Well, less than day of ownership and was just walking around the vehicle to familiarize myself with the "Toyota Way" and noticed the door jams were rather dirty. I started to poke at the read of the front vendor and found the rubber access panel at the bottom. I pulled it back and this is what I found.

    Tundra_compost.jpg

That was about 75% of what was in there (about two cups of compost) and I got a hose to wash out the rest. The passenger side was only about half as much.

It's going on my list of things to check when I do the oil change. YMMV.

    Thanks,
    Ron

Yup the leaves and crap get in easily thru top area where fender meets door and windshield. Plug it somehow? Fill foam?

Yes used, a 2016. So likely 5 years of accumulation. However it was pretty easy to clean out.

I have ~25 years of hobby wrenching experience with land rovers. If it had been a rover, access would behind a panel with 6-8 10mm fine thread bolts with integrated washers that traps water behind it to enable "british locktite", resulting in 30% bolts shearing or thread stripping. The toyota took 15 mins to clean out, no tools and I was done.

Also, I may have had to remove the hood on the rover too. It's tradition. I can't count how many times I've removed a LR hood. lol

Well you know what they say, if you want to get somewhere take a Land Rover. If you also want to get home take a Toyota :D

Actually the common wisdom is you just need two rovers since they create a mobile scrap yard. When you have a bad day, you can still get one functional vis cannibalizations.

I have discovered that same thing on my 2015. I have cleaned it out multiple times and it still somehow gets more in there.

It’s all the crud that falls down there from the cowl. Always a fun mess on any modern car when you need to pull a fender lol

I've always wondered where the leaves went!
How do I clean all that shit out, just remove the inner plastic fender?

Yea remove the inner fender liner and you can clean most of it out. Be warned, those clips are typically a one time use

This has been happening in some form or fashion on my Toyotas (and a Nissan Sentra I inherited via marriage many moons ago that showed me that an actual fire ant mound/nest can take root in those spaces) for 25 years. Add it to your Spring Cleaning list.

My wife, after we bought our 2000 4Runner in 2011, wanted a Land Rover. My exact words are

"If you want one, that's fine, but I WILL NOT cosign that loan." LOL

Don’t use spray foam! That stuff is known as DEATH FOAM in VW circles because they started using it in the 70’s to prevent moisture and exhaust gas getting through the bodies to the cabin. What the foam actually did was trap moisture and hold it, causing a phenomenal amount of rusting from the inside of the body outward. By the time you saw the paint bubbling on the outside it was too late.

I am just pulling the thin plastic liner back and using a vacuum with a narrow attachment to clean mine, and compressed air.
