These lines makes it sound like Toyota doesn’t really care and they always intended to charge for it. Instead of giving buyers remote start from the fob, I bet like the article says all future vehicles will only remote start from the app. That way there is no blowback anymore.

If the article is true, Toyotas heart shrunk even more. They don’t want to give you remote start from the fob. They just want to fix it so no one else complains.

“Toyota now claims it never intended to market the key fob remote start as a real feature”

“a spokesperson told us the company was caught off guard by the blowback”

I believe Subaru already charges for app use after 2 years.

It gave a chart that explains how it was “accidentally” disabled and says they don’t know if they can fix it. I bet if data logging and tracking were accidentally disabled, they would be working 24 hours a day until it’s fixed.

If they can’t separate fob remote start from app remote start, they should eat it and just say they are giving everyone free app remote start. Then future vehicles won’t have fob remote start and no more surprised blowback.

A shame. Reading into the details of this, specifically the key fob being a user hack.... this line that I pulled from the article linked above... "Further, it claims that the key fob remote start function as it exists today (pressing the lock button three times) is more like an unofficial user hack that Toyota no longer advertises, hence the lack of a separate remote start button on the fob—and evidently its surprise at the blowback our initial report generated."

That reminded me that a friend recently bought a new Tacoma TRD pro, and I pulled up a video to help him figure out his remote start.
    https://youtu.be/-eZVO1kCyOk

The key fob video was posted by Toyota CANADA two years ago.
The remote connect video was posted by Toyota USA one year ago.

Guys, and Gals, it seems to me that you all have fell victim to the long con game. Two years ago Toyota released a video from their CANADIAN YT about the remote start via key fob, specifically choosing not to release from the USA account. "User hack" my ass... Toyota official video is not a user hack....

This is why I'll never own a Tundra newer than 2013. FFS...

    You fuckin zoinked em!

This shit pisses me off. It's sad that my first reaction was actually glad that Toyota even acknowledged the customer blowback exists. The standard response would be to just ignore complaints (since it's no big deal like I saw people say on this forum).

What's even sadder is seeing Toyota's response, trying to act innocent or pretend like they didn't mean it, but they meant it, but they're shocked! WTF Toyota really? I always expected less "Big-3" scummy energy from this company. Looks like things are changing.

    Pretty things
Yep. Toyota's response says it all.

They are either ass-covering pricks, or completely inept... I think we all know which.

    Anyway. MERRY CHRISTMAS to all!
