Looks like Toyota may be backtracking on the key fob remote start subscription.

So Toyota claims to not have knowledge that the three clicks would auto start and that the DCM may or may not be able to be flashed to return the feature?

suggest you post this in the larger connected services thread..

It just seemed like incredibly odd timing. Their app which we pay for on the wife's SUV hasn't worked properly for 6 months with Toyota saying they are "working on the issue". Every time to use anything you have to completely sign in as the face ID or whatever security measure stopped working yes, 6 months ago. When we called to get our money returned Toyota turned into AT&T where immediately nobody spoke english and wait times became insane. When Boeing crashed two of their new Max aircraft they didn't immediately raise the price.

Same issue here. I bought a new truck and hardly ever used the app remote start because I’d have to go through a full login every time. Re-assign phone number, get the email, reset the password… THEN do something. Wasn’t worth the trouble.

Exactly. It worked almost perfect for the first 18 months where you would only need to sign in once a month maybe. This last 6 months we don't bother except to check-in to see if its fixed. Nothing better in Phoenix on a 115 degree day at 4pm and I can just precool my car since its something I'm actually paying for............Sorry, no I can't.

Somebody please fill me in and correct me if I am wrong. As far as I can tell, the only "Remote Start" advertised or offered was a Toyota accessory, or through after market.

I never saw any remote start or anything on any window stickers or listed features on Toyotas site. Only way advertised by Toyota was to use the app?

Somebody found a "hack" or a "glitch". And found that if you click the lock button 3x it started your truck. There was a bunch of trucks that worked using this feature that no one knew it existed or was advertised by Toyota?

Aftermarket guys. Best thing I’ve installed so far. $60 a year subscription and can start my truck from anywhere as lon as you internet signal.

Pretty damn sad when greed rears it's ugly head up once again in a company that talks of customer loyalty.
Toyota has done wrong, got their hand caught in the cookie jar, and is lying about their hand in the jar while all can see the hand in the jar.
I know you are reading this, Toyota so here's your way out of this; apologize to your "customers", then fix it so the key fob car remote start always.
Yes, AT and T will loose some coin but, you know what? because of this they need to.
ATT, revise the app to do others things that Toyota customers could use regularly that are unique and above just remote start.
Let's go boys n girls. you are in the midsts of loosing a tremendous amount of respect and that means lost revenue / sales.
Show your American DNA by fixing it right, not rolling it into your lawyer offices that just cause you financial loss all the time one way or another.

Just so people know, there are some great plug and play starters out there for not a lot of money. Most if not all of them, will let the truck stay running when you unlock the doors. I had a Toyota starter on my 08 tundra, everytime you unlock to get your snow broom the truck shuts off. I hated that feature and have not gotten the Toyota starter on my next 3 tundras.
Toyota builds great running vehicles, but their electronics have always seemed a little bit flawed to me. And the last thing I would do is pay for something flawed.

Yes here is the Startx from Amazon

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VBHNBHS?ie=UTF8

You can also get the cellular module to start your truck from anywhere

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H9FLDCD?ie=UTF8

The install on these is very easy and its plug and play

In my opinion.. the remote start is just worthless. Unless you use the (cough, good luck) app and start the vehicle 10 minutes before getting to the truck, line of sight start is stupid. You get the seconds it takes to walk to the vehicle and then unlock, boom, shut off. Dumbest "upgrade" I have seen in my 40+ years of truck ownership.

In another thread on this topic, someone said that feature was advertised by Toyota Canada but not by Toyota USA.

Still the dumbest thing ever that Toyota vehicles shut off when you open the door. Because of this, I will not use the key fob or app, I really don’t care, if anything someday I will do an aftermarket kit.

100% agree thats why I have an aftermarket remote start with module that allows me to start my truck from any distance. On the really cold mornings I start it up while I am getting ready and have I nice warm truck when I am ready to leave.

I had it for free on another one of my vehicles (non Toyota) and after the novelty wore off after about a week I never used it again....I have noted some of the other car companies are staring to charge a subscription fee for everything, i.e. Apple Car play..... no thanks

I truly love the remote start feature. My ram was just 100% perfect with it, aim out the house window and it started for 15 minutes, open the door and it’s still running. Unlike many of you, I live in FL and it was for the AC. Tundra, kiss my a**s. I feel like I have to be 5" from the vehicle to use it, only to have it shut off 5 seconds later when I reach the vehicle.

Exactly. I had a compustar remote start on my 2014 tundra and it worked great. Wouldn’t shut off unless you pressed the break pedal down without putting the key in the ignition. even our 2022 CRV remote start just has you press the push button start once you get in before putting it in gear so it doesn’t shut off.

I can almost kind of understand a subscription to have an app on your phone to do all that. But to pay to be able to use a feature in the key fob that is available but behind a “paywall” is a little to far.

Well, when you reside in Cali it becomes a novelty. Living in Alaska where it gets -30°F, it’s a “must” in winter.

The dealer made a big deal about making sure we had the Toyota app on our phones. It was deleted before we got the truck home. My SR5 doesn't have the keyfob and we unsubscribed from all possible emails from Toyota. I may pull the DCM fuse and air gap that little devil and put it back in to see what happens after the DCM battery has a chance to drain. Wonder if I'll get any type of notification from the mothership or the fuse replaced when the next freebie oil change occurs? Not that I'm doing anything wrong in my driving style it's just a grownups game of hide and seek for me.

I never renewed connected services. So I don’t use the app. But I can still use the three click method.

put an aftermarket in the wife’s car. Can’t remember which one. But we pay a monthly fee to be able to start it from the app, fob would still work if we stopped paying. So exact same as the factory set up.

After reading your post/comment I decided to go outside and see if this actually works……and it surely does!

I pressed the “Lock” button 3Xs on the FOB and after two/three seconds the mirror/turn signal lights blinked a couple times and it started up!

I was quite pleased to say the least since I have No Intension of ever using the app.

My 3x key lock press + hold has always worked and was advertised to do so (in Alaska at least). I use the app a whole lot more though but my use case isn’t typical for most states. Being able to remote start from any distance is very nice…especially when it’s -30°F outside.

I believe that this works on all Toyota vehicles which support Apple Car Play, but since Toyota does not tell us that it exists in the advertising or manuals I can't say for sure. My 2019 has Entune, no Carlpay, and does not have factory remote start.

I had a lot of trouble getting the app to work for myself and my wife on her 2022 Sequoia, but after 3 frustrating days and 4 calls to Toyota (actually Sirius XM), I got it to work. I do use it to remote start the vehicle because the range on the fob is very limited. Use of the app is free for the first year and I doubt I will pay for it after the free period. If necessary I will install an aftermarket remote start with more range. I especially do not like that the vehicle shuts off when I unlock the door.

Ya even the salesman didn’t mention it when we were going over all the features. He only mentioned Remote Starting it with the App.

My window sticker says “Remote Connect” so if you have that feature then I’d think you can remote start it using the key FOB.
