Anyone purchased, installed, or sold a metal roof lately that looks like shingles… best brand? pictures? How does material price compare to asphalt shingles?

Will be reroofing next year and the metal shingles are intriguing, but don’t see them much in my area.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
We thought about them for our re-roofing project for spring of 2022 but decided to go with F-Wave synthetic wood shake style shingles.

I took those photos after I tested the sample by beating it with a smooth faced framing hammer.

Class 4 hail rated, 130+ wind, and class A fire.

As for cost it will be an $10,000 upgrade over a standard architectural asphalt shingle for our roof. So not cheap.

On the question of metal shingles such as Decra stone coated steel, I can only speak to our neighbors across the street. They’ve had stone coated steel on their roof since we bought our home in 2013. We’ve had 3 major hail events in that time, and we will be putting on the 2nd roof we’ve done since buying. The current roof went on in 2016, and was totaled out this year in June.

During that span of years I’ve had the shit bag storm chasing roofers all over my roof every couple of years. I’ve never seen them knock on my neighbors door or leave any business cards. They know that roof is nigh indestructible to most hail. None of them would even give me a quote on anything but regular ass shingles though.

Finally this year with the roof having sustained 2 major hail events and being obviously damaged to even my untrained eye; I waited for the storm chasing ass clowns to leave town for the fall and called a local roofer that does high end new construction.

That was an enlightening conversation. Basically stone coated steel shingles would be as expensive or more expensive than the F-Wave Revia shingle, cost being pretty similar but their preference being the newer F-Wave due to better overall performance and finished cosmetic choices. Both are excellent though, and should be the last roof you ever have to mess with on your home.

Standing seam metal is also a good option if you want to spring for 22 gauge material, and you have a steep enough pitch that hail dents won’t be as visible since it will still dent if hail is big enough.

It was also explained to me that most roofers in the storm chasing business don’t like putting on Decra, F-Wave, or high grade thick gauge metal for a few reasons:

1.) They want to come back in 5 years and replace a roof next time it hails. If you put a damn near impervious roof on a house there goes your repeat revenue stream.

2.) The alternative products take more time and expertise to properly install, reducing productivity when their goal is to bang out a big volume of jobs and head off to the next storm area.

3.) Most homeowners just can’t afford to make an upgrade that big out of pocket, and therefore a lot of roofers of the storm chasing variety never gain experience with selling or installing modern impact resistant roofing products.

Fortunately my wife and I can afford the out of pocket cost to upgrade beyond our insurance pay out. Plus if this happens every 3-5 years (which hail events do in the Black Hills) it doesn’t take long to recoup that investment considering I have a deductible of 1% of insured value.

Then there’s the fact that I hate contractors with the intensity of 1000 burning suns as I have yet to find any who show up on time, stay on budget, or do what they say they will do without holding their feet to the fire and their payment in my bank account not theirs. With that in mind anytime I can do work that will reduce my need to deal with those idiots in the future it is money well spent.

    Too many, but not enough....
Not to mention the fact that every single contractor, every single time, will say the last contractor who did the work didn't know what he was doing or did it wrong.

Yeah, that kind of moronic attitude is one of the many things I hate about contractors. Scum of the earth most of them.
