Wait, my 2019 Platinum has remote start? Seriously did not even know, lol.

Our 2020 ES has 4 different subscriptions at $80/yr per subscription. Have only used the voice nav a few times.

I won't be paying for any of this stuff when the trial ends and won't miss it.

I didn't miss the point, you assumed I didn't care and that I was brainwashed and throwing my data around to get the next shiny object. Your response implied that I'm somehow a part of this problem, and you aren't. That's what I was responding to. If you're here reading my post, you've likely already agreed to give away much more data than Toyota/Google are going to get from your truck.

And I realize this conversation isn't simply about giving up the data, it's also about how remote start used to be a built-in thing that didn't require giving up your data to get. Toyota has decided to implement a system that requires sharing telemetry data with them. Like it or lump it, this is the direction everyone is heading. And back to point one...what you're giving up to get it pales in comparison to what you've already consented to give away.

I'm conflating the connected services capability in the truck with web services. You can still get in and drive around without using their connected services. Additionally, you can swap out the "connected" bits for non-connected ones that are 3rd party. In the same way that you can pay for an email service where you have more control over data collection and usage. Many folks on here don't like the original parts and swap them for others (although your old bumper didn't have a GPS module).

Or we could focus on disabling DCM so they can't get anything from our trucks.

Yeah you are not blowing this out of proportion, this is bullshit that you have to pay for a feature after a trial period. A feature you obviously paid for.

What features will you lose if you completely disconnect your shark fin antenna?
    Will it void warranty?

What features will be lost if DCM is disabled?
    Will it void warranty?

I have a 10 year remote connect trial but I only need the Fob for lock/unlock, and battery saver mode(turning fob off)...rest of the features are not something I care about.

Its pretty lame, I don't want to pull out my phone to start my vehicle. That's not convenient at all. Its a step backward if you ask me. Are they dealing with a chip issue? I heard GM isn't shipping anything with seat heaters and they'll retro them in later for customers, maybe something similar?

I don't think our opinions on this matter are so far apart.

I really have zero issue with paying for smartphone connectivity.

My issue is the manufacturer removing access to things that are part of the vehicle, and the fob, that you purchased.

Toyota is testing the water. It's not helpful if most customers shrug their shoulders about one function, remote start, being pulled from the fob they own. It's not helpful if most people accept they need to have an account to use the radio without the radio repeatedly reminding you that you don't have an account (Guest Mode).

People develop new devices and technologies that are a segue into subscription services. I'm fine with that.
I am not fine with the services model creeping into equipment that traditionally never had it, nor needed it.

As a few have shared, connected services didn't improve their vehicle ownership at all, and they let the trial subscription lapse.

Toyota isn't doing us any favors, they are testing the waters, or making little cuts to see how quickly they can implement more diverse ways to get increased revenue.

2022 isn't so bad. I can get a Fortin module for remote start, and hopefully I can disable "Guest Mode" and disconnect the antennas.
But, what about 2033? If we don't reject these little incursions, one day we'll be dealing with things that just seems like conspiracy tin foil hat talk.

Can you imagine, 10-15 years into the future you decide to buy your kid or grandkid their first car, something 5 years old, and it needs subscriptions to fully function?

What if the manufacturer says the tech is too old, and whatever services the car had (subscription to AWD, better throttle response, better turning radius) are going to be shut off? Permanently? OnStar had to shut down when 2G went away.

Not to derail, but if yall think this is bad (definitely not good). Do a deep dive into what Apple has given security wise to the Chinese government. Yall may be only using Samsung phones like me.

I’ve seen Auto Start/Stop and Heated/Cooled Seats both removed on the GMCs. And the window sticker shows $50, $75, or some other meaningless amount discounted to cover it.

I definitely see where you’re coming from. I can’t imagine that future because I don’t think any car company would be either that evil (or frankly able to pull it off). Maybe I’m wrong - My wife says I’m too optimistic and trusting, but I can’t help it.

I think Toyota paused production and hoarded chips for 2 months so they could go all-in on producing more new Tundra in 2022 than any year previously.
So I don't think Tundra will have some functions removed due to chip issues.

I used to work in the semiconductor industry, so I get news feeds, I saw several semiconductor publications noting that it appeared some manufacturers were hoarding chips several months ago.

Toyota may have felt this was the right time to pause, avoid content removal, and also introduce a new model.

As pessimistic as I am, I'd prefer your optimism to win over my pessimism, I'll take the"L" on that any day.

We may balk at these changes, but once we become the minority......

    IMO, the 2UZ
They're onto something. They're pumping out these new Tundras

I just read an article that said they cut production by 40% to everything except the new Tundra. They're all in on this bad boy

Full size trucks are ridiculously profitable, it's smart to focus on the Tundra at this time:

    https://theconversation.com/how-the-ford-f-150-became-king-of-cars-96255

According to Bloomberg, the average price of a full-size pickup truck is around $45,000, with a profit margin of roughly 25 percent; the average price of a mid-size sedan, on the other hand, is around $22,000 with a 10 percent profit margin

Yeah, this is a really troubling "feature" to me.
I bought a 2018 Tacoma (new). One of the neat features of the entune was that it had the Pandora app. Within 2 months they updated entune and took it away. Gone!
It really left a bad taste in my mouth that they'd remove functionality from a truck I purchased. Eventually decided the truck wasn't as comfortable as my old 03 Tundra (that I had sold about a year before) so I traded it for an 06 Tundra DC Limited with only 103k miles.
I love my old school truck.
I was really excited about the 3rd Gen Tundras but this service stuff is really troubling to me.

I owned a 2018 Tacoma (w/entune). Same deal. I had to login to entune to operate some of the radio features. The sucky thing about it was that it didn't stay logged in.
Who the hell wants to have to login to their app every time you get in your car to go somewhere?

Man I feel you on the Pandora issue. My wife's last car had a Pandora app in the infotainment. One day, gone. No explanation. The app button gone. I really like Pandora, and didn't like it disappearing.

I don't care what the "fine print" says, it makes ya salty when they take it!
