That may happen soon. I want to see that area, and I'd also like to make it up to Leavenworth this winter. I've heard it's pretty awesome!

Okay kids, your opinions are needed. My drink-induced (okay, drinks-induced) chat about bumpers and winches last week has me chasing my tail. Cost vs. weight vs. functionality are making it hard to pick a path. Give me your thoughts on:
    • Bumper vs hidden winch mount: The differences in cost, weight and functionality are clear enough. Do you have any “lessons learned” from either?
    • Recommend winches: there seem to be two “winch camps” online. There’s Team Warn and Team Cheap. I’m all for buy-once, cry once but this will not be a heavily used system. Any thoughts? Especially curious if you have experience with ComeUp winches.
This whole brain-fart started with wanting a way to mount a nice offroad light bar. I don’t like the behind-grill or hood scoop options, so that means a bumper. If I’m doing a bumper, I might as well add the winch. Now I’m lost in options…

Not a specific answer to your questions but my vote is the semi-hidden idea. This saves money compared to the bumper so you can invest in the better winch. You save weight and since you said the winch will not be used often that makes me think that you also do not need a full bumper for protection.

I love the new bumper I chose (you can see it in my picture). The look, functionality, durability, and cost are all great. The only lesson learned, which I still need to fix, is that Hooke Road advertises it as a full width bumper, however when you mount a winch on the included winch plate the bumper stops well short of the fender well, exposing the OE plastic bumper bracket. I believe this can be fixed by relocating the control box, allowing the bumper to be pushed further back, covering the bracket. I paid $679.99 with free shipping and received the bumper, bull nose bars, shackles, 4 LED lights pre-mounted, winch plate, and "skid plate".

As for winches: I have lots of experience with them. I have a Warn on my Rubicon, and went with a Smittybilt Gen 2 XRC 9500 on the Tundra. My previous 2 jeeps both had Smittybilt winches as well. I've never had any problems with any of the winches. I have done some pretty hardcore off-roading, and all of the winches have always gotten me out of whatever situation I was in. The brand new one on the Tundra hasn't been tested offroad yet, but I did use it to move a large tree that fell on the back of my property to make cutting it up easier. The tree was about 75 ft tall, and the winch didn't strain at all. So, honestly speaking, I'm not convinced the extra $1000 for the Warn is needed, considering my past experiences with the Smittybilts.

Struggling with the same questions for when I finally pull the trigger. I like the weight savings and less obtrusive look of the hidden/hybrid options, but also like the armor and look of some of the full replacements.
Biggest issue I have is I want rear armor but also want to retain my BSM

Blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert (RCTA) @RainMan_PNW wired it up on his Pro even though it was not an option.

The southern style offroad is the in between. Gives you some added protection for the center of the bumper but not nearly as heavy as a full bumper.

Okay, I read all the replies above. All good thoughts. I'm normally on my phone when I'm surfing here, but went to the laptop for a more thorough response.
    • There are a few light bars on the market. Not sure I've looked at the N-Fab specifically, but I've never liked how exposed they are. Especially if it makes it easy to steal. And the mounting solution (cutting into the bumper) seems ghetto to me.
    • A new bumper would be ideal for the added protection (and looks), a better solution for mounting lights and ideally add a bit of more ground clearance. I'm expecting I'll be heading into the hills 2-4 times a year with my buddy, but just exploring trails. I don't like the weight...a bumper is about 120lbs on average, plus another 70-80 for the winch. The OEM bumper seems to weigh around 50lbs, so that doesn't offset much. It's still a lot of weight bouncing on the front suspension. Especially since I'm already near my axle limits when loaded up for camping...and I want sliders which brings another 100-150lbs or so into the equation.
    • Bumpers and hidden/semi-hidden systems are all a mess of sizes, shapes, capabilities and prices. Long story short, I find myself wanting a made/welded in America design. They all have the top "baja" bar that I love the look of, but no one seems to care about the collision warning/cruise control sensor in our newer rigs. Some are removable/optional, but it would be nice if they'd design it around this sensor.
    • My Pro has the color-matched front and rear bumpers. So going with a front bumper system will change the side profile from green at both corners to black at one and green at the other. A rear bumper would be nice, but that's more weight (which I really don't have capacity for in the rear) and more cost. I'm pretty sure my Rainman tendencies for balance can be managed with this different, but not sure. And not all shops offer front and rear solutions.
If I go with a bumper system, right now I'm leaning towards the MetalTech design. It isn't as nice looking as most, but the baja bar is removable, the light options are great (the bar is secure inside for added protection), the new fog lights are ready to plug into the Toyota harness and it's made local. Oh, and in stock in sales-tax free Oregon. The Ironman design is what I like the best, but it's made in China and requires a wire harness that still needs splicing to tie the fog lights into the stock harness. I've looked at a ton of other shops, but they're 3-6 months out in production and I'd then have to deal with finishing the bumper after it arrives.

