Got a heck of a deal on my used 2016 in January of 2020- SR5, OR, convenience, sr5 upgrade packages, 32k miles for $31k. My truck also had tonneau cover, bedliner, nice step bars and remote start. At the time other similar trucks that I saw when shopping were running 34k to 40k+, depending.

I saw the truck, it was just traded (no pricing) and immediately thought it would be WAY out of my price range. But they had an amazing price and came down about another grand. Perfect timing, price and a great locally purchased and owned truck for me.

Jan 21 Toyota certified 19 CM OffRoad with 23k on it for 39k. That seemed fair.

I snagged my 2015 SR in Feb 2020 just before we knew how bad it was going to be with Covid for $17,500 with 40K on it!
Felt like I hit the Jackpot.
    Still do too!
4wd,5.7 and used as a lot car at a Toyota Store.
The only reason I think I got it was its a RCLB and I am the only guy that was shopping for exactly that!

This is exactly why I bought my truck a couple weeks ago. I had not had a truck in five years and realized I would never get a reliable V8 truck again if I kept waiting as prices keep going up and Toyota drops the 3UR-FE.

    I got my MGM crewmax 4x4 SR5 for $41,100+ttl.

What does the “historic” price of a used vehicle have to do with current or future prices ? It is exactly as the name implies HISTORY.

No one is going to take less for a vehicle because in the past they sold for less - and projecting how much a 2-3 year old model will sell for used in 2-3 years is apples and oranges as they will be different and the comparable new will be completely different (remember - late model used competes directly with new - so that is going to be a big factor in used values).

These aren’t stocks - there’s no “looking at the charts for guidance and what I paid on j 2018/19 vs what I would pay now are very different. Remember March-May 2020 was one of the LOWEST price periods in recent retail auto sales - so comparing a market bottom to a top is going to yield data that shows no resemblance to norms.

I have my GX which is a much better off-road platform but, I have anxieties about settling for a 2wd truck.

The OP asked and thats the point.

Maybe he just wants to feel worse about the price he will have to pay now?

I got lucky as hell. Bought my truck (for which MSRP was right around $48K or so - something like $48,400) for $41.7K in March 2020. Came with $200 in free credit towards parts plus a lifetime engine warranty.

Prices on Toyota trucks have always varied by region too. Here in the Pacific Northwest a 5 year old used Tundra with average miles wasn’t selling for much of a discount over new before the COVID insanity.

Smart move and killer deal. Any way you look at your decision, you come out ahead.

I feel the same way about the V8, 6 speed transmission, and 4.30 rear end in the Tundra. Driving that 6.2 AT4 with its 10 speed was eye opening. I also drove a 2019 Raptor for a couple days before the pandemic started, back when dealers had inventory. The twin turbo V6 and transmission were equally awful like the AT4, and the pumped in engine noise made it feel even worse. I really hope Toyota does it right, because nobody else has been able.

April 2021 bought a 2019 limited for 43k (24,000 ish miles), thought it was a dam good deal at the time. They gave me 4k for my 07 explorer.

I got mine (2018 SR5, 39k miles) for 30k in July of 2020. Came with a lift, 20 inch fuel wheels so not a bad price. Now the dealer I have it serviced at has been calling me seeing if I want to trade it in.

    Up about 25-30%.

Most of the used trucks advertised for $48k today could be had for about $34-$36k 18-24 months ago. Sort of depends on trims but that will probably be pretty close.

Tundras don’t seem to follow conventional market trends, where the old model depreciates more rapidly when the new model is released. The old tundras may appreciate even faster when the new one comes out since there will be no more V-8’s.

The strange pricing of used Tundras has been around since before COVID. I started looking in late 2019, and when I would call on a truck and make a low offer which was declined, I would call back a week later to see if the truck was still there and it would’ve gone up in price by three to $4000 with no changes to the truck. When I asked how they could justify that, they said we think we can get it. And then the truck would sell within the next few days. Finally got my 2020 DC TSS in August 20 at a decent price because they made a mistake in the ad.

I believe the reduced manufacturing that seems to be going on indefinitely due to Covid dynamics (Toyota plans on reducing production globally by 40%), the importation clusters, horrendous trade deficits, national economic debt ceiling raises and the demand ever increasing due to the article posted previously related to the flooding, it is not going to get any better for a long time if ever. No time like the present. Just make sure you move to the right District before the hunger games begin.
