I've had a few PMs and requests to share how I painted my exhaust and tail pipes so thought I would create a DIY.

Disclaimer: As any DIY, this thread is not telling you how to do anything rather I am just sharing how I did it myself. If you attempt the mod and f*ck up something I am not responsible for anything.

As any paint job the most work is in the prep.

    Parts list:
    Beer
Very High Temp (VHT) Primer - VHT available at Autozone
VHT Header paint - VHT available at Autozone
    Lots of painters plastic
    Beer
    Tape / Painters Tape
    100, 150 and 200 grit sandpaper
    Cleaner/Degreaser
    Isopropyl alcohol
    More Beer

First I jacked up the rear and removed the rear tires. Then I cleaned the exhaust and tail pipes with a cleaner/degreaser. Using 150 grit I sanded the pipes down which helped loosen the remaining dirt, then I wiped down again with degreaser and isopropyl alcohol.

For the chrome tip I scuffed it with 100 grit then 150.

Then I began the protection of the truck. Used painters plastic to wrap the truck and added newspaper between the pipes and underside of the truck.

Taped off where I wanted the paint to stop (about halfway up when the tail pipe angles upward right before the spare tire).

Now the Primer. I added 4 light coats with about 15 mins between applications. Then sanded with 200 after 30 mins. 2 - 3 more coats and then 1 hour to dry

Lastly the black VHT. Followed same application as primer and sanded with 200 after a few coats. Then applied a few more light coats until I was happy.

Very nice, I like the detail in explanation. I kind of thought (Tucson guy) would have gone, behind rear end dump! I'm kidding. With the great weather there it should last you a good amount of time.

Only thing better than modding your truck is doing it with beers!! I covered most of the truck just to be safe and glad I did cause I found traces of overspray that had floated towards the front. Its a cheap extra step.

Thanks bud! I don't think I jacked up the truck as my lift gave me enough clearance to get under there. With your lift you should be able to just walk under there and paint lol

They are still hanging in my garage. :( Maybe within the next week or so I will install them if I can find the time.

I just went through all my pics and sadly I have failed to take any pics of them after I installed them. It has been about a year now and although they are dirty, they have held up well.

Haha, well thanks for posting some pics. Did you just undo them at the U bolt and they slide off? I looked underneath today, doesn’t look like much holding them on. I’d rather remove them and paint them versus mask everything underneath. Thoughts?
