The 2019 truck was purchased from a dealer in Aug’21 and just had it inspected + serviced by a Toyota dealership, in NJ, with no callouts mentioned.

However, I’m noticing “My Brakes Squeak In Reverse Only?” … and can’t understand why? ‍♂️

~ before I take to my local mechanic, I’m asking your thoughts / feedback to ensure I’m not overreacting

    thanks

My tundra does not do that, but my 4runner will. It is pretty common in autos. Generally it is due to sitting overnight or such, condensation/moisture occurs inducing some corrosion which gets rubbed off my the pads the first few brake applications. You are also going "against the grain" of the wear pattern the brakes are normally operated in-forward. So it happens, and honestly toyota is the only manufacturer I have owned where this happened with operational brakes in good order. On other cars it was a sign of pad wear or something else like uneven material transfer.

You can still check it out and see if there are any issues, but I am guessing no problems will be found.

I believe it's @Lil Steve that applied grease (?) to the area affected on the backing plate that squeals and eliminated it. The affected area is easy to recognize due to the lack of paint from where is has rubbed off.

Stupid question but isn’t the parking brake in the rear drums on the inside of the disc? I wonder if maybe that’s out of adjustment?

i used to get an annoying click out of my brake pads when I backed up but never squealing. Also now that I think about it I went to 280 thousand miles on the original set of rear brake discs.

Maybe it’s just gummed up and Rusty and stuff in there and you need to use your parking brake more often and that’ll make the noise go away?

My neighbors Ford does it, the tundra with drums does it, our 4runner with discs does it. I wouldn’t worry about it

Yes, that will work on our first gens since we have drum rear brakes, but the OP's truck is 4 wheel disc I believe. Not sure if the parking brake has a mini drum/shoe or a ratchet type caliper on newer gens.

OP, check for anything (like a small rock) lodged between the disc and backing plate/shield. If all good there spray down the discs with brake cleaner to make sure they're clean/grease free. If the squeal persists pull the calipers and pads to apply some brake lube/anti-seize to the back of the brake pads, particularly where it makes contact with the caliper/piston as well as the brake pins/slides with care not to get even a little bit of that brake lube on the discs. I know that last part isn't easy, I almost always wind up with anti-seize somewhere I didn't intend.

So I think it has something to do with the ebrake portion of the rear disk. I can’t remember exactly how it’s setup on our 4runner, I think it’s some sort of mini drum brake but even after doing complete brakes F&R the noise was still there. It doesn’t bother me enough to really dig deeper, and it’s a reality check to make sure I’m not on shutter island

Mini drum shoes almost never need replacing but it's possible the back side of the shoes are just barely touching enough to produce that squeal. Hopefully a little dab of brake lube will quiet things down for the OP without having to replace anything. Or turn the radio up! :D

The mini drum parking brake is known to be adjusted incorrectly from the factory - I've been meaning to check mine out and do the full adjustment, but haven't had the time yet.

This, I had to do it on my 05 4runner but so far the Tundy is okay.

2020 tundra has done it since new, every service I have done at Toyota they say brakes are all good. I’d like the techs that say this live next door do they’d hear it every morning when I back out.

It's OK. The squeaking noise lets people know you are backing up.

Normal but only on first back-up of the day. Later I can't get brakes to duplicate sound. New brakes as well and properly lubed.
