    Good evening,

I have a 2021 TRD Pro Tundra with 2,600 miles. The other morning when I started it I noticed some smoke coming from the passenger side exhaust. The smoke was bluish color and had burnt oil smell. It did not smoke for long just a few seconds and it lingered in the garage for a few more seconds. I got the truck new about 3 months ago and this is the first time this has happened. I watched during the cold start this morning and it was normal with no smoke. Wondering what everyone’s thoughts are or if anyone else has experienced this. This was not the normal condensation exhaust steam. It was smoke and only from passengers side of the dual exhaust. Stopped by the dealer yesterday and they were not much help. Just said to keep an it and that it was probably just condensation. Thoughts?

Blue exhaust smoke only at start-up can indicate worn piston seals or damaged or worn valve guides which may also cause a rattling noise.

Are you sure it was blue and not white? If it was just on one side one time I’d agree it was probably condensation. I’d also just keep an eye on it before tearing the engine apart looking for a problem that might not exist.

I guess it was bluish white smoke but it lingered in the air unlike the normal exhaust steam and it did not smell like normal exhaust. At 2,600 miles I can’t imagine anything being worn out. I would say it’s just getting broken in. Maybe this was a result of the breaking in process?? Or maybe just the “perfect storm” of events to cause a puff of smoke during startup.

Sorry. I meant to mention that there is no loss of oil in the dipstick, however, I did a break-in change at 1,500 miles so the oil only has about 1,100 miles on it.

I did that today when I started it but it did not smoke. I’ll keep doing it for a while. I’m wondering if this happens more often than people realize since single exhaust trucks exit on the passenger side.

I have single exhaust and occasionally get white smoke condensation and water will drip out from the exhaust pipe. Especially with wide swings of temperature from morning to night. Close to 90 today, tomorrow morning 55, Tuesday......43

Same here on my 2020 with 7500 miles in Denver. I found that last time it did a puff of white smoke I took a really short drive around the block for less than a minute and then pulled in the garage for a day or two. Think it’s related to the short trips so something to pay attention to next time you see it.

Short trips may definitely have something to do with it. When it happened to me I had towed my boat home from the ramp. Parked in the driveway for about an hour while I cleaned the boat. Started the truck, parked the trailer and pulled in the garage which could be considered a short trip I guess. Question is what is going on mechanically inside the engine to cause this?

My guess is condensation in a crankcase or in the exhaust so unless it happens every morning I suspect it could be básed on ambient temp and previous trip that may not allowed the engine to get to operating temp. I wonder if we could test it by taking a cold start and a quick drive then park overnight.

My truck has 24K miles and I too get the same blue/white smoke after short trips out of my passenger side exhaust only, it’s just condensation and nothing to worry about. You’ll be driving this thing for hundreds of thousands of miles. Best wishes!

I have seen it before on my truck, but not for about a year or so. When I was researching it some said possible the PCV valve, I bought a spare to be sure but I haven't noticed it happening at all since. I know this doesn't help much, but just monitor it and see, I was concerned about it but it seemed to stop happening so I kind of just let it be.

I would give it a nice lengthy blast on the highway (Italian tune-up). If you still get the smoke, definitely bring it in to the dealer. IMO, short trips and babying these engines too much can cause problems. Not telling you to beat on it, but some spirited driving does greater good then harm sometimes to keep it cleaned out. Good luck.

I guess we could try that. Now that I think about it, I do that same scenario often. Tow boat home, clean it while still hooked to truck. Start truck back up to park boat and put truck in garage. Why would condensation come out as smoke instead of steam?

The TRD dual exhaust have some kind of oil in them which takes time to be completely burned out. had the same issue when I installed the unit. I would not sweat it it finally goes away.

No worries the dealer advised me as I was concerned that something was wrong with the motor.
