So, call me crazy, but this weekend we were in Asheville. Whole trip anytime we were driving around 35mph or 70mph I could feel the buzzing. Then last day we are on a road where I used 4HI briefly. Everything seemed to work normal, and moved back to 2HI. Start driving … buzzing is about 95% gone.

Whole drive home last night - it was better smooth (compared to before). Now, I’m not sure if the buzzing is/was tied to the 4x4 system.

Bring it in and have the driver’s side CV axle support bearing in the differential checked. It will only make the noise in 2WD and goes away as soon as 4WD is selected.

    I knew I was setting myself up…

Thank you! I’ll have them take a look. Weird thing is it doesn’t make a noise; just a buzzing feeling in bottom portion of the steering wheel. Almost like a low voltage current running thru your hand.

You said stopped just revving engine that should eliminate everything but engine, meaning vibration dampener, torque converter as a possibility. I would go back to dealership or if you have a friend with similar trucks ask to sit in it and run it as you're doing with yours to compare, if the same would say you're good to go and know but if not the same you can depict the difference to dealership then get more serious about their making the repairs.

as a side note to the steering wheel "buzz". Many on here have referenced tire vibrations. On my 18 1794 it had a vibration at hwy speeds. Stock tires were fairly worn with only 22000 miles so dealer bought me a set of cheap 20" tires, same vibration. So I bought a set of Mich tires (my go-to brand), same situation. Got on FB marketplace and located a stock sedt of 18 trd with stock oem Mich tires and replaced the stock 20's. Butter. In addition the ride was noticeably nicer. havent looked back since. Sold the 20' as a set and been great for 10,000 miles. If you mhave 20's and a persistent problem, may well be the 20" wheels.

It’s not tires if it goes away in 4WD.

Looks like it is the front differential. New parts are on order and should arrive in a week.

I asked, "what makes you so sure?" They said, "we found metal shavings in the differential fluid." :eek2:

I don't get vibration when driving but if I move the steering wheel like turn it left or right I get this weird choppiness feel or static feel. It's smooth when turning but just moving slightly has some initial "crunch" to it. Hard to describe, prob not the same thing though huh?

That sucks. Make sure they order the driver’s side CV axle. When the bearing goes it messes up the axle.

I wish you better luck than I had.

Not what I've been experiencing. No change with turning.

Mine only changed with speed - felt around 35mph or 70mph. If I cycle between 2WD/4HI/4LO then back to 2WD it can make the buzzing better or worse; could never figure out a situation that guaranteed no buzz after coming out of 4HI.

2021 CM and ZERO ISSUES OR VIBRATIONS in the steering wheel. Why would it not be a wheel not in balance? Did you have them double checked or are you making an assumption? (not being a jerk, just asking) I run bigger tires on my rigs and have had weights come off at times which can cause significant feedback in the steering wheel when one of the front wheels has been compromised. Also, are you running a completely stock truck? I have heard of other things happening like the drive shaft bearing cover coming loose and causing noise and feedback in the steering wheel as well.

It's not a tire issue because it goes away when the truck is put into 4WD.

Front differential replacement seems to have fixed the issue. I’ve driven almost 100 miles and the steering wheel is butter smooth. Pretty amazing the difference, I guess it’s been rough through all speeds and I just never noticed.

Hopefully it stays good. There seems to be quite of few front diffs having to be replaced on relatively new Tundras.

Well … I wish I had good news. Went to take the truck for a drive on the beach. Put it into 4HI. As soon as I get to where there is deep sand I’m met with a ::clack clack clack:: sound anytime I apply power. It’s coming from the front of the truck. I turned off traction control thinking that it may be engaging. Still got the sound.

Any time while driving it felt like I didn’t have traction even though it said 4HI. Weirdly enough if I drove in reverse no sound and it felt like I had plenty of traction.

Any thoughts on what’s going on now?

Wow, it's like your following down the same path I took.

When I got my truck back I had to use 4X4 in a snow covered field and hear a clack type noise. It was worse when in 4x4 and in reverse with tires cranked all the way over. Turns out the dealer had forgot to install the front diff rubber mount. The diff would shift and the driveshaft yoke was banging on the cross member.

That's definitely an odd sound. Does if stop as soon as your out of 4WD?

Looks like your heading back to the dealer.

Yes. As soon as I’m out of 4WD or I get good traction on the rear wheels.

Well, dealership claims they can’t replicate the issue. They didn’t try driving in conditions that would tax the 4WD. So, looks like they want to send me on my way without fixing.

I’m going to try to dig in my heels and tell them to open a case with Toyota. I’m also considering having them lemon it if they are going to refuse even looking at any repair options.

I wonder if the actuator had gotten stuck midway between 4hi and 2hi. Perhaps that may have been causing the vibration and metal shavings. It's recommended that you use your 4 wheel drive system regularly to ensure the actuators in the front diff and the transfer case operate correctly and without sticking.

I was thinking the same thing, but dealership did not comment on it being an actuator issue. I’ve been following the manual guidelines to drive for 10miles per month with 4WD. It’s also a brand new truck, so I’d be surprised if it was a lack of usage at this point.

It's the driver's side CV axle support bearing inside the differential. As the bearing fails the material ends up in the diff fluid. The matting surface on the CV axles is likely damaged and will probably have to be replaced.

Well, they couldn’t replicate the issue. Dealership even opened a ticket with Toyota and had the Toyota tech review everything. They even drove 15miles away from the dealership to find some muddy/sandy roads and had no luck replicating the noise.

So, I’ll be getting the truck back with no resolution. My only guess is maybe after the front diff was replaced the actuator was a little sticky and somehow has freed up? Meh, seems sketch to me.

Next opportunity I have I’ll be on a beach again. And if it does it again I’ll push it till something falls out the bottom.
