I searched but I couldn't find anything specific. Looking for recommendations on snow chains. I am running BFG KO2's and am 4WD but as most of you know sometimes chains are required. TBH I am originally from TX and haven't the faintest idea about snow chains. Anything I should look for or avoid?

Yeah I would rather stay home than use snow chains. And with all the weather apps at our fingertips, no reason to be caught surprised.

Growing up in MN decades ago, many used snow chains. Come summer you could tell those who did not know how to install them, installed the improperly or the wrong size, or went too fast or too long by all the damage on the sides of their trucks.

I get that and I'm all for avoiding dumb or potentially disastrous situations. I'm also for being prepared for as much as I can be. Have a trip planned to Breck this weekend and just wanted to be prepared if they put the chain law in to effect.

I would recommend cables.... I used chains and both sides snapped on my umpteenth trip over the Sierra mountain and it redecorated my wheel wells...

I have a pair of v-bar chains with cam tensioners that stay in my truck 6-7 months of the year. The cam tensioners make installation quick, easy, and damage free.

Haven’t used them on a maintained public road yet. Usually throw ‘em on a couple to three times a year when heading out hunting or sledding though.

What are you planning to do? If you want occasional security on icy/snowy roads cable chains will get you home. If you plan to get into the mountains and push your way through snow off road I’d suggest real heavy duty chains on all 4 wheels (not approved by your user manual). If you want something to throw in the back to get you rolling again after a little slip/n/slide there’s some less expensive options

Right now it's really more to just get through mountain passes if I get caught in something.

Just wanting to point out that there isn’t much clearance between the UCA and tire sidewall to run front chains on a stock Tundra. Maybe with wheel spacers or different offsets…

True. I always mount and tension my chains in the garage and check clearance before I need to use them on the road.
I’ve got v grip chains for all 4 (if needed) and they don’t hit the UCA’s.

    First off, welcome to Colorado.

Second, you really need to read up on the Colorado Chain Laws and how they effect you.

    https://www.codot.gov/travel/winter-driving/tractionlaw

Last but most importantly if you just need chains.....

    https://www.amazon.com/Chains-Emerg...t=&hvlocphy=1014471&hvtargid=pla-584307701949

We live in the same city. You don't need them.

I appreciate it. Admittedly, I've been here almost a decade now. I actually read the CDOT site just to refresh myself earlier tonight. I'm far less concerned about the Springs (not trying to sound arrogant) I'm more concerned when I'm out in the western parts of the state.

I wouldn't worry about COS either. Only time I have used chains:

-Blizzard conditions with 2.5' or more of snow and pulling people out or transporting.

-Off-road with a trailer in muddy conditions.

Guess it just depends on where you live in COS...:D

    Too many, but not enough....
Cables are definitely the way to go. Lighter and easier to put on and slightly less noise. In the mountains of california they are sometimes required if its a really bad storm. I have only used them a few times since I always have 4wd and snow rated tires (BFGs) but sometimes if you dont have them they wont let you proceed.

The chain law does not pertain to non commercial vehicles. Please be a good texan and research the laws. If you're not ready to drive in the mountains please don't learn on your way to Summit county on a weekend!!

Cables are the way to go, chains will rattle the fillings out of your teeth.

Or floss ‘n’ brush, and use V-bars when you need real traction. :p

Had the jewelry on again this past weekend up in the hills hunting down the perfect Christmas tree. Wife was crapping a brick or two climbing a couple hills on the way out. Would have shredded cables.

That said, for on-road traction help, cables probably are better. Never had the need myself.

I can say that at Les Schwab if you buy them but don't use them you can return after winter for full refund.

I’ve also never needed chains, been here eleven years. I do carry maxtrax. I’ve run trails with 1-2’ of snow while hunting and still didn’t need chains.

That being said, if you want them, go for it! Seems like a decent amount of knowledge about them here.

I have lived in Colorado all my life and I have never nor has any of my friends or family used chains. Maybe studded tires for the FWD vehicles in the winter months, but no chains. Maybe I have lived under a rock but I didn’t know there were snow chain laws for us… I know i70 has chain conditions for tractor trailers though.
