This would sound unreal if I didn't have pictures to prove it. About a week ago I was driving back from a friends place up on California's beautiful Central Coast. I jumped on the 101 south and happened to get right in front of a police chase. I saw the police lights in my rearview but just thought they had someone pulled over behind me.

Then I realized they were gaining on me. Fast! At the very next exit after I got on, the Sheriff had the offramp blocked with 2 patrol cars and just as I was about to pass by they threw a spike strip in front of my truck!

Obviously they got the wrong guy, and the Sheriff's deputies were super professional about the whole thing and sooooo apologetic. They had the freeway shut down but somehow I managed to squirt onto the freeway at exactly the wrong place and time.

They managed to blow my 2 right tires. Had to get a tow to America's Tire where it took them a couple days to get the tires (no overnight delivery up where I was), so I had hotel, car rental and a bunch of other expenses I now need to get reimbursed for from the county of San Luis Obispo.

Crazy night. Just thought I'd share a crazy Tundra story.

    That's crazy!

Can you share more about the experience of going over the strip? How fast were you going? Did you have any loss of control? Was it a loud pop?

I learned the spikes are designed to break off the strip and embed into your tires and drain the air out like a straw (a bunch of straws). Fortunately I had larger tires (Falken Wildpeak) so they just went flat and I pulled over as soon as I felt it get wobbly and start crabwalking.

I was in shock at the time and had a full adrenaline dump on the side of the road with the cops there. It was kinda surreal.

Could have ended a lot differently.

Yeah lol. The 2 officers that spiked me actually had to bail on me and head up the road to the scene where they caught the guy. They had the watch commander come down and wait with me until the tow truck got there.

Just think if you pulled over once you saw the blue lights all would have been avoided.

Just think if law enforcement stopped the public from being in a situation where they should not be by blocking off roads.

Crazy story! Sorry you had to be the unfortunate victim of it. Would've been a great time to catch that on a dash cam. I'm a big proponent of them. If this doesn't convince you to get both front and rear ones, then I don't know what will, lol.

Glad to see they will be reimbursing you and you're okay.

how much time would you guess law enforcement has to prepare and execute a road closure for a pursuit?

Not trying to start and argument here just clarifying things as I think move over laws are effective at saving lives.

I just read the NH law and to me it doesn’t say move over and stop. It’s says move over and maintain speed. At least that’s how I read it.

Can you share a link that explains it as move and stop?

Cool, but were you cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle? Maybe not considering many departments are short staffed currently, but in normal times...

You’re right my mistake. For some reason I had thought he said he then realized they were gaining on him…”fast”.

I guess just common sense would say if the road were clear and police were closing in fast moving over would be advisable.

And I’d highly doubt that they would deploy spike strips on a vehicle that comes by AFTER the pursuit cars!

It’s all good. No one got hurt.

Move over laws are intended for drivers to move over or, if there is no room to move over, slow down, when passing a stopped emergency vehicle. That is not the same and pulling over to let an emergency vehicle go past you.

In the case posted by the OP, I would expect the LEOs to not accept responsibility for the expenses if the OP had broken any laws.

I didn't mean to start a debate on laws or law enforcement. As I mentioned the officers were super professional and conducted themselves in every way befitting the badge they wear. I didn't cited for anything.

The onramp I got on was not blocked off and the intercept was set up at the very next exit. I had nowhere to go. Just the wrong place at the wrong time.

For the record I was going about 70 mph at the time, maybe a little faster.

Good clarification Geezer. Prevents rubber neckers, the other enables emergency vehicles to more safely get where they are going.

Interesting, I had never interpreted it that way but after looking at the verbiage of the law you are indeed right.

Why would he be cited? He didn’t not yield. Also, they aren’t going to add insult to injury.

This is one of those cases where it is hard to guess, to me the distance between entry ramp and exit ramp would be a determining factor. If I enter the highway in front of a chase and hit the stop sticks in a 1/3 mile, okay, maybe not my fault. However, if Christmas lights are glowing in the mirror and I continue for over a mile and ignore them, then I would consider myself to be at fault for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. I don't know the distance, so I simply inquired to learn more on the subject just in case I ever find myself in a similar situation. It's always good to be prepared for the unexpected and know what to do and how to do it. BTW, hard to disagree with the expulsion, first class job!
