Everything you are saying is what my neighbor had said, and it's what we have planned so far, so that is reassuring. He used the glow in the dark fluid and tried to find the leak but couldn't, so we think it is a slow leak but part of the line set is behind dry wall so we didn't check there due to the fact we knew it was best to upgrade everything due to age and the old R22 freon. I'm not sure of the terminology but the existing R22 line is all straight hard pipe that is welded with a ton of joints. I went a new 14 seer R410 unit, a new coil, and a new line set that is flexible so it can be almost all one piece. We just haven't installed anything yet. Again, my neighbor is doing it, I will be the assistant, haha. I'm clueless with HVAC. He has the equipment to recycle the R22, gauges, scale, etc.

Sounds like you and your neighbor have a good plan. If he's got a tubing bender you can avoid a whole lot of fittings. The soft copper is bendable to a point without one. 14 seer isn't bad, but if you use it a lot and have a big house there are higher efficiency units available. But it bumps the price way up. The energy savings can take a long time to pay for the difference in up front cost. Good luck with your project and enjoy the new a.c. system!

New frost wall and pad are poured for the mud room addition giving us an attached garage. After thinking about my shed project I decided to go bigger because why not. So it's going to be 12'x16'. Except when I went to start on it I realized that the ground wasn't as level as I thought and I have a 20inch drop in elevation from one corner to the other. Time to rent a mini excavator.

Yep it's original to the 1997 house. No changes by any of the past owners, even paint is original.

20+ variable speed sounds expensive as well as expensive to repair. I haven't worked on any that high tech yet. 18 seer two stage are solid and reliable. Variable speed furnaces and air handlers are great. What brand are you going with? We sell Rheem equipment. Them and Trane are the best. But Rheem is less expensive for parts and more reliable. Lennox is ok, but seem to be a little more problematic and parts are expensive. Carrier is over priced junk. Goodman is cheap junk!

Working on a dry stack rock retaining wall. We need a little more space for the Jeep so I can get the tundra in and out and still open the door to my shed. A couple of hours in the morning and it'll be done!20170513_154209.jpg 20170513_154325.jpg

The problem with 410 is that it's a blended refrigerant, it's really volatile and it fractionizes easily. Meaning that the different components separate. If there's a leak and you loose a lot. It will loose more of one component causing the pressures to go all out of whack. Then we have to recover it and recharge with new. As far as that could be the charge being off. The 410 charge has to be spot on using sub cooling and super heat calculations. Your a.c. works by removing humidity.

My project last week was ripping out the craptastic hollow core builders doors that were "custom" fit.

Finding the doors framed out like this make me wanna Marty McFly back in time and kick somone in the uprights.

    IMG_1212.jpg

    IMG_1213.jpg
As you can see, that is some craftsmanship right there.

Then I went and purchased some solid core 6 panel unfinished doors. Stained, framed and trimmed out again.

When we built our house two years ago, we had to dig into a hill on site to fit the large foundation. It left some exposed dirt/roots that just weren't very aesthetically pleasing. Slope was far to steep to grow grass. It all holds together pretty will but we can some random falling dirt and pebbles - nothing concerning at all. The hill is made of shale and roots.

We decided to address the issues. When people visit, they all ask "are you going to do something about the hill?", so we knew it would be an issue when we list it for sale next year.

You can see the exposed crappy looking hill that we just hated staring at.

Just got the plumber in today to finish up the last little bit, been waiting on my cabinets and countertop to come in . Got a couple of touchups to do, but otherwise it's done. Took a little longer than expected due to having to take a break to run my fireworks tent and have a baby.

Of course the Tundra had to get in on the action

So my spring project of building a shed turned into a fall project..... and it grew from 10'x12' to 12'x16' but Here is what has been keeping me busy for the last few weeks. We needed a shed to get everything out of the garage so that the truck and wife's car don't spend another winter outside. We looked into buying a premade one and I found that what I wanted was going to be about 1/2 the cost to build, and would be built to a much higher quality. The shed is 12'x16' with 7' walls and about 14' at the peak. there is a 4 foot deep loft on both sides and is tall enough to stand up there. Its been tough to get much done with the days getting shorter, by the time I get home from work I only have about an hour and a half of daylight.

All said and done I spent about $3,200 and put about 5 full days of labor in by myself. I had a few times that the wife or a friend gave me a hand with things like the roof trusses and sheathing. But for the most part it was just me and my tools.

with the right tools and enough youtube videos you can build anything. (I'm not kidding this is the first complete structure I have built. I had some basic construction knowledge going in, but I got almost all of my info online.)

So here we go. 9 tons of 3/4 gravel to give me a 4" thick 16'x20' base.

The Tundra brings home 16 foot 6x6's for the skids and 12 foot 2x4's for the floor with the help of my bed extender.

The floor is built out of pressure treated 2x4's spaced 16 OC sitting on 16' 6x6's spaced 36 OC and then covered with 23/32" Advantech.

Framed up the walls with the rough openings for a 6ft door and 2 windows

Lofts and trusses went up. Trusses are 2x6 with 1/2in plywood gusset plates. I built a jig on the floor so that everything was identical.

Smartside and Zip sheathing for the walls and roof. (its starting to look like something!)

Of course a mini barn has to be red.

Windows go in and seams are taped.

    Doors are hung

and the last of the trim goes up. Trim is all PVC

And finally the shingles go on. Amazingly between the thickness of sheathing, trim, style of drip edge and 3/4" overhang I chose the roof was exactly 5 singles wide so there was zero waste from the shingles.

Just need to build the ramp this week to get the zero turn in and out and I will be ready for the snow to fly.

Also please don't judge my lawn by the area around the shed. We had just leveled the area out with a mini excavator. In the spring I will be re-seeding around it.
