Shouldn’t but that’s what fixed the issue and what was recommended by the dealer

I wouldn't say it fixed the issue.... it may have been their resolution. This engine is by no means a high performance engine and should work just fine on the 87 octane that is recommended. If it doesn't then that particular engine has issues. Now whether the dealer can fix those issues remains another matter.

Genuine inquiry: what is your definition of high performance? Power per displacement? Compression ratio?

Also...you mention it didn't do this last year. My suggestion is to run the higher octane for one full tank. Then blend back in regular 87.

If it goes away then it was a bad tank of fuel.

If not then the knock sensors are faulty.

It was Toyota policy to provide only FFV in many states in years prior to 2019. Those states/regions seemed to have substantial agri-business with easy access to ethanol. Your dealer would have had no choice in those years...Toyota simply wouldn't sell non-FFV in designated states. There was even some discussion about 2019/2020 policy here late last year, but I missed it.

Apparently, Toyota is not afraid to change policy. Toyota's Tundra FFV was/is a giant PITA with no benefit, only headaches. Toyota probably fixed the policy to cut down on warranty repair costs.

Don't honestly remember for the 2018's that they had in stock as I wasn't hunting for a truck at that time (had a 4Runner). I've never seen any E85 sold within 100 miles of my home location that I've been to. Of course I also wasn't looking at 4x4's when I first started looking - only got one after my 4x2 got taken out by a tree.

Here's another Toyota story. My old V6 Tacoma was even worse. She always pinged on regular gas. It turned out to be one of those rare motors that actually got much better economy on premium fuel. When gas was $4 and it was only 0.30 more for premium, it was cheaper to run it. When it would ping heavy on regular the computer would super retard timing and hold it retarded for hundreds of miles regardless of whether the pinging stopped with more expensive gas. It wasn't a little retard, at cruising speed on premium it would show 30-35 degrees btdc timing but on regular it would stay around 15 btdc. If I just kept premium in it, the truck would get an easy 2 mpg better.

In 2005, the first year on market, that V6 said '91 octane fuel recommended' in the manual. In 2006 it changed to '87 octane fuel required'. Absolutely nothing changed with the engine, programming, or the rest of the truck. It just didn't ping badly enough to wreck the motor on 87 and recommending premium gas is not a good selling point.

The Tundra pulls timing too, just not as freakishly much as the Taco. I usually see around a 5 degree difference at cruising speeds. Probably more under power but that would need datalogging

Was this noise worse under load?
