So let's say - hypothetically - that I own several handguns. Eight handguns, to be hypothetically exact. If I did, I would be looking for a nice firearm safe for my house that is designed for handguns. Most firearm safes I have researched are for rifles, and the ones intended for handguns are usually just small lock boxes. I know this because this is what I would be using now if I had any handguns - old school lock boxes. I'd really like to have a larger, high quality safe that is designed around storing several handguns.

    :D

What are you guys using? Any suggestions?

Try Pendelton safes. They have a rotating rack that works well with handguns.

Costco offers really well made gun safes with fire protection. Elastic holders inside the door for pistols or magazines, zippered compartments, shelves, and room for rifles at the bottom… which can be repurposed for important documents, other valuables, whatever. They’re a good counterpoint to the more expensive options like that posted above.

Sadly, the safes are really heavy and don’t float. As a result, the safe did not stop my losing all my guns in a terrible boating accident. Sorry, I cannot even tell you what brand Costco sells….

I own two Liberty's for all my security needs. One is a 30-40 (I don't remember exactly how big, bought a few years ago, but it's big and heavy as hell well over 700#) and a 12 which is tall and thin (but sturdy unlike a stack-on) - about 250#. I like my libertys because the doors bolt/bar on all four sides. When the doors shuts it feels secure.

I know there are videos out there where ppl say these can be broken into when flipped/pushed over. My thoughts: 1) good luck tipping my heavy one - if they manage, that'll make noise and my backup safe is prepared for just that. 2) cameras.

Check out the ProVault 12. Get some shelves, smile, call it a day.

Get a numbered keypad, not mechanical. So much faster when time matters.

Find a safe that you think is large enough to fit your needs for the next 10yr. Buy the next larger one that has a top shelf. Buy or build a pistol rack.
    https://gun-racks.com/pistol_racks
Use any extra space to add more guns, hold sensitive docs (suggest in a waterproof pouch with a desiccant pack), and anything you don't want to get snatched in a smash and grab while you are gone.

I will advise if you go with an electronic keypad, do you research into how long they last and what the locksmith charge to open it when it fails. The *key* is to replace the electronic keypad before it fails, no pun intended.

I vote a rifle safe with a mechanical lock. You’ll find stuff to put in it, hopefully some rifles too. Some have nice door panels with pockets for handguns and you can configure the shelves how you would like to fit whatever handgun rack you want to go with.

In my opinion get something big and heavy enough that someone can’t get into it or get it out of your house during a typical burglary.

Before the boating accident, long guns would be in a long gun cabinet. Handguns would be in a regular fire rated document safe (in boxes or holsters) that I got at BiMart or somewhere like it. I think Home Depot has them… they are tan. You know what I mean.

Additionally, again before the accident, I had a couple Stack On single handgun cases in the house. Quick 4 digit code to open so the gun was safe and secure (it is law here now btw) but accessible.

Hope that hypothetically helps until you have a boating accident.

@MotoTundra makes some good points: I have door pockets on my larger safe that has about six pockets designed for handguns and several other larger pockets and these all work well as designed and free up space. Also going big and heavy (maybe not crazy heavy if you have plans to put it somewhere tight or up/downstairs) is the way to go imo too - for safety of your items.

I just don't have the time to mess with mechanical. If I need something in the safe I want it in approx 3 seconds, not longer. When my large safe was in garage (varying temps from +90 to -15°) I ran the same 9volt in my safe for an easy 2-3 years without replacing. When it went, slapped a new NAME BRAND 9volt in and worked like day one (don't use generic batteries with Liberty safes, had one laying around and I tried it before name brand and it didn't work). I deal with mechanicals at work and would never buy one for home protection. Like the old saying about police: "when a burglar (or worse) comes breaking in, police are only minutes away."
I'd like to help my local law enforcement I'm anyway possible.

I HAD a small Fortress gun cabinet that I installed a few shelves and magnets in, worked great until I tried to take on my boat that unfortunately sank shortly after.

    Kind of like this one.

But be warned, it doesnt float.

Consider 2 separate concepts; security and concealment. These are not mutually exclusive but also aren’t always integrated.
If you aren’t following me, let me explain. You can hide guns. You can have guns in a safe. You can hide your gun safe.
What exactly is your goal? I prefer some of each option. Secure a safe. Hide some in various secure locations and hide a locked up area

This. I do not those trust keypads. Had one many, many years ago stop working and was key only as a backup.

I appreciate all the replies. I have 11 different tabs open now looking at some of the options you have all suggested.

I feel like I tend to lean more in favor of a keyed locking system rather than an electronic keypad. I do also see value in being able to access the contents quickly. However, this will not likely be used for items I intend to access quickly. I will have my daily carry and home defense guns in smaller, quick deploy safes/lock boxes elsewhere in the house, and the new safe I am looking for will house the remaining handguns and shotguns in the bedroom closet. Hypothetically.

I actually think a gun cabinet may suffice. But these safes sure are pretty.

I do have a boat, and I use it frequently. I sure hope I can find a safe that floats.

These are a great concept and would be good for keeping guns safely stowed at arms reach. Plus it has kind of a cool Jason Bourne feel to it, you've gotta admit.

I wonder, if someone were to procure one of these Fortress brand safes, what vendor they might use?

Ideally, the bulk of my collection would be housed in the safe/cabinet, but I'd also like to have some items stowed away out of sight for quick access.

This. I bought a gun safe after storing everything in a closet, and honestly the only reason I bought it was to make it harder for children or morons to get a gun. I looked at a bunch of safes and all of them are pretty pathetic as far as actual security, I bet I could break into mine inside an easy half an hour with just a cut off wheel, let alone if I grabbed the plasma or a torch. The safe if anything is a calling card to a burglar unless it's hidden. Unless you spend a fortune on a safe the only thing that really changes is their natural disaster ratings, otherwise I wouldn't get too wrapped around the axle on what you pick. At the end of the day it's some 1/8" steel walls with fire bricks underneath and some carpet.

I should've said that kids are a big risk factor in my house. I want quick access with safe like (not locker) security due to my situation. If I didn't have kids in my house who were still too young to be trusted and trained around firearms then I might replace some of my storage needs with a locker or two. I teach them young, but there's no reason to roll the dice on something as important as family safety. My wife was actually hounding me to get the second safe.

I don’t mean when the battery fails the unit, I mean when the unit fails. It will be a costly service call. A friend of mine had his 10 year old electronic keypad unit fail when the safe was locked. Good quality safe, manufacturer still in business, great customer service. Unfortunately it had to be opened by professionals. He replaced it with a mechanical.

I have a few locksmiths in the family, coincidentally they were the ones that opened my friends safe.

I have different setups for different things. Storage- I’m good with mechanical. I’m never going in there in a hurry.

For fast access when you are home, Hornady makes a RapId Night Safe that uses an RFID bracelet to open. Just put the bracelet (your hand) near the sensor on the face of the safe. Spring loaded drawer pops open, hands free baby!

I have an acquaintance who made the "hidden safes" with rfid fobs - had a buddy buy one from him that was a fake air return vent, and it was a very sweet set up. He's since switched professions to much larger jobs (said the work was detailed as hell, so was the mark up unfortunately he said, ha!).

I guess if you get a chance to grab one up, if it's in you're price point, good on you.

After just having to break into my cheap SentrySafe because the lock mechanism decided to stop working randomly, I would advise spending the money and getting a quality safe. It was shockingly easy to break into that SentrySafe also. Literally just caved the door in until it broke the lock mechanism (which is plastic). My next safe will be coming from someone like Liberty Safes.
