    Hi...

My truck is my weekend vehicle and rugged camping truck vehicle. Not my daily driver. My 2006 Double Cab Long Bed Tacoma TRD Prerunner is feeling a little small for my family of four and large dog on long road trips and it's 2wd... So I am looking to build out a new 4x4 truck for remote/dispersed camping trips and long road trips when I want to haul the kayak. My tacoma was built this way (lift, softopper, roof rack) and I love the setup but not the downfalls. I envision some snow wheeling trips and trips to Utah desert backcountry where I am more confident with 4x4. with that said.. I am looking at this truck today:

    2005 Toyota Tundra Double Cab
Painted A Year Ago. (seafoam blue)
    New Shock Front and back.
    New rear axles and bearings.
New sway bar links and bushings.
    New steering rack.
    New Brakes.
    Drives Great.
    Sounds Great.
Scratch Free and no major dents.
    Clean Title.
Leather and Carpets in great shape.
Lifted a 2.5 in front and 3 in back.
    Flow Master dual Exhaust.
    All Terrain TKO tires.
    TRD.
    Soft topper canvas top.
    Tow Package.
Well Maintained - timing belt at 88k.
    148,000 Miles.
    Tan Leather Interior.
    4x4.
    Side Curtain Air Bags.

All maintenance up to date with records. Timing belt and pump did around 86k. Southern California its whole life.

    00K0K_nz1cCQlXXLz_0ak07K_1200x900.jpg

He's asking 16k. Only downfall is it's painted aqua blue. But I think that can grow on me. Lift was done properly with coils, new shocks, add a leaf and a block in the rear.

I am not in a rush but have been pondering this for awhile and looking at ads for a few months. Not much inventory available and the prices at dealerships are nuts.

Here is my current truck that's been with me for 6 years almost:

    PXL_20210909_234329769.MP (1).jpg

Thoughts? Wondering if this is a good transition or it'll feel too much like my Tacoma.

    Thanks for reading

Wow. 16k for aqua blue? I'd probably want the darkest tinted windows so others don't see me driving it.

It should give you the space you need. V8 or V6? It will definitely be a noticeable difference with the V8 and a happy one IMO.

Really? I wasn't aware they stopped offering the v6 option on the 05 and 06 models. Good to know.

Like that colour on some old antique vehicles but on that Tundra just not seeing it, not right. It looks like it's been cared for.

If you like it, get it. There are a bunch of people that don't like the colour of my truck. Do things that make you happy.

It's a crazy world trying to get so many things now. Amazing what a couple of years will do that are all fecked up.

Yeah I'm definitely not feeling the color. I think I'm trying to force myself to like it. I might just offer a little bit under, and get a quote for painting it a color that I've always wanted. Maybe a forest green or the Tacoma quicksand color

I know it 'was' kinda trendy a while back, but you could paint that a 'Satin' finish, like a medium gun-metal grey or something similar.
The thing with glossy paint jobs is you really gotta pay some serious $$$ for it to look good . . .perhaps a satin finish would look better 'overall' & hide some body imperfections? Just a thought.

Besides the color and this specific truck ... What are your guy's thoughts on my switch from a Tacoma to a 1st Gen Tundra based on my issues with the taco (lack of power, interior space, 2wd)

I think it would check all of your boxes in terms of what the Taco is lacking. If it's well cared for <150k miles is barely broken in. Work with him on the price. He's trying to recoup a 5k-8k paint job.

