Whatever this forum told me to do

    I had a '96 4Runner & gave my son the '15 i drove for 2 years.

    damn good vehicles.

the '96 NEVER broke or let me down (200k miles). '15 is flawless to date.

I reckon running a trans from 130-180 is ideal.

hey ALASKA, how do transmissions hold up in the cold & dark?

Is there anything specific or unique about that OBDII reader that would lead me to buying it over the one I have that is of basic price and quality?

I understood that the sensors were not installed on vehicles that didn't order the tow package from the factory. This is awesome. I have tried with another OBDII scanner and Torque Pro and could not receive ATF sensor data. I'll try Fusion Pro and the Toyota bundle. I don't tow often but am considering a long trip this summer with a camper and want to have data to decide on an aftermarket trans cooler. Many thanks, again.

Another somewhat similar data point, I had a 2021 RX350 loaner car for the past week. Hooked up OBDfusion to see its trans temps since they also use WS ATF.

Apparently they have an open (no-thermostat) cooling circuit for the ATF. I could not get the pan temps above 165F, granted it was below 50F ambient.

To my knowledge it shouldn't matter which reader you use. I went with the VeePeak due to its popularity on here and other forums. If you have a working one, I see no reason to switch.

Those sensors will be in every truck as they are used to determine shift points, TC lock-up, etc. Older trucks without the tow pacakge did not have the external cooler. I believe your 2015 will have a cooler that is integrated into the AC condenser. You should see better controlled temperatures than the factory 2019+ trucks. Chase makes a kit for the pre 2019 trucks to add an additional cooler.

I'm sure I have it dialed in now as I found readings for A/T Oil #1 and #2. A quick few laps around the block and I saw 155-161 consistently on both readouts. This is a huge help - many thanks.

so should we pin the thermostat open in the Tundra? 4Runner appears to like cold trans temps as does my 21 year old Lexus gs300....

I’m partial to leaving it pinned. Other models seems to do fine. I was curious if the 21 5th gen had similar trans temps as tundra.... looks like pman also found rx350 has cooler temps and not thermostat.

Ive towed (18ft center console boat) through the mountains with my 4runner. Longest trip was 5 hrs. Max temp was 190 on it and it was working hard to get there.

Tundra was designed to be thermostatically controlled so i unpinned mine to run as designed.

I'm curious as to what part of NY were you driving? Was it LI or Western NY? Flat terrain will not increase temps significantly. You need hills with climbs. Go drive in the Adirondack mountains and report back. You'll see a significant difference from your earlier observation.

My opinion is to pull the pin and let the thermostat do its designed job. Worked fine in the pre-2019 models.

It was all lower NY (not LI), north New Jersey, and southern NJ . In all honesty over the last two weeks I have done about 500 miles mostly in the Hudson Valley area of NY which is hilly. On the highway between 65 and 70 mph I had no trouble keeping the pan temps at 203 (honestly this seems like the sweet spot on my truck).

Another time I had to make two 1 hours trips each way near Bear Mountain in NY which is fairly slow and mountainous on consecutive days. On the first trip I saw the TC get as high as 225ish going about 40 to 60 mph for many miles in D and fairly steep grades (relatively speaking for the area). I would like to note that the temp at the TC drops very quick within seconds to be precise (once the grade ends).

On the second trip (2nd day) I used S4 on the slower hills and the TC temp stayed about 215ish.

My next comment is not to argue whether or not high temperatures at the TC are causing damage. BUT to say with MY truck, in home MY terrain, and under MY driving style the TC temps drop very quickly.

I really don’t want to argue with anyone, I am simply reporting what I am seeing.

5-10 minutes of driving gets me up to 130 with the thermostat pinned in mild las vegas weather. Once the transmission is fully warmed up, temps hover around 165-185. Super safe range.

That is about what I used to see in MA flats .
I drive conservatively and my pan usually stays exactly what you stated .
I drove up to Vermont from MA to get my new trailer and took highway 89 scenic and pretty much hilly and my pan was at 210 and that with converter locked most of the time with me and my little son in the truck and temps 55F .
If you are you not planning to tow or don’t use your truck for heavy hauling, you should be good without a cooler .
Reason I added mine is because I tow my travel trailer and don’t want to worry about temps even though never seen an issue towing ( my smaller trailer 4000lb ) for the last 2 years and always averaged 215 pan using s4 and tow/haul.

