Can we discuss tires yet?

Not even out yet and I am fretting about tires.

The Tundra I'm after (SR-5 TRD Sport) has been seen with Bridgestone or Yokohama.

I once had Duellers and they were soft garbage that wore out in less than 20,000 miles.

Anyone know yet what the production Tundras will have?

I'll need a top quality all season that is very decent in snow.

OEM tires are usually sub par regardless of what brand. You'll get a goodyear duratrac or something, but if you take the stock ones and compare them to the same tire at a tire shop you'll see that OEM tires are usually a substandard tire.

Watch the first part of this video. It's about motorcycles, but the same stuff is done in the auto world.

    Great video, thanks.

I hear you on the Duratracs. My Trail Boss came with them. I was dismayed to find the OEM versions are NOT snow rated. I would have happily paid Chevrolet a few more bucks for the real deal.

It's just the nature of marketing. It's the art of legally lying as much as possible.

This is absolutely true. I operated a tire and auto store before working at a Toyota dealership. Check the tire wear index on a OE tire then compare it to the exact same tire that is sold to the public. Substantially less. This doesn't apply in every case. A vehicle manufacturer will ask a tire manufacture for a tire quote on tires at a certain price point and says they need 200K of them and they must meet a certain performance level. The tire manufacture will build the tire but some aspects of performance will suffer such as longevity.

The oem wildpeaks are gonna be P rated, which is basically a car tire. So once you put on a set of D or E rated tires,The oems probably weigh around 35 - 45 lbs. While the truck version will weigh
    55 - 70 lbs.

A P rated tire can be perfectly fine for the street and that how most will actually be using the truck. Off road or heavy towing the LT is a better choice.

The pinnacle of street all season tires….

And I have found them to handily out perform many of the most popular AT tires on the market while driving in the rain, snow (8’ or less), and ice.

The Defender LTX is better than the AT2 as far as daily on road driving. They do surprisingly well on dirt paths and minor off-roading (NOT IN MUD).

I agree. They are great in all conditions and the tread life is awesome too.

I wouldn't put to much weight on the fact that your Duratracs don't have the snow rating. It's really not that high of a bar to clear and it's more of a marketing gimmick. Your Duratracs will do just as well in the snow as any other Duratrac tire. As already mentioned it's for legal reasons.

Why am I not surprised that this is something that all manufacturers do to pass on the cost onto the consumer. Want premium dollars for a subpar product. They act like they are giving you a top of the line vehicle, yet put crap tires on it. Buy used and let someone else take the hit.

True, and the p tires will ride smoother and get better mpg, but they are more prone to flats if you use your truck for anything other than the street. If you drive a lot of gravel or dirt roads, it’s probably best to run an LT tire. Lt itirrs usually last longer too.

I believed everything you said other than that LT tires will last longer. If you're talking tread wear life tread compounds and tread pattern are the main main components that determine wear rate.

It your saying the the LT tire would last longer because you will destroy your P tires off road then I agree.

I've gotten very solid use out of Falken Wildpeaks and Nitto TerraGrapplers on my 4Runners. I rotate every 5000 miles and I get 80,000 miles out of them and I live in MN with ice/snow half the year.

Thanks to all for the great replies.

If my SR5 comes with Duellers I'll be heading to Costco afterwards to get the Defender LTX