In terms of 'room' . . . total night and day difference. I had a 2003 Gen 1 Tundra access cab prior to my 2006 DC . . . and it was a world of difference, the backseat on the AC was useless for anyone over a toddlers age. The back seats on the DC are legit and adult worthy.
The bed of a DC (especially with a shell on it) will be like a giant cave compared to the tacoma.
While the 4.7 V8 isn't the most powerful motor, it'll serve you fine. Don't expect great mileage, they're pretty thirsty for their small displacement. I just ran out to Lake Mojave pulling a small 15 foot boston whaler . . . with 2 of us and all our gear, coolers, small generator, tackle, a bunch of camera gear etc. I got right at 16 MPG. Mines 2WD with a snug top cab-high shell, stock height, stock tire size. Another thing is the turning radius sucks on the DC's. . . I just go straight to the back of any parking lot now, and don't even attempt to deal with the upfront spots. I won't even attempt a few of the cramped drive-thru fast food places . . . be careful with that one.
All that being said . . . it's hands down the best truck I've ever had . . . the long wheel base makes for a really nice ride.

I’ve been looking at the color for a few minutes trying to decide if I could live with it. Do you know why they painted it?

Ultimately, it sounds like it’s a good truck - nice mileage and tasteful and useful mods/repairs. I loved my 2006 DC SR5 4x4. Really really fun truck, and it wasn’t in nearly as good of shape as this sea foam blue one. I think a Gen 1 Tundra would be a great choice for what you need, especially if you like your Taco and just want more room, power, 4x4. Seems like a natural fit.

Looks like a nice truck, well maybe look like is the wrong way to say this?

    The color.....I can not abide.

But we are all different and like different looks.

I do think you would be amazed at the upgrade in space, power and solid ride quality compared to the Taco though for sure,I cant even really ever get comfortable in a Taco yet I have driven all over the country in 1st Gen Tundras and would still any time!

Good clean maintenance record, and a SoCal truck sure ticks off the boxes. You will find the FGT hits the sweet spot; it's big and solid, yet somehow still nimble and not as cumbersome as a standard full sized pickup.

No V6 in doubles. 4.0 for access and reg cabs do exist. As do manuals with the v6

Everything sounds good. What kinda lift does it have?

the price is high and probably has to do with the paint job.

I don’t think I could live with that color personally. It’s a mod that adds no value IMO.

Thanks guys this is all amazing insight. Looks like you guys are as knowledgeable of a forum as the Tacoma world guys.

The limited slip in the TRD in the 05 and 06, is that mechanical or is it using brakes? Also, were side impact airbag standard on these years

I don't know about the limited slip being mechanical in 05/06. They were in 00-03 at least.

No side impact bags unfortunately, but you might get the option to turn off the passenger side airbag liked mine to deter some less than desireable people from seeking future rides with you.

I'm almost certain it's mechanical. I don't think the tag would read "lsd oil only" if it was an abs traction control deal.

Always one to take an unpopular opinion... I don't mind the color. Do black accents and black out the windows anyway and it would look cool.

Not gonna sell easily, you can get them down over 3 grand for that reason alone. Check for rust on that frame really well once it starts they go quickly.

Some 05/06 have a stability control brake thing that gets called limited slip too often. Could be either really.

When i saw that pic I thought it was a messed up filtered photo. That color reminds me of cotton candy for some reason and I hate cotton candy.

Not digging the retro color, maybe back in the 50's, some hipster kitchen... But not for a tundra.

I personally love the first gen tundra (and prefer it by miles over a taco, even the long bed), but if you're after more space and more power....it's definitely worth looking at an early 2nd gen crew max with the 5.7. Mileage is about the same, prices will be a smidge more (tho not a ton), but the power and cabin room is insane by comparison. Just some food for thought. Personally, I'd pass on the aqua truck. You're going to want a truck you can look back at and smile when you park it. There are plenty of other fish in the sea if you're not too eager/impatient.

I’ll be the minority here, that color with blacked out everything has potential, I’d drive it. But then again Mine has a monstaliner paint job, so take my opinion with a grain of salt

I went from a 2011 tx pro dc Taco to my 06 double cab. The tundra has tons more room, full size bed, metal bed, similar power down low to my 11. I will say my tundra gets leaps and bounds better fuel mileage than the taco did. That thing was awful on fuel. I mean hell my dually got better mileage than it did. The only way I’d go back to a taco is if I could 5.7 swap like tacundra
