Anybody remember this picture? I found the perfect place to take the Xterra to get it out of my hair. Its a non-profit shop that doubles as a training center for at risk youth. They take vehicle donations, fix them up, and give them to students in need.

Now for the "towing" part. It'll be just me dropping it off, and a cab/uber/lyft for that distance isn't worth the price tag when I have a truck that can just pull the damn thing.

Should I rent a dolly, trailer, or just buy a tow bar? My biggest concern is that I've never actually driven with a trailer, and the shop is in the middle of Atlanta. 20210704_184519.jpg

If you are donating the truck let them come and get it?

What better way to learn to tow in a crowded city. If it were me, I’d get a car trailer from u haul because you can see the sides of the mirrors and practice in a parking lot.

Go slow, throw a student driver sticker on and it will all work out.

We need more people making donations to help others…good on you for this generosity.

I would rent a car hauler, done it many time and uhaul or similar can set you up. That would be the most cost effective and safest way.

The problem with that is my neighborhood isn't big enough for a wrecker to maneuver in, and the wreckers they use for donations have a distance limit. Which would still be a large cab bill if I met them at their max limit.

Just seems the obvious answer to me but of course I know none of the details either.

Your details show you in the same place as the donation place so.....

It will cost you money any other way to make the Donation so only you can decide which is right for you but I would not want to tow for the first time through Atlanta, hell I cant stand just driving through there on the Highway without a trailer and it is never easier with one.

That's a fair point I forgot about my listed location. I made the profile at work, which is in Atlanta. I live in Rome. Total mileage to that shop is 83, total mileage to MY shop is 64. I know and dislike Atlanta traffic all too well and I really only work around the outskirts. (Smyrna border)

If it's drivable, can the receiver of the donated vehicle send 2 people out and have one of them drive it back?

Rome was not built in a day!

And yeah I stay in Cartersville when I go thru there going north in the afternoon and south early in the morning are the only reliable way I have found to maybe not spend a few hours going nowhere in that area and Cartersville is usually about ideal for that and my timing somehow plus I know the area now pretty well too.

Sucks that you have to spend money to make a Donation but it is what it is and a nice gesture either way.

They only have a few people to work with, and working around their open hours and my home hours is the issue. I do have a friend that offered to help out IF he has time, but he's an on call road service repairman. So he's not entirely reliable.

I did joke that I'd just attach the Xterra to his service truck though, so there's an idea.

A dolly will be more difficult to deal with if you are new to towing. I would rent a Uhaul car trailer and take your time. Also, schedule your trip around times when traffic if minimized if you can.

Another point on trailer towing, go to an empty parking lot once you get the trailer so that you can practice a bit. One more tip, when backing up use your mirrors or look out your window. A lot of times when you see someone's trailer doing the snake when backing up it is because they keep looking from their shoulder to their mirrors.
