All the conversations about the break-in period spiked my curiosity to look at the owner's manual. For a baseline, I've always purchased my Toyota's as CPOs so I've never even considered a break-in period before. Here is what the manual says for the 2022. One interesting thing to note the recommended idle time before shutting down the motor due to the turbos. I had never considered that before. I mean...Toyota recommends letting the truck idle for 1 min after pretty much every single session of highway driving. That's quite a lot for a commuter like me.

Didn't notice the part about disabling the start/stop feature. Interesting that feature would be put on a truck if stopping the engine without and idle period could cause damage. Maybe the auto start/stop has a built-in minute delay?

I have a Fiat 124 Abarth with the turbo 1.4L engine that pumps coolant through the turbo for a few minutes after shutdown. Solves that problem.

Not sure I agree on the long trip advice. Took a new Camry with 3.5L V6 next day after purchase on 800-mile road trip. Was careful no hard acceleration or braking. Alternated speed up/down from 55-75MPH. Car performed flawlessly for the 5 years we owned it. Engine didn't use a drop of oil.........Transmission shifted flawlessly. Traded up to a Rav4 as wife had an affinity for having fixed objects hitting the car :)

1 minute is not that long at all think about it. You get off the highway. You are now driving easy off boost at a lower speed. Does it take you less then a minute to get to your house after coasting off the highway? There saying don’t run it really hard and immediately turn the truck off. Personally I can’t think of many times in my life I have done that. It takes half that time almost to just coast off the highway.

I was referring more to the "When the start & stop system is enabled, the engine will be stopped by the start & stop system when the vehicle is stopped" part. You're driving 60 on a street and come to a red light. Hopefully the system doesn't shut the engine off in under a minute while you're at the light. I guess that relates more to the turbo cooling than break-in.

EDIT: Saw info on the other thread about this. Will drink a beer and relax

I took ownership of my Tundra last Thursday and on Friday was on the road with the family to Disney World. About a 800 mile one-way trip for us. So far the Trundra is doing well. Utilized the Lane Keep Assist as much as possible. Not a Tesla, but pretty easy driving.

Bedding in brake shoes and tempering your discs properly is important for the longevity and performance of your braking components. The materials in your engine-transmission also will benefit from a proper “break in” period. Piston rings, pistons, the different metals and alloys in the transmission need to go through heat and cooling cycles to be properly tempered. This is my first turbo vehicle, but I’d imagine the same holds true for these components also. When a vehicle is new, you’re essentially doing a final fine fitting of all mechanical parts for the initial miles.

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
unpopular opinion: no such things as accidents. Yes there are “acts of nature” like a google crane collapsing on you while you sit at a red light in downtown seattle but most collisions with other people are due to negligence on someones part.

this is taught (in)directly in motorcycle classes where things are taken a little more seriously.

What a bunch of BS. Tempering discs properly, so they warp?

Well, it’s your $50, $60 or $70 thousand dollar vehicle… so break in or not break in however you want to I guess…. I’m planning on keeping this vehicle for many years, so I’ll do what I’ve learned from many past experiences by breaking in components properly.

Perhaps I'm just a very difficult person, because I'd be even nervous letting someone test drive my pickup before sale, thinking they might break it.:pout:

I understand completely. My orders were any pre delivery use kept to an absolute minimum and do not wash the truck prior to sale. It had almost 2 miles on the odo and still had the white protective plastic on it when they gave me the keys.
I bought a new SAAB 900 in 1987 from Mid Ohio in Columbus and they took a buffer to the car wearing through on a few high spots. Nice.
