concerned if it hangs lower than the factory canister since I'm lowered 2 inches in the front.

My crewmax is a TRD lowered and supercharged street queen so I'm not too worried about

That's extremely nice of you. I'm in Southern California. WHich part of Wyoming are you in? My brother-in-law lives in Casper and works for FedEx.

Yes, I bought it in 2014 and it had 2400 miles on it. Needless to say it is not my daily driver. I honestly don't even remember the last time I drove it.

Thanks but I'm in Florida. I just need to wait until my son is visiting with my previous 18 Tundra and take it while he's in the pool.

I'm in Gillette, which is about an hour and a half to the northeast of Casper. I usually go through Casper once every 6 months or so.
