So my OCD has a death grip on me. Im stuck on the whole chrome delete thing. All the chrome/ silver/fake blue steel that separates the upper and lower dash was all taken apart, wet sanded, sprayed with adhesion promoter and then sprayed black ( even those silver strips on all four doors). I even went so far as to have my daughter cut a piece of vinyl on her cricut maker to cover the key hole on the glove box.
DC9C3C78-1147-46D0-855A-5AE7CF6CD5EE.jpg I just swapped out the head unit last month for apple carplay and the black trim. E798707B-5E48-4A0F-88AA-86212B0C881A.jpg
I also put a piece if heat shrink on the shifter post. Anyway as you can see the only silver left is the damn HVAC trim. Apparently this is a problem for anybody looking to do a total chrome delete. Then two days ago it hit me. A simple idea. What about coloring it like with an assortment of black fine tip sharpies and acrylic paint pens. So i got the old head unit out of the garbage in my workshop and went to town. Just did a quickie trial to see how it covered and how many coats was needed. Then I left it outside in the freezing temps and sure enough it held up so far.

2DBED2A7-7F7B-49C5-B65E-0F4831C20E58.jpg Like I said. This was just a quick trial run. Obviously would be much more precise and careful with the real piece. Opinions????

Could be wrong, but I think the chrome is meant to reflect light at night to help with reaching around for vents, cupholders, shifter, etc.

    It's good
Only chrome delete where it is reasonably easy and has a high success rate. Or replacement parts, etc. Thats pretty insightful to shrink wrap the shifter, but - WTF? and - doesn't it have baby print on it still?

I think meds help with everything, I have been known to self med quite a lot. I too have thought how to get rid of the chrome on the head unit. Do a Google search for SR 2018 interior, take a look at the head unit / dash. Let me know what you think

Leave the chrome. Resist the anti-chrome 'wokeness' trend. ;)

How do you plan to keep the back lights functional on the AC unit?

Too late. All his chrome is gone, and all the matte silver. All that's left is the brushed metal stuff. No chrome left in there already.

My plan was to use a very fune tip acrylic paint pen to carefully shade around all the factory markings that are backlit. Im thinking its gonna be a little tedious and if I stick to 30 minutes a day to stay sharp and steady it will probably come out alright. If not i can always get a replacement HVAC head unit and call it a day

I think since you replaced the radio surround with black, it really makes the silver of the climate control panel stand out. It would bother me as well.

I LOVE MY CHROME. The more, the merrier - bumpers, grill, wheels, badges, dash trim, et al. When I spend over $50k on a vehicle, I want it to look like a $50k vehicle instead of a bare bones budget base model. And, since I don't stare at my dashboard while driving, I've never had a problem with glare from the sun (other than the radio display & similar, which has nothing to do with chrome).

I'm currently building an overland truck, with a color-matched A.R.E DCU bed cap (twin rear doors, tailgate gone), basket on the cab roof, floor slide inside the bed, and similar. When the weather warms up, I already have chrome "Tundra" and "4x4" badges for the rear doors of that bed cap. I'll update my profile when it's all finished this spring. In bronze mica, it's going to be pretty.
