Tundra-Safety or better gas mileage

Safety vs Gas mileage, my 2016 black tundra was hit driver side door by medium size sedan estimated to be going 65-70 mph, unfortunately the driver was critically injured, I simply got out of my truck passenger side door, side airbags deployed. Aluminum frame F150, truck would have rolled on impact and I would most likely have been severely injured. I drove the truck a mile back to my construction jobsite after cutting airbags away. The frame was slightly bent, firewall receiving damage automatically considered totaled. My new truck of course another TUNDRA!

Glad you made it out ok. You took a hell of a hit!!!

Just an FYI, the F-150 is aluminum body panels, not the frame.

Fords panels will crumple just by looking at them. That truck is crap. I have driven all the full size trucks. Rentals mostly. I have owned multiple brands and am a first time Tundra owner and I love my truck. What I don't like is the crappy mileage. I will prepare to duck here. My last two trucks were Silverados, a 07 ext cab and then a 11 crew cab. They were great trucks and the mileage was great. on average in city I would get 16, on the highway I would get 20. They achieve this by what they call active fuel management. It's where when you are at maintained highway speed, it shuts down 4 of the cylinders so the mileage goes up considerably. I looked at the Silverado in December when I was truck shopping and discovered that since 2014, they moved the front row forward about 4 inches. I am 6'5" and became uncomfortable to even sit in. The door frame that separates the front row from the second row pushes your shoulder forward if you have the seat all the way back like I have to. Any impact would bust your shoulder apart, not to mention just getting in and out. So for the sake of safety, I looked at all the trucks, Ford just didn't seem all that safe, Dodge was a joke, I didn't even look at Nissan considering all the problems a colleague has had with his Titan. I went and looked at the Tundra, the comfort of getting in and out was great. It was comfortable as well. Even thought it was 4-5k more expensive than the Silverado and the loss of 4-5 mpgs. I think it was the truck to go with and the rest as they say is history.

This is not the first time I've seen a Tundra sustain relatively minor damage compared to the other care and the Tundra driver walking away with a couple bruises while the other driver was seriously injured. Can't put a price on that. As far as gas mileage is concerned, if this truck is anything like my Tacoma which went 170,000 miles without ever seeing the shop, I can afford a lot of gas with the money saved by never making any repairs.

Yep, just google image search something like truck rear end collisions and you will see a bunch of F-150s that are totally destroyed. Glad you came out ok and got a new truck.

    Sending PM...

We all wish for better gas mileage, but I'm sure we would pick safety first for that "just in case" moment.

Man that's awesome!! Loving the blazing blue!

I'd much rather safety features than mpg. I've seen exactly how tundras can withstand damage and hits from other trucks/cars and come out just fine l, while the other vehicle is completely totaled.

As for mpg woes, the tundra's reliability and lack of time and money in the shop far outweighs the few mpg loss you take from any of the other big three lines.

Glad you are ok and awesome to know tundra can take a hell of a hit. That said...and I'm sure this goes without saying but I always remember it's a big truck and can cause a LOT of damage so I look at it as a huge responsibility and don't dick around while driving.

Just got back from a weekend trip to DC... They drive like lunatics up there but knowing I was in the Tundra, I felt safe... Just worried about damage!

Complaining about mpgs from a Tundra is like buying a prius and going on their forum to bitch about why it can't tow your trailer...

Can't put a price on the safety of your family but you can on mpg. So to me it's not even close. I have a Prius for driving locally (within 50 miles) and I know the driving habits. Beyond that, we drive the tank (Tundra)!

    Glad you are safe man!

I spun out doing about 40 back in October in my 2011 Tundra. I did a 180 and slammed a tree on the passenger side. All bags deployed, dash broke off, windshield shattered, bent frame and destroyed the body/frame mounts on that side.
I walked away with 3 cracked ribs and a very bruised ego.
2 weeks later - I had my new Tundra. There is no other truck in my opinion.

I'm glad you are OK and glad to read this. I bought my Tundra thinking that it would provide most safety when transporting my family - this helps confirm my decision.

I am yet to install side steps. Do you think your truck damage would have been worse if you did not have side steps?

