My tundra has 226k running 75w Ravenol in the transfer case, and I use 4wd quite a lot, it shifts quickly and effortlessly. And I live in the south where it's hot, like really hot.... hotter than this argument. I guarantee it'll go well past 500k on this brand and weight of oil, probably even last the life of the truck

So if we're talking long term, I believe I have alot of people here beat on 3rd gen mileage.

Ravenol is cheap, it works, and it has the coolest spout of any bottle I've ever used.

Use either the Toyota 75w or the Ravenol 75w at your choice. The manual states you can use equivalents for certain fluids listed. For the transmission and transfer case they don't. Not sure where people start talking about completely different weights being OK. Mindboggling. I use the Ravenol cause the spout is amazing for our transfer cases. BUT, and this is a huge BUT. The MOST important maintenance item with our transfer cases is to use them. Every month at least find a nice straight piece of road and switch 4WD on/off a few times. The biggest failure point we have is the actuator. If it gets used on a regular basis it no longer becomes a failure point. If you have not done this in a year you will immediately notice it having trouble going both in and especially out of 4WD. After you use it a few times it will get better. Just be aware that you don't want to be turning the wheel in 4WD on pavement. Again, slight adjustments are perfectly fine even though some will say cause they once heard that a friends sisters cousin babydaddy had his truck explode doing this. Not true. Completely can't happen. The best part about these forums is the never ending list of crap people say cause they once heard it from someone. I jumped off a cliff and didn't die therefore.......

was actually wondering the same question. Why can't i put the same fluid in the rear/front diff as the transfer case. I plan to run this in my 2019. is your fluid in your 2020 transfer case a friction modifier added as well?

    https://www.redlineoil.com/75w85-gl-5-gear-oil

or ill run this because i have both of these already at home. https://www.redlineoil.com/75w90-ns-gl-5-gear-oil

Sorry for the late reply. I don't believe the Amsoil 75W9 Severe Gear has a friction modifier added. Someone might know for certain, but I'll have to check and get back to you.

My (2021) owner's manual says equivalent gear oil is acceptable for the transfer case. And Ravenol says it's applicable, so that's good enough for me. I'm ordering from the Blauparts site, because it's cheaper than Amazon... See the pictures.

Thanks for the discussion. I received my cat plates from Valhalla's today, and decided I better change all the fluids first. FWIW I ordered the Red Line 50104 75W85 GL-5 Gear Oil for the differentials.

I would think that any fluid with the viscosity rating of 75W would be the same “thickness” since that rating of 75-weight is a resistance to flow measurement. I am not an engineer or chemist but I was taught in high school shop class many years ago that these ratings are measurements of ‘resistance to flow’ but most people refer to as thickness. So what I am confused about is how 75w is 4x thinner than 75w-90.

I purchased a 2014 with 203k miles and do not know the history therefor I did all fluids so I have a history starting from my purchase.
I decided to spend a few extra bucks and purchased the Revenol since I will not have to change it again anytime soon.

Glad I did! I found the drain and filler on the transfer case finger tight as well as the skid plate!

When I removed the filler I stuck my finger in and could not touch any oil! I then stuck a fluid extractor in there and could barely get anything!

I think it "may" have been half full?

I did not measure what came out of it because it would piss me off!

You guys talk about how fast your trucks go into 4x4 with different oils, I can safely say mine goes in to 4x4 much faster "WITH OIL IN IT"!

Fortunately the fluids were fine in everything else.

Just another good reason to do maintenance like this YOURSELF!

So true! Eventually I will have to hobble into the dealership waiting room, grab some "free" coffee, and read sales brochures until my vehicle is done...but that hopefully won't be happening anytime soon!
Plus I find it fun to do it all myself and then I know it's done right. Also you may discover other issues that needs addressed.

Not to grave dig an old thread but my buddy who is a Toyota Tech said they are not even using Toyota Fluids to do the Transfer Case and diffs. Said they are using Valvoline or Penzoil, which ever the dealer can get for less. 75w85 in all three!

Exactly the reason I do my own service. I’m sure they’re still charging Toyota oil prices.

If you want a real good laugh I can give you one. Because the rear end is a auto locking and not an actual limited slip diff and does not need the friction modifier. I actually use the same Red Line fluid 75w90 NS that I put in my Porsche is the same that I put in the tundra, in the front diff, rear diff, and transfer case

I ordered 75w90 Amsoil for the diffs, gonna snag some regular valvoline synthetic 75w85 for the T-case.

Call 3 different Toyota service or parts departments. They'll all give you a different answer for what to put in the diffs and transfer case. Call the people that made the diffs and transfer case anf theyll tell you something else.

I don't think it makes much difference other than mpgs.

Recently changed both diffs with Amsoil severe gear and did the TCase with Ravenol. Coolest thing to me was how easy the product packaging made squirting the oil into each fill port.

Since his signature says he owns a 21 Tundra I would hope without limited slip additive.

Just sent a screen shot of this to my cousin who worked as a Toyota dealer tech for decades. He said same thing: "unless customer requests expensive stuff, you don't get it. you'll pay extra for service to use it. we always just use whatever synthetic 75/85 is cheapest/available, same with bulk oil"

So if you want the Toyota 75W, either do it yourself or specifically request it. And if you can't see them do the oil change, ask for the empty containers. I put the Ravenol 75W in mine. About 1/4 the price of toyota's and haven't had any issues in a couple years/15k miles

The other guy who said something about getting Amsoil for the diffs has an 18, I also mentioned getting Amsoil and have the 21. I did not get the oil with the LS additive although I seem to remember reading somewhere that it wouldn't hurt anything but would be a waste. Anyhow, I just used the regular Amsoil Severe Gear.

I believe in the 2017 they started putting the auto limited slip diff in which is an open carrier but they use the ABS to attempt to make it a limited slip diff.
