I believe he is referencing the butt connections that have the solder and heat shrink built into one. They make for easy and clean wire connections.

How are these considered to be or not to be "Environmental" though?

    It's good
I had to look them up. What's wrong with solder and 3:1 shrink tubing with adhesive liner?

OK so these are just a butt splice covered with heat shrink with adhesive inside nothing more and nothing less so I guess now I really do not understand the question?

A lot of people boo and hiss at soldering in the automotive world, they say it can get brittle and from vibration break the solder joint and other failures…………. Sounds to be like they can’t solder…….

Agreed, a cold solder could do that. A good solder on the other hand with cable management - good luck breaking that.

There isnt really any downside either though to properly made butt connections it is just that most do not get the correct tool for the butts that they use that can give them a bad name.
I would always choose separate splice and shrink though no reason to crimp heat shrink that is good at all?

I use these a lot for connections in my car and especially in my boat. Water getting into a splice or any wiring for that matter is BAD NEWS. You could develop gremlins that you'll never get rid of. If I dont have environmental splices I'll use regular butt splices but wrap them in electrical tape and then coat them with liquid electrical tape; basically making them environmental.

This is what we use almost everyday at work. Not this exact brand but something similar. They work great and when shrunk they have a lot of holding power. If you have to redo you only lose about 1/2" of wire. We are butt splicing most 12 and 14 and 18 gauge wire. Most of it is exposed to the outside elements.
