Not sure about the CX specifically but the frameless ones look easy to break into to me.

My dealer would not even entertain the idea of selling me that model. He said they have had too many customer complaints about leaks. It was not just Tundra’s either.

Yeah, I watched a YouTube video on how easy it was to reach up under the bottom of it and pop the latch. I guess I need to get past how good it looks versus function. I appreciate the feedback and you are absolutely right.

Now that you mention it, I can see how these would leak since it wouldn’t ever be completely flush against our rounded tailgates. I am thinking I might need to go to a different dealer since none of these concerns were mentioned while getting a quote. Thanks for the heads up on this.

Leer 100XQ. Lucked out on timing, arrived about 5 1/2 weeks after I ordered it and another week and a half wait to get it installed. Not too bad considering the experience a lot of other folks are having.

I'm only 39 pages into this 47 page string so maybe someone had a better idea but I used to do this all the time. I had a roof rack so many times I would bungee the hatch to the rack. Other times, I would block the travel of the shock with a rubber gasket or a little clamp. I never had a problem with it and I went all over.

Genius. I never thought of something like that because I didn’t have a roof rack at the time, but now I do and hadn’t rethought it.
    That’s perfect - thanks!

I got my Leer 100XR ordered today. I was told five to six weeks. I can’t wait. This thread was extremely helpful and assisted me in my decision. Thanks fellow forum members. I will post pics when I get it. From a mid rise Leer, to a Diamondback and back to a cab height one. I’m indecisive. :goingcrazy:

Edit: Got a call from dealer who stated Leer does not install Windoors on double cab Tundras for the Leer 100XR. Dealer was on hold for 40 minutes trying to get an explanation but never got a response. I was told Leer’s customer service has gotten pretty bad here recently.

That’s too bad because I was really liking the Leer 100XR. Oh well, guess I will be getting the ARE CX Evolve instead. Sliding Windoors, two rope lights, flip down sliding front window, roof rails, keyless entry, frameless back glass and carpeted interior for same price I was quoted on the Leer. Just hope I don’t have same issues others have had with back glass and pieces not adhering correctly. Dealer assured me I wouldn’t. Fingers crossed.

    Looking good guys!

I have a 100R i had installed new when I purchased. I absolutely love it for all of the functionality it provides. Looking kinda granpa-ish with my steelies but i'm not upgrading rims and tires until these wear out.

Has anyone found a good seal to put between the cab and truck? I've used pool noodles to allow the rear window down and front cap window removed and cool the truck bed for my dogs but would like a more robust seal.

thanks bud! It was pretty easy, ran the power back from the dash switch and used a an Amazon LED adhesive strip light under the cargo rails.

I have one on order. Can't wait for it to get here. Ordered a 26" to 32" wedge DCU...It's gonna be a big circus tent of a cap on the back of the truck and I'm going to love it!.

I am sure you will love it too!
One of my favorite features is just how much more secure the DCU doors seem all around! The 3 point side door locks and 2 point French Doors if you got them are a lot more confidence inspiring to me than any Fiberglass shell with glass is and I have owned a few too!

Did you get the insides of the doors skinned too? The only down side for me is that the skin dents easily and stuff inside is always trying to poke through on me.

Also are you getting it color matched or one of the 3 standards?

Looking forward to seeing yours for sure!

Ordered it with the standard type lift hatch back door. Didn't get it skinned but will figure something out with that, may insulate it?. Have a few things to wire up and a few other mods I have planned for it so wanted it without the skin for those reasons. Ordered with the two windows on the side hatches and will try and find a slider window with a screen for the back windows on the side hatches. Only other options were carpeted roof, sliding front window, and a power lock on the back hatch only. Building a camper lite out of it. Got it in the standard black to save some money. I have an MGM colored Tundra so the black should match ok. Hopefully it will be here in the next four weeks or so. Will post pics.

