Redesign is to be completed in 2023 from what I've been reading. Very interested as a family car if the interior gets a refresh similar to the 2022 tundra.

    Anyone have information on this?

I’ve read they are pulling out all the stops and fitting it with 7 factory Tow hooks.

I have no info. It is due however. Hopefully they don’t ruin it and turn it into a glorified grocery getter.

They need to add power and reduce approach and departure angles if they want to remain relevant in the off-road world.

I wouldn't be disappointed if the 4.0 engine goes. As reliable as it is, but a solid turbo would do it justice, preferably one already tested in another platform for a few years. I hear the largest complaint that it feels sluggish.

As long as they update the engine this will be a winner.

I’m sure it will get the 3.5 Tacoma motor … they go down for the EPA . A EV 4runner might be pretty cool 1000 hp

No doubt it wont be as good as previous models, for the simple fact that it will not be made in Japan moving forward. That would be reason enough for me to get the current gen while its available.

Rumor has it that based on the successful sales of the TTV6 Tundra, Toyota is doubling down with a quad-turbo 4 cylinder motor for the 4Runner. Yup, that's right, individual turbos. 4 turbos, 4 intercoolers, 4 throttle bodies.

Whatchu talkin’ bout Willis? Don’t like the sound of it one bit. Our ‘11 is rock solid but might get upgraded to a ‘22 if confirmed.

I don't think they will. The one thing the 4Runner has had going for it was it is one of the few remaining body of frame midsized suvs left. Toyota already has the highlander and Rav4 for groceries.
I think the 3.5 Tacoma motor is going away. Everything I've heard in the new Tacoma will have a turbo engine so I don't think the new 4Runner will use the Tacoma engine when it's going away. I think they realized that engine was a failure and are going to let it fade away.

Since 2016 optics just looked like Toyota went backwards to please EPA with MPG , took away the 4.0 in 2016 , now the 5.7 from both Tundra and LC200 is gone , this will most likely be the last year for the 4.0 in the 4runner … good thing I just picked a 2022 Pro up .
Once we have all transitioned to EV the power consumption will be the big problem … your Toyota uses to much juice …LOL

I thought for sure there'd be something out by now but theres not been much of a peep. Not even any spy shots of test mules. I'm wondering if it's delayed.

I'm very interested in what they bring to the table. I loved my 16 but needed more towing so I moved to a tundra.

My fingers are crossed for capability and size of the 200 series cruisers with obviously better mpg. I'm fully expecting to be let down.

All reports indicate that the ‘runner and the taco will be based on the tundra platform, probably a bit narrower and shorter. Power will probably be a turbo 4 banger, but I’d love to see the Tundra SR spec motor offered.

They are not going to put it in Sequoia territory regarding size. We can all hope for a TTV6 once it’s sorted out.

Having a '14 4R since new, I think the 4.0 sluggishness is a result of the transmission tuning. The damn thing is always in the wrong gear (always too high a gear, I think in a vain effort to increase mpg) and constantly requires foot to the floor to get it to downshift and move. Going to "S" mode helps, but damn. Why couldn't they tune the 4.0/5spd to work as well in the 4R as the 5.7/6spd does in the Tundra? It would make it a helluva lot more enjoyable to drive.

Everything I've heard (all internet speculation) is a turbo 4 for the next 4R, which makes sense. The Tundra/Sequoia will get the turbo 6, and most turbo 4's today will easily match or beat the current 4.0 output. The Lexus GX might get a turbo 6, seeing as they currently still get the 4.6 v8.

We loved our 18 4runner. But it just didn't have any balls. Through the TTV6 in the 4R and it would unstoppable

We just got rid of our 2020 4R Pro, and it was primarily due to the 4.0L / 5 speed. The horrible Pro exhaust note didn’t help at all either.

Loved the looks, utility, and capability. Hated driving it over 20mph, and was even worse to drive when towing.

Would need a turbo V6 (roughly 100 more HP / TQ) in the next Gen for me to reconsider them.

did toyota ever have a trd supercharger option on the 4runner?

I really wanna get one before the redesign. A 4L V6 will last 100 years the way my wife drives.

Regardless of all this, my wife's looking at one. :p She currently has a 2020 Highlander, and while it has pep and all that....she finds it way the hell too confusing. Then again, she essentially uses her vehicle for hauling stuff and grocery getting and the like, so it's not like she needs the fastest vehicle.

The funny thing is that despite the way it 'feels' it's maybe 1/2 second slower than her current vehicle. In truth she's not looking @ one for 'power' - it's for reliability, ease of use (the dash is FAR cleaner than the current Highlander), etc. Plus, regardless of what they come out with next, you know they'll hold their worth.

Maybe I missed it or overlooked…. Has it been confirmed whether or not if the redesign 4Runner will be coming out of the Japan factory or not?

IDK if there was a TRD supercharger for it, but I know Magnusson has one for it just like the Tundra. I'm 80% sure it was developed with Toyota same as the Tundra's, but I can't swear to it. My brother put a SC on his 4Runner and says it woke it up nicely. He has a buddy that regeared as well, and the combo is the best the 4Runner can be.
