I was looking to install the larger overhead console from a 2nd gen that goes further back to the rear seats. Has anyone done this and is it even possible? It would add way more storage and even has another set of lights that face the back seats. Considering the 2nd and 3rd gen roofs are the same, I would think it would work...

Hmmm.... Seems a stretch. The slope of the roof would have to be identical between the two gens and if the mounting points do not line up, you'd have to find a way to "rig" it. It's entirely possible, but probably a lot of fabricating. Good luck! Post pics if you get it to work!

Check the build link in my signature.
The cab lines are the same as far as I know (the doors are the same except for the trim). Whether the mount points are there or not, not sure. For $70, probably not a bad experiment to try.

Please let us know if you do this. First mod I looked for in my 2018 truck was a larger overhead console. Never found anything.

This is a clever mod. Please let us know how you proceed.

I wonder if you could harvest the whole headliner and console from a wrecking yard gen 2...?

Alright, Gents. I finally got time to do this after finding a console from a wrecked one on one of my FB Tundra groups. The good news is that it indeed bolts right up! The mounting point for the longer console is still there under the headliner, you just have to order two of the screw-clip things from the dealer. Unfortunately, I can't find the paperwork that had the part number on it. If you tell them what you're looking for, they can find it.

    20210930_083544.jpg 20210930_083525.jpg

If your radio has Bluetooth, make sure to find a console from a truck that has it too. The circled parts are the mic's. The harness that connects to the console is the same thankfully, at least for my 2014, making it plug and play.

Once I had everything set to go, I traced the outline of the console about a half inch inside the perimeter on the headliner. It was a little nerve-racking cutting into the headliner, but I went slow and made sure it was straight.
    20210329_125517.jpg
    20210329_130929.jpg

If I could do it over again, I would have rounded the corners at the back, so you can kind of see them peeking out with it all bolted up. Oh well...

And here she is in all her glory! Well worth the effort to gain much needed additional storage, in my opinion. Why they removed it in the first place is beyond me. Probably to save a few bucks would be my first guess, just like the driver's side grab handle. If anyone has any questions, fire away!

This is freaking awesome! Definitely one of the things I missed when I went from my '08 to my '17. Thanks for the inspiration. I might have to add this.

    Edit: A couple of questions:
    1) Did you use any type of cutting device or just something like a box cutter?
    2) I couldn't tell but did you have the rear seat overhead lights? Does this require you to remove that?

You're welcome!! Yeah, it's a bummer that they remove things when they do updates, but I give them kudos for leaving everything in place to add them right back!!

    1) Yes, all I used was a sharp box cutter. Went through like buttah.
    2) I have a crew max with the rear lights. I didn't have to touch them because the console doesn't go far enough back to interfere. Hope that makes sense. For those with a DC, I'm guessing you'd have to find a console with the rear lights integrated into them.

Wow this is awesome! any chance you could send a pic with all the compartments open? I'd like to get a sense of what they could hold

Edit: Nevermind, I googled it. Thanks again. I just bought a doublecab version since it appears to be identical except it has the extra light toward the rear end.

Thanks for the quick reply and confirmation.

I just thought of another question. Since you cut into the headliner, have you noticed any additional road noise or higher cabin noise?

That's pretty ingenious. Looks like you could fab some Raptor style toggle switches up there replacing one of those compartments instead of the current thing folks are doing in the small cubby by the shifter.

I hate how our headliner and its trim isn't black. Such an easy thing they could of done to make this truck nicer.

Not at all! I moved the white foam looking stuff to the sides to make room for the console, so maybe that helped keep it sounding the same. But, I also have a Dirty Deeds exhaust system, so that could be covering any additional noise there may be.

Next question- is it possible PRIOR TO CUTTING to pull the headliner enough to see if the sheet metal is the same in 2018?

To be sure, my guess is that the sheet metal remains unchanged from ‘14-‘18, but I’d sure hate to cut that headliner away and see nothing but featureless roof!

This is such a cool mod. Thanks again.

^I think if you take out the rear map light, you should be able to pull down and feel around.

I just finished this on my double cab. It seems that the whole console unit is just a tad too short, as I've still got a gap (not from cutting) showing:

Other than that, a pretty easy job to do. If you have a double cab, there's a separate power wire for the rear light you can utilize. The wire harness that came with my console was one long one that harnessed into the plug in the front, but I couldn't use it as I had to swap over the bluetooth module from my original overhead console.