I haven't selected a hidden/semi-hidden solution yet. The Warn system looks great, but I doubt it is made in the US and although I know will fit Warn winches easily, then adds the additional cost of those units. Need to research a few shops to maybe narrow down a few finalists. This type of system would look the best, save about about 100lbs and maybe $500ish if I buy good off-road lights.

    We. Shall. See...

Same predicament. However I am a year or two before making that decision. Maybe longer. I will want bumpers done before upping my tire size for sure. I've decided I want full front and rear bumpers. But do I want plug and play or do some :sawzall: and increase my angles, get rid of the hitch or keep? Time will tell I guess.

Sorry - had to actually go do work.
Yes, BSM is the Blind Spot Monitor system. It's not available from the factory on the TRD Pro, but I was able to figure out how to make it work using factory parts (along with my aftermarket tow mirrors) and adding some missing wiring under the vehicle.

The SSO Hybrid is definitely on my short list.
    https://www.southernstyleoffroad.com/product/2014-tundra-slimline-hybrid-custom-2/

One of the local dealers last year outfit three different TRD Pros (one white, one black, one green) with this bumper and the Warn winch, and I got a chance to look at it up close. It was well built and the bull bar works with the TSS radar unit. Obviously less protection than a full bumper, but a lot less weight and more "stealth" look.

The CBI Covert is also nice, but I don't like the look of their bull bar design

    Parts needed were:
    • Two radar units (used off ebay), along with M6 flange nuts (hardware store)
    • radar unit mounting brackets (Toyota factory new) with more M6 flange nuts (hardware store)
    • Buzzer for driver's side C-pillar for RCTA warning (Toyota factory new)
    • Side mirrors with BSM signals (I was already getting Boost Auto tow mirrors) - a guy could also wire LEDs into the sail panels in the doors instead
    • Assorted connectors and terminals/sealing plugs for connecting to the radar units, and re-working some of the wiring under the truck (Corsa Technic and a few other online sources)
    • Wire to make up a harness in the bumper
    • Wire to make up another harness to get from the bumper to the passenger side engine bay junction box
Everything inside the cab was pre-wired. The main wiring harness under the truck was missing some key wires and the bumper wiring harness was as well.

I like the SSO. The Victory 4x4 version too. So many choices.

Guess a hidden+winch+light bar is going to be about 50-100lbs lighter than a full bumper setup and $500-$700 cheaper. So the question really is if the full cool-kid package is worth the cost.

I almost commented earlier on your post but then saw the BSM. Long story short I’m a fan of the Demello flat bumper. Pretty sure that won’t work for you.

But my neighbor has the victory bumper with warm winch and a bunch of lights. I’ll see if I can snap a pic of his truck here in a bit.

Also Warn is built here in Clackamas, Oregon. Though their site says some other stuff may be built in other countries(bumpers etc I’m not sure about).

Been busy as shit today at work, freezing my ass off.
My vote goes to the Victory or SSO. Unless you want the major protection of a full bumper, I like the streamline design of those while getting the benefits of a winch. I've never really liked a bull bar on a bumper but those are talking to me now.

Don’t know if you have made up your mind yet, but here’s my thoughts.
I’ve had both, and the main factor in this choice would be frequency of use. The hidden winch systems are a little harder to use quickly and take longer to respool cleanly. I rarely use my winch anymore so it’s just fine having the hidden set up. Back when I was rock crawling and off road camping I used it on most outings and a hidden system would have been a pain in the ass. Weight is a factor too. If adding an open winch bumper to the tundra, I would go with a super lightweight pipe bumper and avoid the big plated steel armor types. You easily could get a couple hundred lbs out there cantilevered in front of your wheels. Then you’ll get into front suspension mods to compensate. just some stuff to think about…

I’ve had my eye on the SSO. Great looking bumper.

All great info. Thanks everyone. Keep it coming if you have more to share. I am leaning more towards a hidden system right now. Just seems like the best overall solution.

SDHQ makes a nice unit that is mounted behind the bumper. Very stealth appearance and probably on the lower end of the weight penalty.

This is good stuff @gosolo. Defining how it will be used seems like the best first step. If I add a winch it is likely a seldom used item as I don’t seek out that terrain but I like the idea of having a winch in case the situation finds me. Hard to shake the “be prepared” part of being a Boy Scout.

It is the SDHQ hidden winch bumper that I have

NEVER let yourself question the wisdom of being prepared. There’s people out there that might sneer at you and call you a ‘prepper’. When TSHTF who do you think will be saving their ass?