The most I will ever tow will honestly be about 4k. A couple of ATVs or eventually a side by side. I do plan on putting a ATV in the bed occasionally but I am a very conservative driver.

Too bad someone that repairs gauge clusters doesn’t have an option to add trans temp to the display

Nice. Appreciate the feedback. I'm very familiar with the area. Used to live up there. Some nice mild hills on the Palisades Pkwy south of Bear Mtn.. Did you continue up 9W over Storm King Mtn? That one will result in increased temperatures. Rt. 6 from Harriman going toward Bear Mtn is also a nice long climb. I've found it does not take much distance to watch the temperatures climb quickly.
I drive conservatively as well. You might be good in that region.

Yup that’s exactly how I went…right over Storm on 9W.

It was definitely a workout. I have been up Bear Mountain on the long hill but not since I installed the Scan gauge.

Glad you appreciate the data! I figured the more information the better.

It would have to be digital as the old needle style in the 07-13s was useless. By the time it starts to move up, it’s already too late and does the same thing as a light. If it’s digital, just get a scangauge or obd reader.

I assume you label them this way after you have determined which one is for the ATF Pan and which one is for the Torque Converter.

I just got my phone talking to my VeeSpeak and my VeeSpeak talking to my Tundra, I have the two ATF temp monitors on my dashboard but I don't know which one is which yet.

Does anybody know which "ATF #1 temp monitor"(pan or torque converter)is on the OBD Fusion app? I am gathering that the pan will be the lower of temperatures from reading this thread.

Can I simply re-label the display, or do I need to use user created PID like you show above to get them properly labelled.

    Thanks all.

The TC temp fluctuates more often than the Pan temp in stop and go traffic.

You can rename the display to whatever you want .
Pid 1 is the pan and 2 is the converter.
If you are not sure , after you stop , floor it and you will see one of them spiking and that would be your converter

    Appreciated
I changed the name by simply tapping on the name and editing
And yes, I can see what you are saying, the Pan temp moves slowly and the torque converter changes as it uses different gear.

Highest Pan Temp today was 199 and I was towing just a very light (aluminum 5x10)trailer, Outdoor temp is 45 F. Flat land.

I tow light equipment(mini excavator) once or twice a month and will be interested to get a reading when I am towing that in winter temps and in summer...and on some hills.

Love being able to monitor the temp.

    Thanks all

    No idea, never used airplay.
I have a very very cheap android phone and I am just happy to get the app to function to monitor Tundra workings.

They hold up awesome, when you let them get to a decent temperature. Never had an issue with one.

I have no experience in transmission development, testing, manufacturing, or servicing for Toyota.

However as the owner of a MY21, I’ve been concerned about the lack of a cooler affecting the longevity of my Tundra.
So this last week I thought I’d try to add some data to the mix. I got the veepeak wifi OBD2 reader, the OBD Fusion app, along with the Toyota Pack to go along with it.

Something I’ve noticed in a week of monitoring: AT pan temp and engine oil temp have never gone more than about 2*F apart. The screenshot below was from the other night. Truck was unloaded and in D. It was about 55*F. There were 40-60mph high winds. I had just done about 55 miles on the freeway at 75mph, and then drove about 10 miles of gravel roads while pulling some fallen trees from the road in 4WD. This was the hottest I’ve seen it yet -though this is winter in Canada.

From what I’ve read online, a thermal degradation estimate of 50k indicates a requirement for a full fluid change. I’m at 410 with ~10,600mi.
If I dare to do math in a public forum: 10600/410 = x/50000, then x= 1,292,682mi before thermal degradation estimate says oil needs to be completely swapped?

Don't worry the pan temp will get higher. In summer you will be seeing 215-230 at the pan under the same driving.

The index is a time-at-temperature and load (I believe) weighted calculation. I think temperature is weighted more than load.

For reference on my 21 4runner limited the thermal degradation estimate is 65 with 5500 miles on it. The trans temp at pan rarely goes above 195F.

Interesting. Have you noticed that engine oil temperature also stays within 2* of AT pan temp?
