    This poses some problems.
These guys are using some technology system (probably a water jet) and cutting these out of a piece of plate steel. Then they drill some holes, heat treat the whole thing and laminate the handles on each side.
I can not make a piece of Damascus that big and if I could, wasting that much under the handles would be like throwing away material for 4 or 5 good knives.
I probably could make a Damascus piece for the head and weld it to another piece for the handle. This could be done in a manner that would be very strong; picture that weld joint being like a couple short pronged forks that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle)
Still, it would not be as strong as what they are making.
    Give me your thoughts

Compared to something like this, what you are describing is much more robust - the use of any sort of full-length tang through the handle, even if welded to the head, would beat having just a wood handle. Perhaps if the portion of the tang leading up to the weld were long enough to at least have one of the handle rivets through it to add some more strength, but the reality is that a properly done weld is just as strong or stronger than the base metal.
    https://www.thevintagegentlemen.com...-tomahawk?variant=14183721074754&currency=USD

Now, the way you describe what they are doing leads to the question “why the fuck are they so expensive?!” Seriously, a piece of water jet cut steel, treated, and two handles epoxied and riveted to it just doesn’t seem to garner the sort of premium like a hand-forged Damascus Ray Taber blade…

Hmm. If I understand what your are saying, it sounds like a compromise. I’d never ask you to compromise on your art or the finished product. So maybe I/we just need to keep dreaming…

I should add that we weld pipe together all day long that can hold pressures over 1200 psi and when proving the weld coupons it is the base metal that fails. One thing you may consider is heat treating the entire a assembly after welding, and that might exceed the side of your equipment…but you might be able to outsource that one step of doing a “batch”

The piece of plate that they use is a single continuous piece all the way from the blade to the bottom of the handle. This steel is also one of the best knife steels available. It’s assembly is similar to a full tang knife. There’s virtually no hand crafting involved unless you pick the ‘tribal’ option with real wood. I am willing to bet that even the handle pieces are cut via a program fed into a machine.
Thank you for your support! I agree that they are ridiculously over priced, but they are targeting a ‘niche’ market…

For sure. They surely pay a premium for good knife steel, but it’s a sheet of certified material. And good CNC nesting will cut a LOT of them without too much waste.

I will look into this a bit more.
should I try this, I think I would source the same steel they used for the handle portion and increase the carbon in the Damascus head by going to 1095, which I have used in quite a few knives. I might try hammering out a piece big enough for the head just to see what happens, lol