I agree safety takes priority over MPG. When I had my Silverados, I had a hit from behind and the truck came out with extremely minor damage, it broke 1 bolt and knocked the bumper out of alignment. Actually I came out the worse for ware, my left knee ate the dash and caused a permanent injury. That said, I love my Tundra as well. Obviously I bought it. 8)

Literally, I could f*** up a cannonball in a cornfield, and I have owned more trucks than I would admit. 4 brand new Tundras, they have their flaws, but I have one for a very specific reason. I feel it is the safest way for my family and myself to travel anywhere in anything. I have truly tested a Tundra, and it did not disappoint.

Glad you were able to walk away. A HUGE tree fell on my neighbors parked Tundra. Totaled the Tundra but any occupants would've survived. I am amazed how tough these trucks are. It's part of the reason I've been driving 'em since '01.

There was a guy on here...cant remember his name but he in his Tundra was picked up and thrown in a tornado/huge gust of wind and he and passengers all survived. I think big semi trucks were thrown too and that tells ya how hard the storm was!
I need to get my wife a safer vehicle!

That impact does not look like anything near 65 to 70 mph impact. Was the impact perpendicular to your truck? Did it tuck all the way underneath your cab? The tundra cab does not get very good impact protection. Front overlap test shows that the cab crumpled and doesn't offer any cabin space protection. That test is done at 1/2 speed if not slower than the impact you are stating.

A smart car at 65mph would have destroyed your entire side door entering into your cab. I agree the truck is tough, but that kind of speed would have critically injured you if not fatal. I wouldn't want to give people false pretenses.

I'm afraid signalbobby is right. I am happy to see you are ok but a little research shows the tundra and most trucks don't safety test very well. I've seen a few tundras in low speed front end impacts and they get wrecked pretty badly, which is fine, it's soaking up the abuse instead of you and your family.

    https://youtu.be/_V5WGkRZQOU

Edit, trucks don't pass all tests with flying colors. The only thing tundra did bad in was partial front impact. It failed pretty miserably in my opinion.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
I agree, that looks like a 25-40MPH impact. However it can be difficult to determine, as every crash is different. If the car tucked under the truck and transferred most of the force into lifting the Tundra as it slid underneath, I can see that kind of damage at those speeds.

However these trucks are pretty sturdy, they have decent crash test ratings. The moderate overlap frontal collision is typically the worst. However one must consider that is into a wall (which does not move); therefore a decent amount of the force is going to be transferred to the other vehicle/lost by friction in a real collision.

I have a heavy duty Ranch hand bumper/brush guard to compensate for the frontal crash test. This thing is like a 6200 pound tank (with the accessories I added). My brother has rammed a guard rail made of heavy steel cable and wood telephone poles down and shattered the telephone poles. I was not too happy about this... for this is the reason I now have a Ranchand.

Glad to hear you are ok. When people say how bad the tundra MPG is, all I say is give that little rear your truck has and I'll get that fuel economy

I did a ton of homework when i got the tundra. I had the entire family with me when i rolled the tacoma and was lucky that we were all ok. unfortunately most front end collisions head are overlap, and the tundra does not fair well in it.

my father in law had a coworker die (unfortunately not from impact) when a moronic lady was not paying attention on a 2 way undivided highway and hit headon on a curve and was a 1/2way front overlap. she was driving an escalade or some sort. worker was driving a f450 work truck with box and trailer. The driver seat ended up being in the position where the rear seat was. Thats how far the entire chassis bent and impact was.

i just want people to have correct information and not think their truck/vehicle is impervious to harm.

A crash test into a solid wall is better than two vehicles colliding into each other.

50mph crash with a 6000lb truck is just that.

Qty.2 50mph 6000lb vehicles heading into each other is a 100mph collision with 12000lbs of energy coming at each other.

I would rather pick the former.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
Collisions are a very complicated physics problem. Generally two vehicles of the same weight colliding with one another at 50MPH is going to create an inelastic (asymmetric) impact for both vehicles, thus meaning that the "damage/deceleration" is going to be half that of the scenario with the vehicle hitting a wall at 100MPH. There was an episode on mythbusters explaining this and I had to write an essay on a similar topic for my Physics IV class (train collisions collide with one another vs trains collide with a mountain). The math works out like this:
    Vehicles colliding Kinetic energy(velocity is 50 MPH for both) transfer/dissipation = 2 x .5(m)(v)^2
    Vehicle colliding with an immovable object at 100MPH = 4 x .5(m)(v)^2

Some more info on the concept is here:
