Starting to see this a lot at work. Mechanics are reduced to oil changes and basic stuff, any actual engine works requires $1500 one way tows to Cat/Freightliner/International for "warranty" work

90% Rams where I live in Wyoming. They won’t be seen in a Toyota

To be fair, the Rams do have super nice interiors and ride.... (Except for that silly turn knob transmission)

A couple of thoughts come to mind on the OP topic that tie back to myt1's reply. In rural America, Toyota dealerships are few and far between. If you're a farmer/rancher, are you going to buy a vehicle in which you have to travel a few hours to get service if something breaks? I imagine the cost of setting up dealerships in areas more likely to sell 3/4 and 1 ton trucks is a large piece of the puzzle.

As to myT1's observation, that makes sense. Toyota generally sells to more suburban customers (due to dealer locations). They have to travel a ways to get out of the city and onto some dirt/water. People in rural areas dominated by Ford/GM already live outside the city and don't have to go to designated parks to escape and enjoy nature. They already live with nature every day - they just walk out their back door.

Reading through this thread because, with my newly acquired Airstream, I will one day need to address the limited payload (and age) of my '07 Tundra.

I am not yet in a position to but a new truck.

I know the '22 Tundra has increased payload, but would rather not "just scrape by" payload wise.

Not a "big 3" guy, but in order of preference I would probably go Ford first.

Anyway, I've poked around the Ford website, and the F-350 would probably cost at least $60k as configured.

I also just discovered the Nissan Titan XD, looks like that one could be around $50k. That's quite a bit less.

Can anyone comment on quality of the big 3's HD trucks (I'm sure this is all buried somewhere over and over, please indulge me) as well as the Nissan?

How about drivability of an HD truck?

    SPP

Also, I know very little about diesel engines. What are the feeling of diesels

    I'll give you a short.

Airstreams don't weigh all that much, a Titan XD would be a fantastic choice and it would save you quite a bit of money. Also has the nicest interior on the full size market, of course the 22 tundra might give that segment a run for its money.

The Titan XD has a fantastic 5.6 liter V8 that puts out a great amount of power for its size. The truck rides well, drives well, and by all reports is fairly reliable.

Ford: watch out for seat belts lighting on fire. This is a reoccurring problem with Ford engineering and it's notable because it's not a problem anyone should be having. The 6.7 L powerstroke is a solid power plant but like all diesels it will have increase maintenance costs. As a counter, the 7.3 L gas V8 they offer is a rock solid power plant while it doesn't make the most power in the segment, it'll haul anything within its weight class just fine.

Dodge/Ram: The Cummins power plants are world-renowned for longevity and toughness however, they are not without their shortcomings. Overall, this is a solid diesel choice though. It will cost you. Ram trucks have fantastic interiors and tend to ride very well. Their gas V8 offerings AKA hemi also provide a lot of power, also provide a ton of maintenance expense.

Chevy/GM: lot of tricks in their books but a lot of quality control issues in the last few years. Their 6.2 L gas v8s are showing their age and are not holding up to use and abuse with recent iterations. Older trucks do just fine. The 6.6 L Duramax is a rock solid power plant and is used in much heavier vehicles than the Chevy trucks they power and by all accounts is a good engine.

At the end of the day, diesel in the United States is a little goofy because it cost more than gas, you have to run exhaust regen systems which are expensive to repair it are not all that reliable or you have to use a DEF system which robs you of power and reliability, they also tend to suck exhaust fluid when you're hauling.

The GMs are using a 6.6L V8 gas engine that's an updated version of the rock solid iron block 6.0 they were using for years.

GM also has IFS in their HDs, which resolves the death wobble the Ford Super Duties exhibit.

@slowpokepete unless you're working your truck hard every day, diesel is not the best choice. Modern diesels don't like to be daily driven short distances/with no load. Also, be aware that a diesel 2500 may not have much more payload than a gas 1500 (though the newest generation of heavy duty trucks seems to be better in this respect). I personally wouldn't buy a 2500 because a 3500 is generally about $2k more and far more capable but you may choose to test drive them back to back. A 3500 would theoretically have a slightly harsher ride unloaded but I don't know how much of a difference it would be vs a 2500.

Also, I'm surprised you found a Titan XD for that price. A lot of folks have reported that Nissan wants more for them than a domestic 3500.

Some local dealers have Titans and Titan XDs for between 46 and 56 grand which is far lower than a brand new 3500 for the most part. Of course it depends on where you're at in the country and keep in mind that Nissan don't control their dealers so if the dealership wants to throw on a market adjustment price or whatever that's up to them and it's nothing to do with Nissan. Same with Toyota and their pricing.

I honestly haven't looked at the XDs but when I was looking at the regular Titan, it was $60k CAD to get a truck with heated seats. That's approaching upper trim levels from the other 4 manufacturers and $15k more than I paid for my Tundra.

The 7.3 gas engine is the highest rated gas motor for the HD segment and the now 2 year old chevy 6.6 gasser is getting very good reviews (I personally love mine)

Right I could have worded that better. It's "underpowered" compared to it's diesel brethren, but it's probably my top pick for an HD engine.

I think people would buy a big truck in a Tundra. I have always thought Tundras should be rated 3/4s anywhos?? They could come in with a Cat, Cummings, Detroit. Heck fire!!! stick a 1271 in and hang on!!!! :)

    Or even a 1692!!!!! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9xY9kD5IylA

Oh I know, it’s kinda funny how Ram fanboys have no problem with an Italian pickup but so much of one with a Japanese-branded one.
