i hadn't had a free weekend in a while so I kept going back and forth on whether I should (A) keep the flares off and fix the paint damage or (B) leave the damage and reinstall the flares over xpel or similar.

Finally bit the bullet and cleaned up the paint yesterday but it ended up being a little more involved than just some correction with the DA. With some of the scratches being as deep as they were, I ended up wet sanding to minimize their appearance and overall i think it came out pretty good.

It's definitely not something I'd recommend for those faint of heart as it's easy to burn through the clear if you use anything but a super light touch, but if you're patient it's surprising just how much paint damage you can fix with a little elbow grease.

Once I started there was no turning back:

    What have I done?!

    After compound and polish:

Still have to get to polishing the whole truck to get rid of the swirl marks left by the dealer but the fender flare damage was what was bugging me the most. Maybe I'll have some time this weekend to do that and apply a coat of sealant to the whole truck.

    Welcome neighbor! Nice looking Tundra!

I have never had an issue with my OEM flares. Paint swirls suck for sure.

The truck had the OEM flares when I bought it. With the stock wheels I prefer the look without the flares so I took them off. Even the OEM flares will get some dirt and debris under the rubber gasket at the paint line. No matter how well they're installed, there will be some relative motion between the fender flare and the body so the dirty will eventually scratch the paint. If you never take your flares off it won't be an issue.
