Hi everyone. I wanted to share some thoughts on the new Tundra after a week of ownership. I picked up a Limited magnetic gray 4x2 last weekend. The stars aligned and I snatched it up. This is my first full size truck and first Toyota.

Love the way it drives. It’s big, but it is easy to maneuver (except for a parking garage situation over the weekend that was embarrassing) around town. I am a little surprised how bouncy the back end is on certain roads, but I know this is a full size truck thing, something to get used to. The engine is sweet. It’s fast, responsive, and sounds (fake but oh well) great. Transmission is smooth. I am only noticing shifts in first to second when I am not punching it linearly if that makes sense. Other than that, smooth.

So far at 350 miles with a mix of city and highway, the trip computer is showing 15.5 mpg. Hoping this will increase. I have been driving it pretty easily so surprised it’s that low.

Interior is fantastic. Love the Softex seats. Cooled seats are cold, but the fans are a little noisy. Heated seats are hot. The heated steering wheel is a disappointment, it’s warm at best. The soft touch materials on the dash are great, looks and feels premium. The glove box plastic is embarrassingly thin and cheap feeling. The pano sunroof is so cool. I opened the shade on the drive home from the dealership and haven’t closed it since. Makes the interior so bright and open.

Infotainment is amazing. Love the screen, love wireless CarPlay. Works every time and connects within ten seconds. All of the cameras have been hugely helpful learning how to park this beast.

Mine has the premium LED headlights and they are awesome. Auto high beams work perfectly as well.

Some minor gripes/things to address. First, the passenger side mirror will need to be replaced. The blind spot indicator only partially lights up, and the “objects are closer” text is way crooked. Didn’t notice it until a few days in.
    E385C08C-D042-4C81-BC36-CCF6848641B8.jpg

According the the Toyota website, the A pillars are supposed to be painted black. Mine is covered with a thick vinyl on both the A and B pillar. I noticed it because on the passenger side there is a slight bubble along the window seal. I’m disappointed these aren’t painted, but if they get scratched, they should be replaceable.

Some of the plastics inside are super cheap. The window switches are black, with no indicators on them. They light up with the headlights, but it’s odd they are not labeled or have some kind of indicator.

I wish I had gotten power running boards. I’m 6’3” and it’s a bit of a stretch to get out. My kids have to climb in. Oh well, they will be fine.

Just some initial thoughts so far. I really like the truck!

take one persons mileage with a grain of salt. Plenty of people have proven these trucks are capable of over EPA rated highway mileage. And fake engine noise is adjustable. And “bouncy” who knows what that means it is the guys first truck..

I think a lot of guys are showing why you don’t want to get one of the first trucks off the production line. I wonder how much of what you described is being resolved allready. Do you have a pic of the window sticker by any chance to see what your truck has?

Thanks, is there a way to turn off the auto folding mirrors? And can you fold them in while driving?

That text on the mirror, must have been done on a Friday. :drunk:

Also, I don't see the big deal about the window switched being labelled, it's pretty obvious which is which. Are any of them auto? On my LC all are auto up and down which is awesome but not the end of the world.

    Thanks for the review.
I'm more impressed with your garage and that the truck fits in it..:thumbsup:

I keep telling myself I'm keeping the 2014 5 or more years.
But I'm liking these new ones..
I just need to keep in mind it's nice not having a payment.

Someone will correct me because I can't recall if they do this on every single model of the 3rd gen but on at least some they augment the engine noise with recorded engine noise transmitted via the audio equipment. I guess so it doesn't sound terribly bad compared to the old V8.

I've heard/read that some folks are feeling like there is less head room for the driver. Do you feel like your head is too close to the roof? I'm 6'2 so if you don't feel cramped I'm sure I'll be fine.

So just in case people are wondering, this is a great way to get the boot from this site. If you are so small minded, not smart enough to debate someone and feel the need to stoop to this level…

Say goodbye. Not sure WTF is going on in the 3rd Gen section lately. This is supposed to be the grown up site.

I will agree with this. The rear end (unloaded) is much bouncier with the new coil springs vs traditional leaf springs. It was a little surprising to me at first because I thought, for a brief period until I hauled some stuff in the bed, that my rear tires were really off balance or something. I might actually look at upgrading to some stiffer shocks for the rear end one day.

You know...I thought my text was crooked too until I noticed they leveled it with the ground, not the bottom of the mirror trim. I can't tell if yours is the same way from your pic. At first glance, mine looks crooked if you compare the text to the bottom of the mirror (since it slants upward) but it's actually level with the ground.

I guess it's a personal preference what you want your level "reference point" to be: mirror or ground. Once I realized that, it stopped bothering me. [Shrugs]

Thanks for the review and detail. I'm waiting for someone to pull the vinyl off the a pillar of their truck so I can see how it looks without the blackout on there.

The text in the passenger’s side mirror is supposed to be level with the ground. Not with the bottom of the mirror.
If I recall, all of the windows are auto up/down and it’s obvious which button works each window so you won’t find any labels.
Same way it is with my 2012 Tacoma. Only my driver’s window is auto up/down so it’s the only one with a label. It says Auto.
    Hope that helps.

Seems to be standard with recorded engine Noise or similar option. Ford on the Mustang 5.0 V8's run a sound tube from the Air induction into the passenger compartment. Not needed and don't know why they did this. Dang motor from factory has a 7200RPM redline, short Tube headers into a dual exhaust. It was a PIA to remove and cap.

Someone will figure out how to delete or shut off the recorded engine noise

That's what I was thinking. Either way, would bring it back and have them remove it in case any damages.