I picked up my ARE MX just a few days ago. Like everyone else, I've been looking for about 2 months to not just one that fit, but to find one with the lift up side windows. I was getting quotes of $2.5 to $3.2k for a new cap and a 2-3 month wait time. I could stand the wait, but not the price, that was cutting into my racing budget pretty hard. During this time, I was hitting up CL and FB marketplace. Final found this one in GA, which unfortunately for me, was a 6 hr drive away. Spend the day driving there and back and I'm very happy with the find, other than the color. So, this MX has the flip up side windows, flip down front fixed glass and factory installed roof rails along with the Yakama bars. Upside is the seller had all of the keys and I was able to haggle the price down to $800.

Glad I found this thread, has some really great ideas, so I've stolen what works for me and will work on setting up the interior as I figure out my designs/needs. Only thing I need to do now is figure out the color I want to paint it. I had painted the front grill, but the color matched paint is a shade off since the red color of the truck has seen nothing but sun for most if it's life. I have a few months to contemplate what I want to do in regard to paint. I also need to seal up the bottom of the shell to the truck, seller didn't have anything a it never dawned on me to get some before I went on my trip to pick it up. That I'm going to fix ASAP along with some gorilla tape along the tailgate to keep the back window from rubbing the paint. I'll get a strip of 3M clear at some point for better protection on the tailgate.

There are different types and thickness ways to seal the top to the bed.
I have used both simple foam and dual bulb rubber gaskets and the rubber is for sure a better sealant and might also raise the edge enough to keep the back window from rubbing your bed too.

The foam quickly just compresses to the thickness of Kleenex in my experience h the rubber which is also more expensive will only crush so far and then stop making it just better in every way for sealing the cap.

Also as for color,is Red too obvious of a choice for some reason?

I have a few suggestions on ways to go about paint matching the canopy with out making it noticeable that it's a shade off.(cheapest option) you mentioned that you all ready did the grill and its slightly off get your self some "black painters tape" and run some along the meeting edge of the grill a see if the black trim brakes the color apart enough to blend both the shades to naked eye since both shades will no longer be touching. If it does you could follow the two tone scheme of the A.R.E overland canopy it would be the most cost effective method if your not opposed to the two tone look on the canopy. (medium cost option) have the Tundra color corrected "cleaned, cut, buffed" (optional) and if you wanted to at that point ceramic coated. this would bring your faded and worn paint back to near factory color making the paint match dam near close if not perfect. (higher cost option) this is more for normal body panels I really wouldn't recommend it for just a canopy due to the cons if the canopy was ever removed. But "panel blending" is were the painter will blend the new paint into the old a fade off keeping a hard transition line from showing witch forms a smoother hard to notice color transition. (the biggest con of it is if the canopy is removed you will then probably notice the fade in that leads to were it was) Red is also just a hard color in general to match.

just wanted to pitch some ideas to give food for thought or spark other ideas. :)

LOL, no, red is a serious possibility. My concern there is when I painted the front grill with some factory color match rattle can, it's a shade off. Yes, I could have it professionally done, but I'm trying to keep expenses down due to my limited track budget. I'm up in the air about what color to paint it but I have time and I'm not in a huge rush. Maybe I'll get lucky and find someone local to give me a hand with a refresh.... And thank you for the comment on the rubber gasket, that was my thinking as well. Reviewing some of the options on Amazon. ESI seems to make a decent product...

Thank you for the ideas. I've was looking at the overland and I like the break in the paint, so to your point, it would keep separation between the new and old paint. Still kicking around ideas, but I'm leaning towards this solution. I've even thought of a silver instead of black like the overland, something slightly different...

You could wrap it. Might take a bit to get around some of those tight corners but it could be done.

Last big purchase for the Bolo (I hope). Leer 180 cap; this may or may not make it possible for me to go to gun shows without a trailer. I'm not 100% sure if I can fit all the stock in it yet.

Looked for months for a used cap but finally gave up. Ordered it new from Red Apple Trailer Sales in (Let's Go) Brandon, VT. Allen and Anita, the owners, were absolutely great - very meticulous about their installation.

Of course, it got installed early in a Vermont winter, and they told me to NOT run it through a car wash for 3 months... that is NOT going to happen. Not with all the salt we put on our roads. If the paint fades early, well... better a faded cap than a rusted truck.
