    Hi everyone,

My rear diff cover is leaking and I have to replace it. Just wondering if there’s anything I should know going into this. Gonna take a grinder to it then weld the new cover on, I don’t see any other better way to do it. I’m planning on replacing it with this:https://www.barnes4wd.com/Toyota-T1...ndra-Heavy-Duty-Differential-Cover_p_359.html

I read a post where somebody recommended against using synthetic fluid, does anyone know about this?

    Thanks

If you have a factory LSD synthetic fluid will cause chatter even with friction modifier. If you have a open diff you can run whatever you desire.

For the LSD diffs Lucas severe duty seems to be the best for our LSD clutches

As much as I hate dorman I would recommend their diff cover over the Barnes unit too. The Barnes is ok, but the dorman is factory shaped. The shape of the cover helps with the oiling of the ring gear and pinion. Diff temps likely will be higher which leads to more wear with the Barnes cover. The punch out on the factory and dorman ones guide the fluid to sling over the ring gear and in effect the pinion

Replaced the entire rear axle (swapped out the shafts as the the brakes were junk) about 8 years ago. Only extra parts needed were new u-bolts, some brake fluid, and POR-15 with paint.

There's lots of parts already out there so it may be easier that welding on a new cover.

Thanks for the input. Is this the cover you’re talking about?

None yet. Just good ole maintenance
Reactivating old thread ... while I consider going the replacement cover route my dilemma is this: Dorman seems to only have one cover product for the first gen Tundra, part No.926-958 and they list my vehicle as incomaptible (2002 SR5 Access Cab 4WD with LSD). and then there is the Barnes product B4W0008K, which Barnes says is correct. Dorman responded to my email and says their cover is not the correct fit and then others on this forum say the Barnes is a bad design for lubrication flow purposes. My gut says go Dorman and ignore their claim as inaccurate.

Has anyone used the Dorman on my vehicle (above) without issue? I can't imagine that its not a correct fit, but I just dont know enough about these rears to be sure.
